FC 27 Skill Moves: Controls, Practice and Match Decisions

Skill moves in FC 27 are useful when they solve a particular moment: opening a passing lane, escaping the first defender or preparing a shot. A long combination without a clear exit often ends in a turnover even when the animation itself is performed correctly.

Learn a small set of actions first. Check your control layout and the moves available to your chosen footballer, then practise one exit in both directions. Add speed, a defender and match use only after that foundation feels repeatable.

Begin with three basic actions: Ball Roll, Fake Shot and Drag Back. The guide covers inputs, suitable situations and drills. Check your layout and Simplified Skill Moves before practising so that you compare the same input method throughout.

Find your current skill commands

From the main menu, open Play, then Learn to Play and Practice Arena. Pause and select Skill Moves Help. The nearby Button Help covers standard actions. Record one relevant move together with its displayed requirements and input rather than trying to memorise the entire list at once.

Check that the selected layout matches the one you use in matches. Device labels differ, and remapped controls are another reason not to rely on a random controller diagram. If an action will not repeat, compare the instructions inside the game before changing anything else.

Keep the same footballer for your first exercise. This helps separate an input mistake from the characteristics of a different player. Check the move's requirements in the help menu and player profile; overall item rating alone does not establish which actions are available.

Simplified Skill Moves in the Dribbling settings

Check Simplified Skill Moves before practising skills. The option is off in this example.

What Simplified Skill Moves changes

The dribbling settings include Simplified Skill Moves. When enabled, the game chooses a contextual skill from one of the four main right-stick directions. The option is off by default. Treat it as a different input method when learning conventional combinations.

If your aim is to reproduce a specific move, decide which input method you are practising first. Do not toggle the option after every attempt, because you would be comparing the same stick movement under different conditions. You can try the simplified setting in a separate session and decide whether it suits you.

Simpler input does not choose the tactical objective. You still need to see the open side, the covering defender and your next action. Beating the first opponent achieves little if the ball then arrives directly at the second defender.

Three basic skills to learn first

These are default Classic inputs for PlayStation and Xbox controllers, including controllers on PC; if you remap buttons, use the action names in your own help screen.

These inputs use conventional controls with Simplified Skill Moves off. Read directions relative to the footballer’s facing direction: the sideways exit changes when the player turns.

Move

Requirement

Input

Ball Roll

2 stars

Briefly hold the right stick left or right relative to the player’s direction.

Fake Shot

1 star

Press the shoot or cross action, immediately followed by pass; use the left stick to choose the exit.

Drag Back

2 stars

Hold L1 + R1 on PlayStation or LB + RB on Xbox and move the left stick backwards.

Release sprint for the first drill. Near the box, practise a Ball Roll followed immediately by a short pass. If the defender has already closed the sideways exit, keep possession through a teammate rather than forcing another skill. Try a Fake Shot when its shooting feint can change the next action, and a Drag Back when you need to turn away from a blocked route.

Build a small working set

Choose actions by what they contribute to an attack. Three useful starting jobs are moving the ball away from pressure, turning out of a blocked route and creating a short exit into space. Select the actual moves for those jobs from the available in-game help.

Objective

When to try it

Useful result

Shift before passing

A defender blocks the direct lane

The move opens a clear passing angle

Turn away from pressure

Forward movement is blocked but support is behind

You retain possession and can find a teammate

Exit into space

The opponent commits to one side

The first touch after the move attacks an open area

Prepare a shot

The defender covers your shooting angle

You can shoot without another unnecessary touch

This is a decision-training plan, not a ranking based on hidden animation effectiveness. Judge the continuation: did you pass, keep the ball or create a comfortable shot? Completing a skill animation is different from winning the situation.

Exercise one: one input, both sides

In the arena, choose one move and reproduce the displayed input carefully. Return to a similar starting position after each attempt. Make several calm repetitions to one side and then the other. If you become confused, reduce the number of actions you are trying to perform together.

Inspect the first movement after the skill as well as the animation. Choose your continuation in advance: a short pass, controlled possession or an exit to the side. This teaches a skill-to-action connection instead of an isolated stick gesture without a purpose.

Once the action becomes repeatable, practise while attacking in a different direction. This checks your orientation, because screen movement and the footballer's position do not always feel identical. If mistakes appear, return to the help prompt rather than compensating with a faster combination.

Pedri on the ball facing a defender in FC 27

Read the defender and your next attacking option before taking an action on the ball.

Exercise two: defender and exit

Use an appropriate practice or normal match to find a similar one-on-one situation. Begin with some space before the defender reaches close contact. Review three things afterwards: the ball's starting position, the direction of the exit and what the next touch achieved.

Do not add a second skill automatically. If the first action opens a pass, take it. Another animation gives the opponent extra time to react. If the defender has not committed and there is no safe route, keeping the ball through a teammate is often wiser than attacking the same blocked side again.

Location matters too. Losing possession near the opposing box and losing it in front of your own centre-backs carry different costs. Introduce unfamiliar moves where an error does not give the opponent the shortest possible route to your goal.

PlayStyles and player selection

Trickster and Trickster+ are separate player features associated with special movements. Check whether your selected footballer has them in the profile. Do not assume that every highly rated attacker automatically offers the same set of actions.

You do not need a new signing simply to start learning. Understand the actions already available in your squad first. If you want a move only for a spectacular replay and cannot identify a normal match situation for it, postpone it until basic ball control feels comfortable.

Measure whether practice is helping

After a short series of matches, review decision quality rather than the number of attempts. Are you losing possession less often in the chosen situation? Is a pass becoming available after the shift? Can you decline a skill when no exit exists? These signs matter more than one spectacular goal.

Keep a brief note of the situation, chosen movement and reason for losing the ball. If the input works but the encounter fails, practise the starting moment and next pass. If the wrong action appears, return to the settings and control help instead.

FAQ

Where are the exact buttons for my platform?

Open Practice Arena through Play and Learn to Play, pause, then select Skill Moves Help. Check your active layout.

Why does the same input produce a different result?

Check Simplified Skill Moves, your layout, move requirements and execution conditions. Avoid changing several settings together.

Do I need to learn every skill?

Start with a small set of clear jobs. Expand it once the first actions work against resistance.

What comes after a successful skill?

Use the passing lane, space or shot you created. Do not continue a combination simply because another move is available.
