Apex Legends Gibraltar guide: dome, abilities and squad play
Gibraltar helps his squad when protection becomes a concrete action: reviving an ally, moving between cover or taking a controlled close-range fight. A dome does not win an exchange by itself. Decide in advance what the squad will accomplish inside and where it will go when protection ends.
This guide covers Gun Shield, Momentum Boost, Dome of Protection, Defensive Bombardment and upgrade choices in Core. It accounts for the Aftershock rework and Marked Midseason fixes. This is a practical role guide rather than a promise of a universal top-tier ranking.
Gibraltar's strength is creating brief opportunities to recover and attack together. His weakness is relying on positioning and coordination. If teammates have already scattered across separate buildings, one dome cannot repair that problem.
Squad role and defensive limits
Gibraltar belongs to Support. His job involves more than waiting for a teammate to be knocked: occupy a position from which you can cover a fight and help the squad change plans quickly. Before contact, call where the dome will go and which side the squad intends to hold.
Support Legends revive teammates faster. Prepare the dome and cover around that advantage: one player performs the revive while another watches the entrance and flank. Move to the next cover together after the revive while the teammate is still recovering combat readiness.
A large silhouette demands disciplined angle selection. Do not compensate for an awkward position by trusting passive protection. Reducing the number of exposed directions and keeping a retreat behind solid cover is better than trading damage in the middle of a street.
Do not confuse Gun Shield with Fortified. Battle Charge (2019) increased Fortified damage reduction from 10% to 15% and introduced protection against slowing from weapon hits. Saviors (2022) excluded headshots from its damage reduction. These are historical changes rather than a verified current coefficient. Protection against slowing from weapon hits cannot be extended to every slowing effect.
Check three conditions: allies can use your protection, opponents lack a free flank, and another action remains possible after the ability. When none applies, moving closer to the squad or changing your angle may matter more than immediately throwing a dome.
Gun Shield: a frontal trading advantage
Gun Shield deploys while aiming down sights and blocks incoming fire from the front. It supplements a damage exchange rather than replacing normal shields or cover. It does not protect every direction, so turning toward one enemy does not solve the threat of another at your side.

The showcase frame shows Gun Shield’s frontal plate. It illustrates the appearance rather than the shield’s current health.
Gun Shield has limited health and recharges. System Override (2020) reduced its health from 75 to 50; Shockwave (2024) separately stated that Gun Shield Generator increased Gibraltar's shield health to 75 while preserving his passive ability's recharge time. Those values describe the named updates. For another peek, judge whether your protection is actually ready rather than relying on an old timer from someone else's build.
Check manual shield control in the Firing Range: while aiming down sights, find the Arm Shield prompt and use your assigned key. After pressing it, check the shield state before your next peek. The bright frontal plate is visible in the ability showcase; do not assume that prolonged observation through your sights is discreet.
Practise a short peek: aim at the expected angle, expose only the necessary part of your position, fire a shot or burst and hide. After your protection takes damage, avoid automatically repeating the same rhythm. An opponent may already be waiting for the next peek.
Do not turn ADS into constant stationary observation. Before repositioning, check the side approach and your distance from teammates. Crouching and cover height change the visible part of your model but do not guarantee that opponents cannot hit an exposed area.
Momentum Boost: prepare rotations early
Momentum Boost grants speed after maintaining maximum sprint speed for two seconds. Under Aftershock's rules it activates while unarmed or using a weapon without a sprint-speed restriction, such as with Fast Shotties. It helps with a route you have already chosen rather than an improvised rush into an unknown courtyard.
Gibraltar can also break a door with one hit. After the Aftershock rework, his melee attacks deal double damage to Hardlight. Use these options to prepare a coordinated entry: before destroying a barrier, check who can shoot through the opening it creates.
Before moving, holster your weapon, inspect the next cover and call the direction. Avoid starting a long acceleration directly in front of an opponent when it gives them a clear firing line. Reaching a usable position matters more than simply moving faster.
Marked Midseason fixed the interaction between Agile Standard Stock and Fast Shotties: that Corrupted Attachment's movement-speed increase no longer stacks with Gibraltar's upgrade. Do not plan a route or loadout around an old clip showing unintended acceleration.
Dome of Protection: assign the dome a job

The icon identifies the ability; it does not show the dome’s exact size or placement in a match.
Dome of Protection blocks both incoming and outgoing attacks across its boundary. To shoot an outside target, work around the edge of protection rather than expecting to fire through it. Aftershock reduced its base cooldown from 17 to 13 seconds. This changes how often the ability is available rather than allowing you to ignore enemy positions.
The dome does not keep opponents outside. An enemy can enter and fight beside you. After throwing it, identify which entrance direction you control with your weapon, and avoid treating a blocked distant firing line as complete safety.
Objective | Preparation | Finishing the action |
|---|---|---|
Revive an ally | Cover the approach and assign a lookout | Move together toward the next cover |
Restore shields | First break the direct firing line | Check the entrance before resuming contact |
Cross exposed ground | Choose the placement and destination cover | Keep moving instead of parking the whole squad |
Take a close fight | Agree who watches each side | Deal damage together and retain a retreat |
Place the dome with terrain and the actual surrounding space in mind. After deployment, check for an unprotected angle or easy flank. Temporary protection in a poor position should help you leave it rather than persuade the squad to stay.
Avoid planning around the assumption that abilities cannot remove the dome. In Takeover (2025), the developers restored its destruction by Crypto’s EMP and Maggie’s Wrecking Ball. Keep ordinary cover and a retreat available after deployment: losing the dome should not strand the entire squad in the open.
In close combat, practise crossing the edge, shooting and returning. Avoid repeating the same peek timing because an enemy can adapt. An ally firing from another angle helps more than three players obstructing each other along one edge.
Upgrades: choose for the next fight
After Aftershock, the level-two choices Thunder Dome and Healing Dome solve different problems. Thunder Dome deals 50 damage and slows the first enemy entering. It helps against an initial push rather than functioning as an unlimited trap for every later opponent.
Healing Dome extends the dome's duration by 4 seconds and doubles small-med healing for any player inside. That condition includes enemies. Before committing to a lengthy recovery, make sure the squad actually controls the interior.
At level three, Triple Bombardment splits the ultimate into 3 charges with a smaller radius and fewer missiles per charge. Choose it when you need separate effects on different approaches rather than assuming three uses automatically beat one larger strike.
Fast Shotties increases movement speed with shotguns and automatically reloads shotguns on knocks. This helps sustain close combat after downing an opponent: agree beforehand who will cover your target switch, and do not count on the reload before securing a knock. Read the actual description of your selected upgrade and distinguish it from the removed Big Bruddah, Bubble Bunker and Baby Bubble. Those were removed during the Aftershock rework; older recommendations to select them do not describe this upgrade set.
Defensive Bombardment: deny the right space
The ultimate calls a mortar strike onto the marked area. Aftershock incorporated the 20% radius increase into the base kit, accelerated missile arrival and allowed throwing the marker before the equip animation finishes. Its practical value depends on whether the squad uses the pressure window.
Choose an objective before throwing: displace an exposed enemy, delay pursuit or block an approach while an ally recovers. Warn the squad where the strike will land. Do not expect one marker to solve an enemy holding beneath reliable overhead protection.
Dome plus bombardment works as a sequence: block a distant firing line, create an outside threat and complete the agreed action inside. If an enemy has already entered, close-range fighting and mutual support are required rather than waiting for an outside strike to stop them automatically.
Warn teammates about the strike zone in advance and leave an advancing route outside the explosions. In the Wild Frontier notes dated March 19, 2019, Respawn fixed a bug that prevented squadmates from being affected by Defensive Bombardment’s Shell Shock. This historical example shows why artillery support needs team coordination: a marker on your intended entrance can obstruct the follow-up attack.
Teammates and divided responsibilities
With Bangalore, split control tasks: smoke blocks observation of a crossing while Gibraltar prepares a dome where the squad needs to stop. Avoid spending both tools without a plan if one is enough for a short movement.
Caustic suits a composition that intends to hold a limited area and control entrances. Agree on the position first, then use abilities while preserving vision and a retreat. This is an editorial team-play idea rather than a mandatory best composition.
Valkyrie offers squad movement through Skyward Dive. Discuss the gathering point early: the ability cannot help someone who remained in another building and failed to join in time. At the landing point, Gibraltar again needs a plan for cover and the next contact.
Practice and common mistakes
Begin in the Firing Range: learn the dome edge, the transition between ADS and movement, and entering close contact. In matches, choose one objective: every dome should have a stated purpose beforehand. Afterwards, ask whether teammates completed it.
Do not judge success solely by ultimate damage. A saved ally, successful crossing and retained resources can also improve the squad's position. However, a dome that merely lets the team wait for the next encirclement should not be called a rescue.
The main mistakes recur: deploying protection late, treating it as an impassable wall, healing without watching the entrance and leaving the squad behind to use a speed boost. Address one each session and retain a clear order: position, ability objective, shared action and the next route.
