The season that rebuilt the endgame

Rise Up is Year 8 Season 1 of The Division 2 (Y8S1). Patch 2.24 arrived in early April 2026 and brought several systems at once: the Escalation mode, a new gear class called Prototype Gear, a reworked Retaliation mode with the Black Tusk faction, the modular Recombinant global modifier, two new Exotic weapons and an Exotic mask.

The season is over. Y8S2 Into the Dark launched on June 16, 2026, so Rise Up is covered here as a retrospective. Data is current as of 10/17/2026.

The part that matters most is Prototype Gear. It raises the stat ceiling and sets what you farm in the endgame, and nearly everything else in the season revolves around it.

Escalation: ten tiers and tokens

Escalation is an endgame activity built on a rotating mission pool. Every mission has ten difficulty tiers. The first is free, higher tiers cost Escalation Tokens, and the price climbs with the tier. A set of five missions refreshed every Tuesday.

Rewards scale with the tier. The headline prize is Prototype Gear, and during the season Escalation was the main source of it. Since the Y8S1.2 update on May 12, 2026, an Escalation Requisition vendor exchanges tokens for Prototype Gear caches.

Tokens are limited, so pick the tier your build clears comfortably rather than the highest one out of curiosity. The free first tier is a good way to scout a mission and test a build.

It helps to plan your week around Tuesday, when the rotation refreshes. You see the whole set of five missions at once and can pick the one your build suits best.

Prototype Gear and Augments

Prototype is a new quality level above High-End and Named items. Attributes can reach up to 1.5x the old values, so existing builds stay viable but now have a higher ceiling.

An item can be upgraded to Prototype only at max level and max Expertise. The upgrade consumes a Prototype Core. After that the item cannot be optimized or recalibrated, so check its rolls first. Cores mostly come from dismantling Prototype Gear, and Prototype Core Caches drop in Raids and the Incursion. If you do not have time to stockpile them, there is a Prototype Core farm.

In Raids, the Incursion and PvP, Prototype items are normalized: stats are set to the low end of the Prototype range and Augments are disabled. The real value of Prototype is in the open world and regular PvE.

Prototype items have an Augment, a bonus talent from a shared pool. The pool includes Quantum, Echo, Atomize, Amalgam, Trapper, Entropy, Anomaly, Paradox and Synesthesia. Here is what five of them do:

  • Quantum - a small chance to briefly become immune to damage.

  • Echo - a bullet has a chance to deal its damage a second time.

  • Atomize - grenade radius and damage go up.

  • Amalgam - a bullet hit has a chance to apply a random status effect.

  • Paradox - a chance to refill part of the magazine.

Retaliation and Black Tusk

Black Tusk became a permanent Retaliation faction. The mode was already part of the endgame, and Y8S1 rebuilt it around the new faction.

The Agitation Overclock system lets you trigger up to three Retaliations back-to-back. If a Retaliation is lost, Black Tusk can take a Control Point, and you will have to retake it.

The season also introduced the elite BTSU Team 9 squad. It is noticeably more dangerous than regular kill squads, and according to player reports it is a Rise Up seasonal feature.

According to player reports, beating these squads opens a chance at Exotic blueprints for seasonal Climax missions, as well as for the Capacitor and Vindicator. A full Black Tusk Retaliation can drop blueprints for Raid and Dark Zone Exotics, including Eagle Bearer, Bighorn, Sheriff, Provocator and Ouroboros.

Recombinant: three build modules

Recombinant is the season's global modifier, built on three modules: Offense, Defense and Utility. The idea is that you assemble your own profile instead of receiving a fixed bonus.

According to player reports, active modifiers strengthen a module while passive ones redistribute bonuses between directions. Some modules, players say, unlocked through the goals of the Season Journey missions, and the rest were bought with the season currency.

The practical approach is simple. Pick one direction that fits your build and invest in it, instead of spreading points across all three modules. There is no universal setup here: a damage build and a survivability build want different modules.

New Exotics of the season

Rise Up added two Exotic weapons and a mask. Both weapons revolve around swapping: the bonus builds while the item is holstered and triggers when you draw it. The mask works differently, with a passive bonus.

Agitator is an assault rifle on the F2000 platform with the Perturb talent, 850 RPM and a 50-round magazine. Holster it for 10 seconds, then draw it: the next 20 seconds give +25% rate of fire, +30% weapon damage and double threat. While holstered, its threat generation drops by 50%. Swapping away early ends the bonuses. Agitator came from the paid track of the Season Pass from level 1, or free at level 69.

Whiplash is a pistol with the Faster Than Reloading talent. It primes after 5 seconds holstered, auto-reloads both of your weapons on the draw and grants +20% rate of fire and +50% weapon damage until the magazine runs empty. Swap speed is also up by 50%. It drops from the Pentagon Climax mission, added on May 26, 2026. Some players report a guaranteed first drop on Master, but it is safer to plan for several runs. Whiplash is also available as a service.

Investor is an Exotic mask with the Slotted talent. The bonus depends on the color of the attributes in its slots: red gives +10% critical damage, yellow +5% skill efficiency, and blue +1% armor regeneration. It is a free reward at level 29 of the season track, once per account.

Season track and rewards

The key Exotic rewards on the track are Investor on the free branch and Agitator, which you could take on the paid branch from level 1 or free at level 69. Buying the pass only made sense for players who wanted Agitator right away.

Update 2.27 (Y8S1.3, May 26, 2026) added Rise Up Stretch Goals, live from June 2. After the season ended, Agitator and Investor entered the general Exotic loot pool, so the track is no longer the only way to get them.

What to do with Rise Up today

The season is over, but its systems and items still matter. If you are coming back to the game, here is the order of work.

  • Prototype Gear. Collect Prototype Cores and upgrade only items you are sure to keep in your build.

  • Exotics. Agitator and Investor drop with general loot, while Whiplash means a trip to Pentagon, ideally on Master.

  • Retaliation. The Black Tusk mode stayed permanent, and it is a source of Exotic blueprints.

One more note on Prototype: do not upgrade everything. Wait for an item with good rolls and a fitting Augment, because the upgrade cannot be undone. In Raids and PvP this matters twice as much, since all Prototype items are normalized there and the edge over regular gear is much smaller.

If you have no time to farm, some of these steps can be covered by DVING services linked above.
