Apex Legends beginner guide: first matches, Legends and combat basics

Apex Legends is easier to learn when practice has a clear order: controls and weapons first, fighting together next, then decisions around the map. Winning depends on combining those skills rather than selecting one supposedly unbeatable character.

This guide mainly covers Core: Unranked matches and competitive Ranked. Wildcard handles loot, healing and returning to the fight differently, so habits learned there need a deliberate adjustment before you use them in Core.

Start with a comfortable Legend, a familiar weapon pair and one objective per match. That might mean keeping up with the squad or reaching cover after every exchange. The sections below cover account progression, classes, equipment, combat and a practical order for early training.

Before your first match

Complete Training, then enter the Firing Range. Locate crouch, sprint, jump, ping, healing, weapon switching and every ability. Check that you can move while using them without looking away to find a key. Change an awkward binding now if you cannot.

A new account starts with Bangalore, Lifeline and Wraith. The Welcome Pass unlocks Bloodhound, Gibraltar and Pathfinder; completing it awards 12,000 Legend Tokens for another Legend of your choice. This is beginner progression rather than a regular seasonal Battle Pass purchase. An additional Legend normally costs 12,000 Legend Tokens or 750 Apex Coins to unlock. Buying a Legend is unnecessary to begin learning.

Try Unranked for your first matches. Bot Royale Evolved offers matches with humans and bots, but do not assume every opponent is a bot. Wildcard provides frequent fights, while Mixtape offers rotating modes. Their pace and rules do not replace learning Core's full inventory system.

Choosing a Legend and understanding classes

A character has passive, tactical and ultimate abilities. Read their descriptions and decide what problem each will solve: surviving a crossing, denying an angle or helping an ally. An ability saved until the end of a lost fight provided no benefit.

Class

Squad role

A beginner's practice goal

Assault

Offensive pressure

Shoot alongside an ally instead of rushing ahead alone

Controller

Space control

Hold an entrance and choose a position early

Recon

Information gathering

Tell the squad where enemies are and act on that information

Skirmisher

Mobility and angle changes

Plan a safe exit before entering a fight

Support

Helping the squad recover

Assist from a position that can be defended

Class perks apply in Core. For example, Controllers use Ring Consoles to reveal the next Ring, while Recon Legends use Survey Beacons to locate opponents. These are different devices providing different information: knowing the next zone does not reveal every enemy.

Among the starting characters, try Bangalore to practise choosing when to reposition. Put smoke between the threat and your route rather than automatically covering a teammate who is already shooting. Lifeline suits learning squad support: assess firing lines before helping an ally recover. Choose Wraith if you are willing to communicate your movements; your own escape does not mean the entire squad got out. Keep a backup choice and avoid changing characters after every defeat.

Landing and the opening seconds

Watch the landing location indicator and the rules of your selected playlist. Do not fly to another district without agreeing on it. Land in neighbouring rooms or at separate containers so that you do not compete for the same item, while remaining close enough to help each other.

Your first priority is a usable weapon and the ability to fire it. Do not run past a serviceable gun searching for your favourite when an enemy is already nearby. Recovery items and useful upgrades come next. Once a teammate starts fighting, another loot bin is usually less valuable than firing together.

Ping weapons, travel directions and opponents. A message should enable action: an enemy behind the right-hand door is more useful than constant signals. If the squad retreats, acknowledge the route and move with them instead of silently continuing a duel.

Health, shields and bringing teammates back

Health and shields use different consumables: Syringes and Med Kits restore health; Shield Cells and Shield Batteries recharge shields. Check which resource is missing before using one. Heal behind solid cover; starting an animation does not make an exposed position safe.

In Ranked, armor improves through EVO. Sources include damage, EVO Caches and EVO Harvesters. Interface values and tooltips matter more than a random item's color: a higher-level item is not automatically better for every task. Check compatibility and effects first.

A knocked player can still be revived; an eliminated player needs to return to the match. A Knockdown Shield helps protect a downed player but does not make them invulnerable. Before reviving, check whether an enemy can flank the cover and ask a living teammate to watch the approach.

All Legends can craft banners in Ranked, not just Support characters. Once a banner is obtained, respawn options become available; the official rules also allow teammates to return through their death box. Do not apply a Freestyle automatic return timer to every mode. Follow the available prompt and avoid sacrificing the last living squad member at a position the enemy can freely shoot.

Weapons for early matches

A normal weapon pair should cover different ranges. Begin by trying the R-301 and Volt in the Firing Range, then compare them with alternatives found during matches. Judge them by hits while moving and comfortable reloads rather than someone else's list of top guns.

Type

Starting comparison

Practice task

Assault rifle

R-301

Keep tracking a target while firing at mid-range

SMG

Volt

Follow a nearby moving target

LMG

Spitfire

Stop firing and return to cover in time

Marksman

30-30 Repeater

Wait until your aim is ready before shooting

Sniper rifle

Longbow

Find a safe angle and change it after being spotted

Shotgun

EVA-8 or Peacekeeper

Peek for a shot and immediately return to cover

Pistol

P2020 or Wingman

Assess the accuracy of individual hits

These are category exercises, not a promise that every gun spawns on the ground in every playlist. Loot pools change. If a weapon is absent from your mode, practise the same task with an available equivalent. Avoid carrying two long-range guns until you know how you will defend yourself in a doorway.

In Marked, energy weapons use their own regenerating ammunition stockpile. The old advice to keep filling a backpack with green ammo for a Volt no longer applies. Check the interface for the ammunition required by other weapons. Do not identify it from an outdated weapon description.

Attachments must be compatible with the gun. In Core, a built-in hop-up's effect must first be unlocked; Freestyle equips weapons differently. A Corrupted Attachment offers a benefit with a drawback, and only one can be fitted to a gun at a time. Read both sides of its effect before replacing a familiar attachment.

Surviving fights

Fight near cover that lets you hide after firing a burst. Position yourself so that another teammate can shoot the same target. If several enemy angles can see you at once, reposition: winning every duel simultaneously is much harder.

After dealing useful damage, ask whether the squad can support a push. A wounded opponent behind a door may already be healing while two allies protect them. Without support, hold the angle instead of turning a good exchange into a solo charge.

A grenade can force an enemy out of cover or delay pursuit. Call the side you are attacking before throwing it, and keep a retreat route. Choose finishers situationally as well: the animation does not justify exposing yourself to another opponent's fire.

A suitable Shield Core from a defeated player's death box can restore shields quickly instead of waiting for a consumable. Compare its charge and level using the tooltip; do not stand in a menu while exposed. Fast looting is useful when you survive it and remain with the squad.

Movement, the Ring and a learning plan

Holster your weapon for a fast, safe rotation and slide on downhill terrain. Practise climbing obstacles while holding jump separately. When crossing open ground, choose the next piece of cover in advance instead of zigzagging without a destination.

Check the Ring before committing to a long fight. Start rotating with time to spare, especially if the route involves a climb or a narrow passage. High ground is useful when you can shoot, heal and retreat from it; a roof with no escape under pressure from several squads can become a trap.

Split your early practice into sessions: shooting and weapon swaps first, moving together next, then fighting from cover. After a match, choose one fixable mistake: a late retreat, losing a teammate or reloading in the open. Return to the range, rehearse the relevant action and test it in the next match. That gives you a concrete objective even while wins are still rare.
