Which Call of Duty Games Are Still Playable
What You Can Launch Right Now
Almost the entire main Call of Duty line, from Call of Duty 2 to Black Ops 7, reportedly still has working online servers. A working server and a lively matchmaking pool are different things, though: some games fill a lobby in a couple of minutes, others make you wait for the evening or the weekend.
Only one game is fully current: Black Ops 7. Season 6 has been live since September 17, 2026, and Modern Warfare 4 arrives on October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Switch 2. The population numbers below were taken in August 2026, before Season 6 and before launch week of the new game, so treat them as rough guidance rather than fresh stats.
The general rule is simple: older entries are usually livelier on consoles than on PC, and popular modes like Team Deathmatch and Zombies fill faster than other playlists.
How to Judge the Population of an Older Game
The main source of PC numbers is SteamDB, but it has blind spots. Some games launched on Battle.net, and Steam does not see console players at all. A low Steam number does not mean nobody is playing.

What affects how quickly you find a match:
Time of day. For the oldest entries the peak is in the evening UTC, around 6-7 PM.
Platform. The classic Modern Warfare games are noticeably livelier on consoles than on PC.
Mode. Team Deathmatch and Zombies fill more often than niche playlists.
Friends. If you gather a squad in advance, the wait hardly matters.
For very old PC games, Discord communities and community servers help. Call of Duty 4 has the CoD4x mod, which is PC only.
The Classics, 2005-2011
These games suit anyone who wants to see where it all started and does not mind waiting for a lobby.
Call of Duty 2. Servers run on PC and Xbox, with roughly 300-400 players on SteamDB in August and an evening peak. Random matchmaking is slow, so player communities are the easier route.
Call of Duty 3. There is no PC version, so the population is hard to measure. You can play on PS3, Xbox 360 and via backward compatibility, but expect a long wait.
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Perks and weapon attachments debuted here. About 200-300 players on PC, with a livelier community on consoles.
World at War. The home of the first Zombies map, Nacht der Untoten. Around 300-400 players on PC, mostly in Team Deathmatch and Zombies.
Modern Warfare 2 (2009). One of the most beloved entries. 300-400 players on PC in the evenings, but the main audience is on consoles, where lobbies fill quickly.
Black Ops. By player reports the liveliest of the old games: around 500-800 on PC and fast searches on consoles.
Modern Warfare 3 (2011). About 300 players on PC, and full lobbies are easy to find on consoles.
If you pick one game from this block, take Black Ops or Modern Warfare 2 on a console.
The 2012-2016 Era
These entries differ the most in popularity, so choose them by mode rather than by name.

Black Ops 2. Released in 2012, it arrived on PlayStation in July 2026, and player reports describe a big surge of people. PC numbers are modest, around 100-200, so a console is the better choice.
Ghosts. A game with a mixed reception. Under 100 players on PC; on consoles lobbies mostly appear on weekend evenings.
Advanced Warfare. Exo suits and jump packs freshened up the formula, but the population is small: about 50 players on PC and occasional lobbies on consoles.
Black Ops 3. One of the most visible games on PC, with around 10,000 players at peak. The community prizes it for Zombies, while multiplayer can have matchmaking trouble. If a lobby will not fill, try turning off map packs.
Infinite Warfare. A sci-fi campaign and familiar multiplayer. 200-300 players on PC; on consoles, weekends work best.
2017-2021: A Series Searching for Direction
In this period the series tried different ideas, and playability depends heavily on the specific entry.
WWII. Reception was mixed, partly because of its loot box system. The population is small: 200-300 on PC and somewhat more on consoles at weekends.
Black Ops 4. No single-player campaign, but it introduced Blackout, the first battle royale in the series. On PC it is Battle.net only, so Steam has no numbers, and consoles can still find games.
Modern Warfare (2019). Where Warzone began. Steam showed 1,500-4,000 players in August, plus many more on Battle.net. If you care about big Warzone feats, take a look at the Nuke in Warzone.
Black Ops Cold War. Around 400-500 players on Steam, with lobbies on both PC and consoles.
Vanguard. The quietest option here: roughly 50-100 players on PC, and lobbies are easier on consoles.
Modern Entries and What Comes Next
Finding a match is rarely a problem here, so choose by taste.

Modern Warfare II (2022). Launched on Battle.net and Steam at the same time. Around 8,000 players on Steam and plenty on consoles.
Modern Warfare III (2023). Follows MWII and brought back the classic Modern Warfare 2 (2009) maps. About 2,000-3,000 players on Steam. For the story, run the Modern Warfare 3 Campaign.
Black Ops 6. Around 2,000 on Steam, and it added omnidirectional movement. It was in the Game Pass catalog in August, but the catalog changes, so check current availability.
Black Ops 7. The sequel to Black Ops 2, set in 2035. Reception is mixed, but it remains the current game with seasonal updates. For the story there is the Black Ops 7 Campaign, and for account growth, Leveling, Weapon Leveling and Prestige.
Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23, and its campaign has been in early access for digital preorders since October 16. Whether Black Ops 7 keeps receiving updates after the new game arrives is not yet known.

How to Pick the Right Game
If you want nostalgia and can handle a long search, take Call of Duty 4 or Modern Warfare 2 on a console and gather friends. For Zombies with a living community, Black Ops 3 on PC is the best fit, and World at War shows where the mode began.
If you want quick games without waiting, go for Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III or Black Ops 6. For the most current experience there is Black Ops 7, and Modern Warfare 4 joins in a few days.
Finally, check your platform first: Call of Duty 3 and Black Ops 4 are set up differently on PC than the rest, and some games may not be available on your device.
