Diablo 4 Masterworking Guide: Quality 25 and Capstones
Masterworking makes the equipment you already want to wear stronger. It improves an item's Quality, then offers a final random affix bonus. The best use of your materials is usually to finish a sound base, improve the rest of your equipment and only then chase an ideal final roll.
This guide covers Diablo IV Season 15, Season of Hell's Legacy, and live patch 3.2.3, checked October 21, 2026. Masterworking is a permanent Blacksmith system available in both Seasonal and Eternal realms. Its current Quality system replaced the old 12-rank progression: instructions about critical hits at ranks 4, 8 and 12 are historical.
Unlocking Masterworking and choosing an item
Visit a Blacksmith and open the Masterworking tab. The service unlocks when you first collect Obducite. You do not need to follow the old route of completing a tier-46 Nightmare Dungeon to unlock the Pit. Finding the material and having eligible equipment are separate requirements.
Use eligible Ancestral Legendary equipment or Unique equipment, including Mythic Uniques. Weapons, armor and jewelry are the normal equipment targets. Common, Magic and Rare drops are not the bases to bring for this endgame process. An item rejected by the menu needs its own eligibility or modification restriction resolved; having enough Gold does not bypass that restriction.
Tempering is no longer a prerequisite. You can begin Masterworking before applying a Temper, although settling the desired affixes first makes spending easier to judge. An eligible Unique does not need to acquire a Legendary Aspect or become a different rarity merely to be Masterworked. For an old Eternal stash item, inspect its actual status rather than assuming every legacy or Unmodifiable item follows current-drop rules.
Choose a piece with the right function for your build: a useful weapon, a defensive base that fixes survivability, or jewelry with the resource and cooldown properties you need. A visually impressive Greater Affix on an irrelevant stat is not enough reason to spend your entire reserve.
Quality 25 and the final Capstone Bonus
Each normal Masterworking action adds a random 2-5 Quality, stopping at a maximum of 25. Each Quality point improves eligible affix values by 1% and also improves the item's base weapon damage, armor or resistance. Quality 25 therefore provides a 25% Quality increase before considering the final affix bonus.
Quality is a progress value, not a count of button presses. A jump from Quality 10 to 14 is one paid action. Different sequences of jumps can require different numbers of actions, so there is no single guaranteed total bill for reaching 25. Normal upgrades do not fail; the variable is the Quality gained.
At Quality 25, perform the additional final upgrade to obtain the Capstone Bonus. It improves one randomly selected eligible affix by 50%. Reaching 25 and applying this extra upgrade are distinct steps. Check the highlighted affix afterward rather than leaving the forge as soon as the Quality counter is full.
The bonus can land on an ordinary affix, a Greater Affix or a Tempered affix. It does not replace the item's Legendary Aspect or rewrite its signature Unique power. Increases to affix values should not be read as a promise that every number printed anywhere in a power description is boosted; special non-scaling properties retain their own rules.

Quality upgrades lead to 25; the Capstone is a separate final action.
Greater Affixes and what the bonus really changes
A Greater Affix is a stronger version of an equipment affix, identified by its star marker and tooltip. Masterworking preserves that status and can add the Capstone to the same line. The existing Greater Affix and the final bonus can therefore support one especially important stat together.
Masterworking itself does not turn an ordinary affix into a Greater Affix. Early test descriptions of that conversion were superseded by the released 50% Capstone design. Nor can you stack three new Capstone hits onto one line by repeatedly paying: rerolling replaces the current selection. The old triple-critical-hit strategy belongs to a different system.
As a simple Quality example, 800 base armor becomes 1,000 at Quality 25 before other modifiers. Do not apply that example directly to your character's total mitigation or damage: the final result also depends on other items, stat interactions, caps and rounding. For skill ranks and threshold-based builds, compare the actual resulting tooltip with the value your build needs.
Tempering, Masterworking and Enchanting
System | Where | What it changes |
Tempering | Blacksmith | Adds the selected learned Tempered affix to compatible equipment |
Masterworking | Blacksmith | Raises Quality and applies the final random affix bonus |
Enchanting | Occultist | Replaces one eligible affix line, with repeat attempts on that same line |
Current Tempering lets you choose the learned affix rather than randomly drawing the affix type from a manual. That is the place to add the intended function; Masterworking then improves eligible values already on the item. You do not need two Tempers before Masterworking, as older guides required.
A practical order is to inspect the base, decide on its enchant, settle the Temper you intend to use, then invest in Quality and evaluate the Capstone. This is spending advice, not an enforced crafting sequence. Re-enchanting or re-tempering an already Masterworked item retains its Quality. Review the resulting item afterward, especially if you changed the line that made its previous final bonus valuable.
Do not assume that every rarity supports every Temper or Cube recipe just because it supports Masterworking. These are separate eligibility checks. The Occultist does not perform Masterworking, and a Cube transformation is not the Blacksmith's Capstone reroll.

Choose the service that changes the property you actually need.
Materials and costs in the current system
Obducite is the main material for raising Quality. Neathiron is a separate late-game resource used when rerolling the final bonus. Ingolith is not the middle stage of current Masterworking, and the historical three-material Pit ladder is not the route for upgrading today's equipment.
Gold and supporting salvage materials also matter. The displayed recipe can include materials such as Forgotten Souls and the relevant equipment salvage. Inspect the complete transaction for your item; do not apply one old fixed armor recipe to weapons, jewelry and every rarity.
Blizzard's released Quality-cost examples, corroborated by the current specialist guide, give the following Obducite components. These are costs at the listed current Quality, not cumulative costs for reaching it and not complete Gold/material invoices.
Current Quality | Obducite component | Meaning |
0 | 10 | Starting Quality upgrade example |
5 | 25 | Higher current Quality increases the price |
15 | 66 | Later actions require a larger reserve |
25 | 100 | Published maximum-Quality action example; not the separate reroll price |
For a Capstone reroll, the specialist reference lists 1,000 Obducite, 1 Neathiron and 1,000,000 Gold. Confirm the quote before paying. It is a different transaction from a normal Quality upgrade; the 100-Obducite example at Quality 25 is not a promise of a 100-Obducite reroll.
No material conversion is required to follow this current workflow. Do not spend newly acquired Neathiron as though it were the old rank-9-to-12 resource, or plan a farm around historical Ingolith conversion ratios. Old Eternal inventories and any remaining legacy exchange options need their own live-menu check.
Reroll the Capstone without losing Quality
If the final bonus misses your priority, use its reroll option at the Blacksmith. Quality stays at 25. The current system does not offer the old full reset to Quality 0 followed by rebuilding every rank.
The replacement is random and can select the same affix again. It replaces the existing Capstone rather than accumulating another 50% bonus. The reroll spends its materials and Gold without refunding earlier attempts. Do not pay expecting a free undo or guaranteed eventual result within a fixed number of tries.
Rerolling is most sensible when the base is a long-term keeper and the target makes a meaningful difference: reaching a cooldown threshold, sustaining your main skill or solving a defensive weakness. Accept a useful alternative if several affixes help. A minor damage increase may be less valuable than Masterworking several other slots.
Salvaging an old upgraded item is a separate action that destroys it and can return some upgrade materials. It is not a reversible reset, does not repay your Gold and should not be budgeted as a guaranteed refund of every Capstone attempt. Confirm that a replacement works before dismantling equipment that enables the build.

Spend on a reroll when the item and target justify it; keep Quality progress either way.
Where to farm the materials
For Obducite, start with Nightmare Dungeons you can clear reliably. Favor useful Sigil modifiers such as Treasure Breach when available, rather than assuming every dungeon produces the same return. These drops have had fixes and tuning since earlier seasons, so old screenshots of enormous material totals are a poor budget.
Infernal Hordes provide another route: collect Aether and choose the Spoils of Materials. Kurast Undercity with an appropriate Tribute of Refinement is an alternative if you have access to that expansion activity. A Tribute run and a normal Undercity run are not interchangeable reward promises. The Pit is no longer the ordinary completion-reward farm for this material.
For Neathiron, documented sources include World Bosses, Bartuc in Infernal Hordes, Astaroth in Escalation Dungeons and Belial. The current item record also lists rare acquisition from elites and Nightmare Dungeon bosses. These are source listings, not a guaranteed amount per kill. Do not mix the returning Neathiron item with an old database entry describing deep-Pit rewards.
Choose difficulty by completed useful runs, not by the highest Torment you can enter. Difficulty, modifiers and the selected reward can change yields; there is no universal materials-per-hour winner for every build. A group helps if it improves clear speed, but do not budget an invented fixed party multiplier. The crafting service is repeatable while you can pay; individual source activities still follow their own schedules and access rules.
In Season 15, the Urn of Masterworking blessing increases the chance of additional Obducite drops. It is an optional seasonal aid, not a prerequisite for the permanent system and not an Eternal Realm bonus. Claim relevant Season Rank material rewards before committing to another long farm.
How to spend without stalling progression
Begin with equipment that solves the next obstacle. If you survive comfortably but bosses take too long, a useful weapon and offensive stats deserve attention. If repeated deaths stop completions, defensive upgrades can produce more progress than a perfect damage roll. Resource or cooldown improvements matter when they make your main combat loop reliable.
Raise Quality on several durable equipment choices before repeatedly rerolling a single Capstone. Set a session budget that leaves enough Gold and materials for other upgrades. Test the changed item in your actual content, then decide whether another reroll addresses a real weakness or merely improves an already comfortable clear.
When replacing a slot, compare the new base's eventual potential as well as its current unupgraded numbers. Keep the old item until the replacement is ready. The goal is a stronger complete character, not a perfect highlighted affix attached to equipment you will soon discard.
FAQ
How do I unlock Masterworking?
Collect Obducite and visit the Blacksmith. Eligible equipment is also required. The old tier-46 Nightmare Dungeon and Pit-unlock route is no longer the current unlock instruction.
What is the maximum, and do I need to Temper first?
Quality caps at 25, followed by a separate Capstone upgrade. Eligible Ancestral Legendaries and Unique equipment, including Mythic Uniques, can be improved. Tempering is no longer a prerequisite.
Can I reset Masterworking to zero for another result?
No. Reroll the final Capstone while retaining Quality 25. The replacement is random, does not stack extra hits and does not refund spent materials or Gold.
Where do Obducite and Neathiron come from?
Farm Obducite through suitable Nightmare Dungeons, material rewards in Infernal Hordes or the appropriate Undercity Tribute. Neathiron sources include World Bosses, Bartuc, Astaroth and Belial; it serves Capstone rerolls rather than the old late-rank ladder.
