Morgeth Surpassing in Pantheon 2.0: Mechanics and Tactics
What Changes in the Morgeth Fight
Morgeth Surpassing in Pantheon 2.0 merges two raid encounters: the Last Wish boss and the Riven's Heart segment. The familiar Taken Strength collecting stays, but every trap now sends two players into a separate space with a puzzle, and the team clears it three times before the damage phase.
The key rule applies from the first second: nobody can hold more than two Taken Strength stacks. A third one kills the holder, and everything they carried drops on the floor. All the other tactics are built around this limit.
Pantheon 2.0 arrived with Update 9.7.0 (Monument of Triumph) on June 9, 2026, which Bungie called the last big update for the game. At launch, Morgeth and The Pantheon: Calus Resplendent were available, a third gauntlet unlocked on June 13, and weekly boss rotations began on June 16. Hotfix 9.7.0.1 on June 16 restored missing objective directions in Pantheon. This guide is current as of 10/17/2026.
Arena Layout and Team Roles
Morgeth stands at the back of the arena by the staircase, and Taken Strength spawns around the room. The first orb sits right in front of the boss, and picking it up starts the fight. After that, adds arrive, new orbs appear, and the team settles into its rotation.

Six players split into two teams of three, left and right. You do not need a role for every person, but everyone should know their job.
Role | Job |
|---|---|
Left team | Collects Taken Strength, kills adds, helps with Eye of Riven when needed |
Right team | Does the same on the other side of the arena |
Taken Essence holder | Frees the trapped player and enters Riven's Heart with them |
Outside callers | Read the symbols on the wall behind Morgeth and call the forbidden ones |
Final stand players | Grab Taken Strength without going past two stacks |
Roles rotate from trap to trap: whoever stood outside last time may be inside next time. Agree early on who calls symbols out loud and who stays quiet and listens.
Taken Strength and Stack Control
You pick up a Strength by running through the floating Taken orb. The cap is two stacks per player, and a third kills instantly. Every extra step toward an orb at that moment costs a life.
It helps when the player who starts the fight grabs a second orb right away: everyone then knows who the trap will catch and who needs freeing.
Take orbs as soon as they appear. Morgeth's strength meter climbs throughout the fight, and at 100% the whole team dies. A player who already holds two stacks stays away from new orbs and says so in voice chat: saying "I'm at two" costs less than restarting the whole attempt.
The Trap and Taken Essence
When Morgeth raises his hand, he traps a player holding two stacks. The trapped player cannot move, and the trap timer (Umbral Enervation) kills everyone inside if nobody stops it.

Freeing a player takes a few steps:
Kill an Eye of Riven and pick up the Taken Essence it drops.
Run to the trapped player and press the grenade button.
The liberator receives the trapped player's Taken Strength, and both players teleport into Riven's Heart.
It is best to go with the Essence carrying no stacks of your own: the liberator receives the trapped player's Taken Strength, and existing stacks make it easy to hit the cap. The rest of the team keeps the arena under control and handles the adds.
Symbols in Riven's Heart
Inside, Taken Strength orbs appear with Last Wish symbols. Outside, the wall behind Morgeth displays symbols that must not be picked up. The first pair gets two of them, and after the second pair the wall shows four. The outside team calls them out, and the pair inside looks for orbs with other marks and takes only the safe ones. A player who grabs a called symbol inside dies.
There is no universal vocabulary for the symbols, so use whatever descriptions your group understands. Short, vivid names like "snake," "circle," or "fish" keep the marks from getting mixed up in a hurry. Agree on them before the attempt starts.
The order of the fight up to the damage phase looks like this:
Pick up the first Taken Strength and start the encounter.
The starter takes a second orb and gets trapped.
Kill an Eye of Riven and free the trapped player with the Essence.
The pair clears the puzzle using the outside team's callouts.
Repeat for the second and third pairs.
Once all six are inside, grab the last Taken Strength next to Morgeth.
Most of the difficulty here is repetition: every pair does the same thing, while the forbidden symbols multiply.
The Damage Phase
When the last pair enters Riven's Heart, Morgeth appears there too. A final Taken Strength spawns near him, and the player who does not yet hold two stacks takes it. That starts the damage phase.

The team groups up and shoots the glowing weak spots. Morgeth's strength meter keeps rising, and 100% still wipes everyone. So one pre-assigned player kills an Eye of Riven, grabs the Taken Essence, and uses a Super on Morgeth. That resets his strength and ends the damage phase.
Fire the Super from about 80% on the meter and never later than 100%. Greed for a few extra shots quickly turns an almost won attempt into a failure. If the boss still has plenty of health, the whole cycle repeats, because one phase is not always enough.
Assign not only the Super player but also a backup in case that player dies, and do not spend heavy ammo on easy targets.
The Final Stand
When Morgeth reaches his last health segment, everyone is teleported away and a portal opens. It leads to a long jumping section in the Ascendant Realm in the style of Queen's Walk, which you have to cross to get back to the boss.
At the end, Taken Strengths spawn around Morgeth, and each player grabs two. The two-stack rule still applies, so decide ahead of time who takes which orbs and do not grab extras. Once every orb is taken, damage becomes possible again.
Save heavy ammo and burst Supers for this moment. The meter keeps climbing, and if the boss is not dead before 100%, the attempt is lost.
Rewards and Run Preparation
According to player reports, Pantheon 2.0 hands out new armor sets for each class, returning weapons with a new origin trait, holofoil variants, the Godslayer title, and emblems, including the Morgeth Surpassing emblem for completing all of its stages and the Surpassing Victory Triumph.
If assembling a coordinated six and learning symbols is not an option, you can pick up the run through The Pantheon: Morgeth Surpassing, and continue the series with The Pantheon: Insurrection Prime Revolutionary. For broader progress, there is the Raids bundle and the Dungeons bundle, and if your Power level falls short, Power leveling helps.
