What the Map Is and Where to Start

Kowakujo is a round-based Zombies map in Black Ops 7: a feudal Japanese castle surrounded by volcanoes in the Dark Aether. It launched on June 25, 2026 with Season 04 Reloaded, and the Main Quest Easter egg was available from day one. The story picks up after Totenreich: the crew must free the last Shadowsmith, recover the World Seed and survive Nyxara's undead army. The castle echoes Takeo Masaki's home, twisted by the Dark Aether.

The quest is long, and most of it is detective work rather than shooting. The whole route fits into 12 steps: Pack-a-Punch, Wonder Weapon, lanterns, Fox Mask, five categories of evidence, witness testimony, solving the mystery, and a finale against the Onryo and Nyxara. Below they are grouped into six blocks by room and goal, so you are not running around the castle without a plan. In a squad, agree early who drives the quest and who holds the line: many steps need one player working calmly while the others clear the wave.

If Zombies is not your thing but the Black Ops 7 story is, there is a campaign completion service.

Pack-a-Punch: The Unlock Chain

The first objective is "Acquire the World Seed". You start in the Outer Ward and need to recapture two Wards. One sits past the Staging Area, Stables and Training Area, the other in the Kitchens. Order does not matter: interact with a Ward and stay inside the marked circle until the bar fills.

After that the sequence is:

  • remove the Gate Glyphs at the gate with two red dragon heads in the Central Courtyard;

  • kill the Oni that forms from a giant lightning shard in the War Room and pick up Shogun's Hanko;

  • place the Hanko into the golden dragon door and climb to Shogun's Sanctum;

  • kill the zombies with a purple glow near the World Seed.

Then the World Seed reveals the Pack-a-Punch machine. The quest marker leads you to every point, so getting lost here is unlikely.

Nekomancer: Building the Wonder Weapon

The map's Wonder Weapon is the Nekomancer, a cat with three abilities: Spirit Bolt, Hairball and Neko Punch. Getting it is split into several hunts and takes at least a couple of rounds.

The order of work:

  1. Knock down the cat cage at the Tenshu Entrance. Players report that the PhD Flopper blast from a dive under the cage does the job.

  2. Throw the cage into lava: it melts and the cat swims away.

  3. Find three parts: the Furin Bell (its ringing gives it away), the Maneki-Neko Statue and the Karakuri Doll.

  4. Craft the Maneki-Neko at the Workshop table. It is tactical equipment, so do not waste it.

  5. Find the glowing paw prints: they appear in the blood of killed zombies at one of several starting spots, and the spot changes from match to match. Follow the direction of the prints until they form a shape.

  6. Throw the Maneki-Neko into the center of the shape. A cat rises from the lava and an Abomination immediately swallows it.

  7. Kill the Abomination by hitting its open mouths, then sneak up on the cat and carry it to the World Seed.

At the World Seed the cat jumps on it and shockwaves begin. Melee the Seed between waves until the cat breaks free, then pick up the Nekomancer. Sneak up in a crouch with Death Perception on, since it highlights the creaky boards: sprinting, shooting and loud floorboards scare the cat off and you have to look again next round.

Lanterns and the Fox Mask

With the Nekomancer in hand, light 11 Stone Lanterns across the map. Each one is shot with the Wonder Weapon, a short timer starts after the first, and too many misses reset progress. Order does not matter, so plan a route in advance, keep Max Ammo nearby and do not get pulled into the wave: if you get distracted you burn the attempt for nothing.

Then head to the War Room, where a spirit with a katana appears and interacting with it starts a cutscene. From the roof, take the Ninja Kite and grab the Fox Mask by the roof edge on the way to the cherry blossom tree. If you miss, fly again. The mask goes to the mask wall in the Storage Rooms.

There you face a "Simon Says" puzzle: three, then four, then five masks light up, and you kill zombies wearing the same masks in the same order. A mistake fails the attempt until the next round, so do it at the end of a round with one zombie alive and no explosives.

Evidence and the Meditation Room Mystery

From here the quest turns into a detective story. You collect evidence by category and place it on the shelves of the Meditation Room, where each category reveals one of five paintings. The categories break down like this:

Category

What to do

Suspect Evidence

Shoot the Fox Mask hiding in three places and collect the dropped items

Accomplice Evidence

Complete three tasks with the Gardener, Merchant and Nobleman after the Coin Purse step

Poison Evidence

Gather three poison items; part of the chain opens only after the second painting

Location Evidence

Defend the repaired cup in three spots and earn the items for the fourth painting

Motive Evidence

Solve the clock and flag puzzle and take the Crest Medallion

The hardest part is the final "murder board". One item goes under each painting, and for the poison answer you compare the Doctor's Note with the Poison Compendium. Some answers change from run to run, so in most cases check the note instead of placing items at random. One more accomplice hint comes from a ghost soldier after 15-20 kills during a single Oni or archer trap activation.

A wrong answer spawns an elite enemy and you can retry only next round. If the answer is right, an orange orb flies to the World Seed.

The Finale: Onryo and Nyxara

After the board you purify the sword at the World Seed and survive a stronger Oni fight in the courtyard. Then the path to the final arena opens, and there is no way back from it, so stock up on Max Ammo, armor and equipment first. Players recommend upgrading the Neko grenades beforehand: the upgraded version creates a protective bubble.

The final boss is Nyxara, a dragon, and the Onryo must be expelled before it. Across three phases the arena revolves around flags carried by Oni and capture zones. Players describe the pattern this way: each phase asks for more flags and zones, and a blue safe zone gives a damage window on the dragon's weak spots. Keep moving, stay off the lava and save your best equipment for the last phase.

Quest rewards are the Purified Takeo Operator Skin, a Calling Card and 10,000 XP. A unique Calling Card variant was available to those who finished before Directed Mode arrived. That mode came to Kowakujo on July 23, 2026 with Season 5, so only the standard set is available now.

Cursed Mode and New Map Content

Cursed Mode strips out quest guidance, reduces the HUD almost to nothing and gives you only a starting pistol. Players report new Pack-a-Punch camos, Calling Cards and XP tied to it. Go in after you know the map and the quest steps. Zombies camos can also be earned other ways: for example, we offer services for the Forged Camo and the Priceless Camo.

New items arrived with the map as well. Hellping Hound is a Legendary GobbleGum that summons a friendly Hellhound for five minutes. The PPSh-41 is an ultra-rare legacy SMG from the Mystery Box with full Pack-a-Punch and Ammo Mod support. For that gun, weapon leveling is handy, and for overall rank progress there is leveling.

If you want to go back to multiplayer after the quest, Prestige is a separate goal waiting there.
