This guide covers the release date, location, loot tables, Tier 4 tokens, and practical strategies for High King Maulgar and Gruul the Dragonkiller.

  • Launches on February 5, 2026 with the start of TBC Anniversary Phase 1.

  • No attunement required.

  • Minimum entry level is 65, but 70 is strongly recommended.

  • Drops Tier 4 shoulder (Maulgar) and Tier 4 leg (Gruul) tokens.

  • Only two boss encounters, making it a fast weekly clear with high-value rewards.

Gruul’s Lair release date

Gruul’s Lair opens on February 5, 2026 as part of TBC Anniversary Phase 1. Like Karazhan and Magtheridon’s Lair, it is not available during the pre-patch.

Why Gruul’s Lair matters in Phase 1

Gruul’s Lair is a “short raid with long-term value.” It provides:

  • Tier 4 tokens (shoulders and legs) to complete early set bonuses

  • highly contested trinkets, weapons, rings, and cloaks that remain competitive beyond Phase 1—especially for tanks and physical DPS

Strategy: High King Maulgar

Maulgar is fought with four council members. The main wipe point is the pull, so clean assignments and immediate control matter most.

Standard kill order:
Priest → Warlock → Mage → Shaman → Maulgar

Core execution notes:

  • The pull decides the fight—use Misdirection, marks, and tank positioning to secure every add fast.

  • Ranged DPS are valuable since several council abilities punish melee.

  • Maulgar hits extremely hard (Arcing Smash / Mighty Blow / Whirlwind).

    • melee step out for Whirlwind

    • keep Demoralizing Shout and Thunder Clap up to reduce incoming damage

  • At 50% HP he becomes more chaotic: Flurry, Berserker Charge, Intimidating Roar.

    • having two tanks on Maulgar after the council dies helps stabilize charges and fear recovery

    • Maulgar is tauntable, so swaps are reliable

Strategy: Gruul the Dragonkiller

Gruul is a DPS-and-mechanics check. Growth stacks every ~30 seconds and eventually makes the fight unhealable (roughly ~8 minutes), so clean execution and strong damage are critical.

Tanks & Hurtful Strike

You need two tanks in melee range at all times:

  • MT holds boss aggro

  • OT stays second on threat and soaks Hurtful Strike (hits the second-highest threat target in melee)

If no valid target is in range, Hurtful Strike can kill melee DPS or create lethal spikes on the MT.

Raid positioning

  • Spread loosely to reduce pressure from Cave In (ground zone that ramps later). Move out quickly.

  • Reverberation silences the raid—healers should recover immediately after it ends.

Ground Slam → Gronn Lord’s Grasp → Shatter

This is the most lethal sequence:

  • after Ground Slam, you’re slowed by Grasp

  • then Shatter deals damage based on how close players are to each other

Rule: create distance immediately. Spacing is the solution—stacking kills.

📌 Once engaged, the gate closes—make sure everyone is inside and positioned before the pull.
