Diablo 4 Season 15 Overview: Hell's Legacy and Start Priorities

Last Updated:21 Oct 2026

Season 15 of Diablo 4, Season of Hell's Legacy, is live. It began on September 15, 2026, as part of the Diablo series' 30th anniversary celebration. This overview is checked for October 21, 2026 and patch 3.2.3. Blizzard's checked announcements do not give a confirmed season end date, so an estimated duration should not be treated as a deadline.

The practical starting point is the seasonal questline: unlock the Prime Evil powers, choose an alignment that supports your preferred activities, then build around Soul Splinters without ignoring their drawbacks. Alongside that temporary loop, the update adds permanent equipment and crafting improvements that also matter to Eternal characters.

What is seasonal and what stays?

Season 15 combines a limited seasonal theme with changes to the wider game. Buying a cosmetic pass is separate from owning an expansion, and neither should be confused with choosing the Seasonal Realm.

The season's temporary powers and encounters are not promised as permanent Eternal features. Do not plan a future Eternal build around keeping their bonuses. Blizzard has explicitly made the nine heritage Uniques permanent; that statement does not automatically apply to Soul Splinters or the seasonal reputation tracks. Exact end-of-season handling should follow the eventual transition announcement.

Lord of Hatred is especially relevant to War Plans, the Horadric Cube and the Talisman. Vessel of Hatred gives access to its own content, including Kurast Undercity; it is not a substitute for Lord of Hatred's systems. Check the content included in your edition before choosing an activity-dependent plan.

Prime Evil powers and the seasonal questline

Deckard Cain's lost soul guides the story through the memories of three dark wanderers. Complete the seasonal chain and defeat echoes of Diablo beneath Tristram Cathedral, Baal at Arreat Summit and Mephisto in the Durance of Hate to collect the three Splinters of Evil.

You bear one Prime Evil's Splinter at a time. It grants an automatically triggered combat power, a reputation path and activity modifiers, but also increases your vulnerability to the associated Prime Evil. Each track has eight activity modifiers and six power upgrades. This is distinct from the eight socketable Soul Splinters discussed below.

Alignment

Activities it modifies

Damage of its iconic power

Diablo - Terror

Helltide and Infernal Hordes

Fire

Baal - Destruction

Kurast Undercity and Lair Bosses

Cold

Mephisto - Hatred

The Pit and Nightmare Dungeons

Physical

All three also modify Tree of Whispers content. Choose primarily by the activities you intend to repeat. A dungeon-focused player has a practical reason to start with Mephisto; a player preparing Helltide and Horde sessions can start with Diablo. This is a farming recommendation, not a universal ranking of combat power.

To change your path, obtain another Splinter from the largest Waking Nightmares. You are not required to commit forever. Finish the seasonal story before trying to shortcut the power unlock: patch 3.2.3 prevents an early-use bug that could block completion. For an already affected character, Blizzard's workaround is to finish the questline on a new character in the same Hardcore/Standard and SSF partition, unlocking the powers for that partition; the patch does not reset existing quest progress.

Waking Nightmares have three different forms

The largest encounters are multi-level, Capstone-type dungeons based on historic Prime Evil confrontations. You first visit them through the seasonal story and can replay them for rewards on Torment. They use fixed difficulty settings; pinnacle versions are available at Torment X and above. Those encounters are a later goal, not a first-session requirement.

A second form consists of ordinary-length dungeons at fixed world locations, recreating places such as Diablo II's Den of Evil. The third form appears unexpectedly in the open world and contains a short boss fight or enemy waves. A quick portal encounter and a large Prime Evil dungeon therefore involve very different time commitments.

Waking Nightmares is the live seasonal name. Do not mistake the earlier PTR label Challenge Dungeons for a separate current endgame ladder, or import the Pit's rules into these encounters. When following a route, check which form it actually targets before setting aside a full session.

The major additions combine a seasonal combat loop with permanent equipment and progression changes.

Soul Splinters are gems with a cost

The eight types are Anguish, Sin, Lies, Black Soulstone, Pain, Mother, Hellfire and Damnation. They occupy Jewelry sockets and combine a useful effect with a liability. The normal arrangement allows up to three across your jewelry. Item-specific exceptions such as Leoric's Crown should be read from the current tooltip rather than generalized to every helm.

For example, a damage-oriented gem may undermine the critical-strike setup it is inserted into, while a farming gem can make the wearer easier to kill. Check resources, defense and mobility after each change. A higher rarity is not a reason to ignore the underlying trade-off.

Soul Splinters come in Magic, Rare, Legendary and Unique versions. Amalgamation combines five copies of the same type and rarity into the next rarity through the Horadric Cube. Keep useful duplicates separate from disposable gems. This is socketable progression, not a new wallet currency or a boss-summoning material.

Nightmare Dungeons with appropriate Gem Reserve affixes offer a practical target-farming route: their reserve chests can drop the corresponding Splinter. For instance, Topaz Reserve can provide Sin. This improves targeting without guaranteeing every chest or a fixed number of runs. Begin with a gem that fits the build, then work toward its upgrade instead of collecting all eight at once.

Start with the systems that improve your next session

Create a seasonal character, or use Rebirth on an Eternal character if you want to retain that hero's identity. Rebirth resets the character to level 1 while preserving class, name, appearance and mode; saved cosmetic ensembles can also carry over. Empty equipment and personal inventory into the Eternal stash first. Rebirth does not import the old hero's level and gear into seasonal progression.

Unlike Season 14 and its Death Cult theme, Season 15 centers on memories and the Prime Evils. Do not carry the previous temporary powers into a new build plan. When a season ends, its character moves to Eternal rather than entering the next season with accumulated levels and equipment. Account cosmetics and items in the Eternal stash are separate from a seasonal starting loadout.

Follow the seasonal quest prompts, unlock your class mechanic and check Season Rank objectives while playing. Choose an alignment that overlaps your immediate goals. If your build is missing a required Unique, use a workable setup until it drops instead of copying a finished endgame skill bar too early.

Expert and Penitent now unlock after the Prologue rather than requiring full campaign completion. That change is not a recommendation to jump immediately to the highest option. Increase difficulty when ordinary enemies, bosses and resource demands are consistently manageable. Repeated deaths and long fights can erase the benefit of a larger reward multiplier.

Endgame priorities and what changed

The familiar activities still have different jobs. Season 15 adds alignment modifiers and improves rewards; it does not make every activity interchangeable.

Activity

Practical use

Season 15 point to check

Nightmare Dungeons

Gear, crafting materials and Gem Reserve farming

Mephisto alignment; reserve type matters for Soul Splinters

The Pit

Glyph upgrades and harder progression

Increased high-tier experience; mastery failures can reduce Glyph rewards

Helltide and Infernal Hordes

Repeatable combat, equipment and materials

Diablo alignment; early Torment Legendary drops improved

Kurast Undercity

Tribute-directed rewards

Baal alignment; Refinement Tributes gained Forgotten Souls

Lair Bosses

Targeted Unique and Mythic hunting

Baal alignment; use the current boss loot pool

Whispers and War Plans

Combine objectives, resources and experience

Better cache rewards; War Plans progress shared within matching partitions

Torment currently extends to XII. High-tier experience was increased, including Torment X-XII, and higher Pit tiers received additional experience. These changes reward a strong build; they do not make Torment X a sensible baseline for every returning player. Start at the tier you can finish efficiently.

War Plans points are shared only when all three partitions match: Seasonal/Eternal, Hardcore/Non-Hardcore and Standard/Solo Self-Found. Characters allocate their shared points separately. Your Eternal progress therefore does not simply become a fresh seasonal character's progress. At season transitions, Hardcore carry-over also needs a living character in the relevant partition to preserve accumulated progress under the announced rule.

Gear and crafting changes worth knowing

Legendary drop rates rose in Torment I-V, reducing early dependence on random Cube upgrades to complete useful Aspects. All Uniques can now drop from level 1 on any difficulty. That does not mean every Unique comes from every enemy: target-farming still depends on the item and loot pool.

The nine new Legacy Uniques are permanent heritage items. Examples include Leoric's Crown, Stone of Jordan and Messerschmidt's Reaver. Their collection name is separate from the Legacy status of an obsolete old copy. Returning Eternal players should inspect old gear instead of assuming a familiar name guarantees modern crafting eligibility.

The direct Cube upgrade to Mythic now preserves the exact input item's affixes, Tempering and Masterworking. It cannot use an Unmodifiable item, and its output carries a Crafted tag: only one such tagged item can be equipped. Mythics from other services are not all subject to that particular tag limit. The Blacksmith also has an option targeting Iconic Mythics rather than mixing every Mythic into one cache.

Two additional Cube tools serve different purposes. Affix Value Reroll changes base affix values while protecting specified existing traits such as Greater Affixes and Tempers. Horadric Reroll randomizes base affixes on eligible Legendary-or-better Charms and Seals while preserving their set bonuses and special powers. Read the recipe before spending a keeper; rerolling values and replacing the affix selection solve different problems.

Crafting became less expensive in several places. Enchanting an Ancestral item now uses 10 Forgotten Souls instead of 25, while crafting an Infernal Horde Compass costs 500 Sigil Powder instead of 666. These are individual material components, not the entire price of every service. Existing Tempering and Masterworking still require eligible items and materials; Season 15 is not a universal item-power reset.

Unlock the seasonal loop first, then align activities, gear and shared progression with a concrete goal.

Class balance without a tier list

Patch 3.2.1 substantially changes skills, Aspects, Uniques and Paragon interactions. Barbarian's damage scaling per 10 Strength fell from 1.1% to 0.8%. Druid, Necromancer, Paladin and Sorcerer received increases from 1.25% to 1.625% for their respective primary stats. Those figures describe a scaling component, not the final damage change of every build.

Necromancer received support for several alternatives to its dominant builds, including Corpse Explosion and Bone/Blood attacks. Sorcerer gained support for Cold-focused setups. Rogue's skill combinations and Paragon interactions need a fresh check, and Warlock changes spread power across skills and summons rather than supporting blind reuse of an old planner.

Spiritborn's Tzic Rune bug was fixed and Aspect of Supremacy's maximum stacks were reduced, with compensating buffs to skills, Paragon boards and Unique weapons. Spirit-changing variants now add the new Spirit tag instead of replacing the original one, making Spirit Hall interactions more consistent. A high damage clip relying on the old interaction is not a reliable current benchmark.

Single Resistance affixes were also strengthened, so recheck defensive choices alongside damage. Use a build updated for the live season and your intended content. Patch 3.2.3 is the current version; a guide written for the 3.2.0 PTR may contain both discarded systems and outdated numbers.

Season Rank and cosmetic rewards

The current journey uses nine Season Ranks and 125 objectives. Advertised rewards include up to 14 Skill Points, 42 Paragon points, 10 Resplendent Sparks and five Mythic Unique Caches, plus equipment materials and cosmetics. Roughly 15% of objectives require Lord of Hatred, including objectives needed for Rank VIII and the complete reward set. These are progression totals, not an instant login grant.

Smoldering Ashes fund Season Blessings through this progression, separate from Favor used to claim Reliquary cosmetics. Choose blessings that support what you are currently doing, such as material farming or Glyph upgrades. Do not buy a premium cosmetic bundle expecting it to replace the objective unlocks.

The free Battle Pass Reliquary includes the Eidolon mount, its barding and the Ancient Town Portal. Season Rank separately offers the Dark Wanderbear pet and Banner of the Three mount trophy. Premium Reliquaries add cosmetic collections; their class armor appearances are not combat equipment. Prices and promotional rewards are unnecessary for planning the seasonal loop, and the September Twitch campaign has already ended.

FAQ

When did Diablo 4 Season 15 start?

Season of Hell's Legacy began on September 15, 2026 and is active on the October 21 check date. The current patch is 3.2.3. No confirmed end date appears in the checked Blizzard announcements.

Do I need a new character for Season 15?

You need a seasonal start. Create a seasonal character or use Rebirth to reset an eligible Eternal hero to level 1. Move its equipment and inventory into the Eternal stash before Rebirth.

Which Season 15 changes remain in Eternal?

The nine heritage Uniques, crafting updates and general quality-of-life improvements are separate from the seasonal theme. Prime Evil powers, reputation and Soul Splinters are not promised as permanent Eternal systems. Expansion features still require the relevant ownership.

What should I prioritize after starting?

Complete the seasonal questline, unlock your class mechanic and choose an alignment for the activities you will repeat. Advance Season Rank alongside normal play, then target missing gear, Glyphs or crafting materials instead of raising difficulty without a clear purpose.
