AION 2 Crafting and Gathering: Professions, Skills and Combo

What to Know About Crafting First

AION 2 has five crafting professions: Blacksmithing, Armorsmithing, Handicrafting, Alchemy and Cooking. Gathering is called Essence Extraction, and there are no separate miner or herbalist professions. Every material comes through one shared progression track.

A recipe usually combines two things: materials collected in the open world and reagents sold by profession vendors. Both crafting and Essence Extraction level up to 100. The first 50 levels make you a Novice, levels 51 to 100 make you a Professional, and a promotion quest at level 50 unlocks the second rank.

According to player reports, you can craft gear for your class, but it is not necessarily faster or easier than earning good items in PvE activities. Upgrade materials and consumables, however, are useful to everyone. Crafting also has an economic side: on the Global market, buying requires a Membership subscription, while free players can still list their own goods for sale.

The Five Professions and What They Make

Each profession levels on its own, so Blacksmithing progress does nothing for Alchemy. There is no single best profession. The right pick depends on what your character needs.

Blacksmithing, Handicrafting and Alchemy cover class-specific weapons and gear, Armorsmithing handles armor, and Cooking produces food with useful effects. Here is how recipes are sorted by category.

Profession

What you can craft

Blacksmithing

Greatswords, longswords, daggers, maces, guard shields and smithing materials

Armorsmithing

Chest armor, leg armor, helms, pauldrons, gloves, boots, cloaks and materials

Handicrafting

Bows, staves, necklaces, earrings, rings, bracelets and materials

Alchemy

Spellbooks, orbs, potions, serums, scrolls, manastones, soulstones and materials

Cooking

Food, plus cooking materials and seasonings

If you play an archer, look at Handicrafting. If you want quick buffs before a boss, Cooking is the one. Since profession levels do not carry over, picking one or two and sticking with them is the sensible route.

Gathering: Gauges and Common Skills

When you start gathering, two gauges appear: success and failure. At regular intervals, one of them fills by a random amount. If the success gauge reaches its target first, you get the material. If the failure gauge gets there first, you leave the node empty-handed. One node survives several attempts, so both hits and misses can come in streaks.

Three common skills affect the outcome and work on every resource.

  • Proficient Handling fills the success gauge more on a good roll.

  • Delicate Touch adds less to the failure gauge on a bad roll.

  • Lady Luck gives a chance to push the success gauge forward sharply.

Each skill goes up to level 10. Every Essence Extraction level grants one common skill point, but higher skill levels cost more: the first five levels cost 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 points, and each level after that costs 5. Maxing a single skill takes 40 points.

A practical path is to raise Proficient Handling and Delicate Touch roughly evenly first, so gathering fails as rarely as possible. Lady Luck is worth adding later, once the foundation is in place.

Specialties by Material Type

According to in-game skill descriptions, beyond the common skills there is one specialty branch for each of six material types: Ore, Gem, Log, Herb, Ingredient and Odyle. Every branch has three skills, unlocked in order.

  1. Seeker shows that resource type on the minimap.

  2. Plentiful Harvest gives a chance of double yield.

  3. Appraiser gives a chance to reroll the material grade upward.

Specialty points are scarce. You get one each at levels 10, 20, 30, 40, 60 and 70, and two each at levels 50, 80, 90 and 100, for 14 in total. A full branch costs 7 points (Seeker 1, Plentiful Harvest 3, Appraiser 3), so you can complete only two of the six.

That makes the specialty tree a real build decision. If you gather ore for Blacksmithing, investing in it is logical, and you can harvest the rest without bonuses.

You can change your mind: the Skill Reset button refunds your gathering points, but it costs 50,000 Kinah. Respeccing is never free, so decide early which material your professions need.

Materials also come in different grades. Ore, gems, logs and Odyle have four tiers, for example Odyle, Fine Odyle, Pure Odyle and Radiant Odyle. Now and then a gather yields a higher grade.

How Crafting Works: Gauges, Odds and Failure

By the guide's description, crafting works like gathering: a success gauge races a failure gauge. If success hits its target first, the item is made. If failure gets there first, the attempt fails. Each recipe has its own level requirement and its own gauge values, so base odds differ from recipe to recipe.

The further your level exceeds the recipe requirement, the higher your maximum success chance. The growth is not linear, and on neighboring levels the figure sometimes stays the same. You can check the exact odds before you start in the Crafting Chance window, on the Expected Probability tab. It accounts for the recipe data, your level difference and active modifiers.

Failure is costly because materials are consumed anyway. Still, profession EXP is awarded for both successful and failed attempts, so the leveling is not wasted.

Do not start a craft in a dangerous area. If you are hit mid-craft, the process is canceled, counts as a failure and the materials are lost.

A high profession level does two things: it unlocks recipes with higher requirements and improves your odds on every recipe below your level. Leveling stays useful even after the recipe you want is already available.

Stations, Vendors and Materials

You cannot craft from the regular menu. You need a crafting station in a major city or town of your faction. Elyos find them in Verteron, at Dawn Legion Base and Zumion Village. Asmodians find them in Altgard, at Safe Haven and Nornir Assembly.

Vendors stand near the stations and sell supplementary materials: solvents, oils, powders, seasonings and other profession reagents. Each of the five professions has its own shop, plus a separate Substance Morph shop that serves Substance Morph rather than regular crafting.

A simple starter example is the Orichalcum Ingot. It takes two Orichalcum Ore and one Orichalcum Solvent, bought at the Blacksmithing Shop. Intermediates like this feed into more advanced recipes: first refining, then finished gear or consumables.

Advanced recipes can also call for upgraded resource grades, monster drops and materials from PvE activities. Before you start, you can set the quantity or press MAX to craft as many items as your supplies allow.

Combo and Splendent: Gear Quality Chains

Some recipes have an extra mechanic called COMBO. It can only trigger after a normal craft succeeds: the game checks a separate Combo chance, and on a hit you receive an improved result. In the probability window you can switch between the basic chance and the Combo chance.

For equipment, Combo matters a lot. The improved versions, called Splendent, are often a higher grade than the regular result, and in some chains they are needed as an ingredient for the next recipe. Splendent is not a grade of its own, it is the outcome of a successful Combo.

In Global, gear currently tops out at the Unique grade, and Season 1 has no Heroic items. A sample weapon chain on Orichalcum looks like this.

  • Orichalcum weapon: Common.

  • Splendent version: Rare, same as the Expert version.

  • Expert Splendent and Artisan: Epic.

  • Artisan Splendent and Dragon Lord: Unique.

The takeaway: if you are working toward high-grade gear, do not skip the Combo versions. They are not cosmetic, they are a step toward the next recipe.

Leveling Professions Sensibly

Every craft attempt grants profession EXP, so the best way to level is to make intermediates and items you can actually use. Gathering EXP comes from any node: ore, gems, logs, herbs, ingredients and Odyle all feed one shared level.

A few starting points.

  • Pick a profession that fits your character: weapons, armor or consumables.

  • Gather the material type that profession needs and put specialty points into it.

  • Craft in safe spots next to a station.

  • Remember the promotion quest at level 50, or you will stall there.

Keep expectations realistic. If you need gear quickly, PvE activities often hand it over more easily. If you care about upgrade materials, consumables or selling on the market, crafting pays off.
