Best Escape from Tarkov Maps: Choose for Your Raid

The best Escape from Tarkov map depends on the purpose of your raid. A location for short shooting practice may be a poor fit for relaxed material gathering, while a route through valuable rooms can be inefficient without a known extraction. Choose the map together with your objective, budget and available time.

This comparison covers ten locations: Ground Zero, Customs, Woods, Factory, Shoreline, Interchange, Reserve, Streets of Tarkov, Lighthouse and The Lab. It compares ways to play rather than promising equal profits to every player. Newer separate locations are outside this ten-map comparison.

Before choosing, check map availability on your profile, your active task conditions and the extraction list. Permanent PvP, PvE Zone and Seasonal Character progression are separate. A map unlocked on one character does not prove access on another.

How to compare maps

Consider four questions: can you complete the objective, what does an attempt cost, how clear is the return route, and how well does the game run on your computer? An expensive item alone does not make a map profitable: you still need to extract and sell it, and replace any lost equipment.

Give early raids a limited objective. For example, explore one block and return instead of visiting every interesting building. Once you can repeat the route, add another section. This makes failures easier to understand: a wrong direction, excessive searching, a fight or an underestimated extraction.

Keep three rankings separate: learning convenience, loot opportunities and combat intensity. Factory can be useful combat practice while being a poor choice for somebody trying to learn navigation without constant pressure. Woods does not become useless simply because distances are longer.

Ground Zero: start with a small urban route

Ground Zero suits an introduction to urban navigation: the street, building entrance, floor and return path require different landmarks. On the first route, remember the entrance you plan to leave through as well as the task location. A familiar-looking interior without a street reference can turn a short objective into wandering.

Choose it when your next progression objective involves this location and you want to learn a limited area. Do not mistake a starting-map role for a safe encounter: an opponent around a corner, an exposed crossing and an unfamiliar staircase remain threats. Check matchmaking conditions and availability in your mode instead of applying an old lobby description to every profile.

One understandable crossing followed by extraction teaches more than a long list of buildings. Afterwards, note where you lost your bearings and which landmark helped you recover the route.

For an initial urban route, consider a submachine gun or assault rifle you already know how to use. This is a choice for close contact and movement between streets and interiors, rather than a requirement to buy an expensive build. Check ammunition and magazine compatibility and practise reloading before the raid; an unfamiliar weapon adds another learning objective.

Ground Zero has an important matchmaking history: in 0.14.5.0, BSG introduced separate groups through level 20 inclusive and from level 21. A squad member above level 20 switched the selection to the experienced version with a warning; level did not determine Scav matchmaking or co-op practice access. The experienced version could also feature Kollontay. This is a specific patch rule to check against the current mode-selection screen; it does not replace checking the character’s story access.

Include body armor and a helmet in your Ground Zero budget, rather than spending only on the weapon. For a learning run, choose equipment you can afford to replace; an expensive gun should not consume all the money set aside for protection. Check the installed plates before buying a carrier: in 1.1.0.0, Ref's inventory shifted primarily toward armor vests and carriers without plates, with corresponding price reductions. Compare a cheap offer as a complete setup, rather than by its appearance alone. Check the protected zones and durability of both the body armor and helmet; one armor-class number does not describe the entire coverage.

Customs: tasks and gradual route expansion

Customs is useful when an objective combines movement between industrial sites with work inside buildings. Dorms and the USEC warehouse are different destinations: do not visit both simply because they appear on a loot list. First decide which matters in this particular raid.

Patch 1.2.0.0 adjusted PMC and Scav extractions, added new exits and loot spots in locked dorms rooms and the USEC warehouse. It also added the ZB-1013 Key and Guard Post Key. An old route with its former key set therefore needs checking. Locked containers are now guaranteed to contain loot; this does not guarantee an expensive item.

For learning, separate Customs into two kinds of passage: the wooded edge and dense industrial buildings. On the historical in-game paper plan, a wooded band runs above Zagorodnaya Street, separate from yards, railway tracks and large industrial buildings. The river divides built-up areas: for a short circuit, choose one side and one recognisable building, remembering both its approach and the return to the road. Add a river crossing as a separate stage once you recognise the original section in both directions.

Devote one learning visit to approaching detached buildings by the wooded edge, then another to passages between industrial buildings. For an objective in Dorms or the USEC warehouse, distinguish the approach from the work inside beforehand. An outside detour does not equal safety: if you hear fighting or a crossing is occupied, change the approach while retaining an alternative return path. This chooses the character of the route rather than requiring every warehouse and dormitory in one raid.

The in-game Customs and Polikhim plan: the river divides built-up areas, while a wooded band appears above Zagorodnaya Street.

Reshala belongs in the Customs risk profile: the official 0.12.7 expansion notes specifically mentioned a new spawn location for him on the map. That establishes the boss’s association with the location, rather than a current encounter rate or position. An AK with a comfortable sight is a reasonable learning example: check the sight picture and weapon handling beforehand. Deliberately choose whether to approach Dorms or another confined area; a sight alone does not make every crossing safe.

Woods: navigation and distance control

Choose Woods to practise movement through open and forested terrain. Learn to relate direction to major landmarks rather than an individual tree. Build a sequence of recognisable areas and check whether you can follow it backwards.

For a first learning circuit, choose different types of landmark: the large lake’s shore, the sawmill’s buildings and log piles, and a tall rock silhouette on the skyline. Remember the side from which you approached each feature and where the next landmark first became visible. Look back before leaving an exposed area: the reverse view of a shore or yard often differs from its appearance on entry. This circuit practises recognising terrain in both directions; extend it towards other camps after you can confidently retrace the familiar section.

An early official Woods screenshot shows the shoreline and a distinct rock silhouette. These help recognise terrain rather than mapping modern extractions.

This kind of route lets you deliberately choose distance and the timing of exposed crossings. A mistake costs time and orientation. Do not treat trees as continuous cover: identify your next stopping point before crossing a visible area.

For a beginner, this can be a useful learning choice with a specific objective and a known extraction. It may be less suitable for somebody seeking uninterrupted short fights. Calling Woods the worst map hides that difference in purpose and provides little help with the actual decision.

The sawmill is a concrete Woods landmark rather than merely an entry on a loot list: BSG associated Shturman with it when introducing him in 0.12. Plan for the possibility of a boss encounter in that direction without expecting a guaranteed spawn. Learn an approach to the sawmill and a retreat from it before adding other camps to one circuit.

For a concrete weapon choice, consider an SKS or Mosin if your objective allows deliberate fire at distance. Prepare an alternative for close contact, such as a familiar pistol, and practise switching to it. These are authored kit examples rather than promises of cheap trader access or defeating every armour class: check ammunition, weapon availability and total cost separately.

For Woods, also budget for a helmet if you can afford to replace it after a loss. Compare the specific protected zones and their durability: choosing a helmet does not automatically protect the whole face. Assess a more expensive option alongside the rest of the equipment and the raid objective, rather than buying it instead of a supply of ammunition or medical preparation. The helmet supplements your chosen route: it does not replace deciding when to cross exposed ground and where to stop.

Factory: a short combat session

Choose Factory when you want to work on close encounters and fast decisions. Decide what you are testing beforehand: moving between cover, repositioning after firing, or managing equipment under pressure. A death without understanding the mistake is not automatically useful practice.

Do not assume a compact location is safe. Patch 1.2.0.0 fixed Tagilla spawning close to a player at the beginning of a raid; fixing that specific issue does not remove the enemy. If combat is not the objective, searching one more room may conflict with the original plan.

Compare the cost of a series of attempts, rather than one inexpensive kit. The map suits short sessions but does not replace learning extractions and routes elsewhere.

Choose equipment and direction around the raid objective; one kit does not make every map equivalent.

For a low-cost series of Factory drills, compare a pistol, submachine gun and shotgun available to your character. Choose one option and practise its reload and use from cover; constantly rotating through three weapon types makes it harder to identify your own mistake. A low price does not prove sufficient effectiveness: check the ammunition and limit what you are prepared to lose across the whole session.

For Factory, class 4 armor can be one option within a predetermined budget, but it is neither a mandatory entry threshold nor a promise to survive an encounter. Compare the cost of the complete setup with what you are prepared to lose on a practice run: a cheaper replacement lets you repeat the lesson, while more expensive protection should serve a clear objective. Check not only the class but also plate installation, coverage, and durability. To assess opposing ammunition, use the damage and penetration information in the cartridge inspector; BSG also added a display of penetration chances against different armor classes there. Do not turn one such assessment into a guarantee of a fight's outcome.

Shoreline: separate the destination from the approach

Shoreline calls for separate plans for approaching an area, working at the destination and returning. Do not assess the entire raid solely by what you intend to do inside the resort: reaching the building and leaving after the objective also consume time and resources.

For an outside route, choose one destination: the village or the farm. In update 0.14.0.0, BSG added a small cattle farm to Shoreline, occupied by smugglers and Scavs. This is a different scale of objective from the resort’s several buildings: identify your approach, search boundary and return path before looking for loot. If your objective leads into the resort, plan that separately; adding a distant outside stop can increase time spent in the open.

Patch 1.2.0.0 reworked Shoreline environmental audio. Check familiar sound references again after the update. This does not justify assigning an exact enemy position to a sound without visual confirmation. A good first route here is repeatable rather than map-wide.

The Azure Coast health resort is a complex of several buildings; the official Shoreline description also identifies a village, coastline with boating infrastructure, a gas station and a weather station. Use that difference in scale: first decide whether you need the complex itself or an outside route. Several buildings cannot be treated as one room to check quickly while passing through.

Sanitar is another part of the Shoreline profile. When introducing him, BSG explicitly named this location and his medical specialisation. Allow for combat if an objective leads into an enemy-occupied area, without converting the old description of his healing into current health or time-to-kill calculations. His association with the map does not guarantee an encounter in a particular raid.

Interchange: a deliberate shop circuit

Interchange appeals to players who want to learn navigation inside a shopping complex and plan a route around particular loot categories. Begin with one understandable section and its extraction route. A long shop circuit is a weak plan if you do not know when to stop or how to leave with what you collected.

Patch 1.2.0.0 added loot spots at the Emercom camp, Objects #11SR, #14 and #21WS, OLI service areas, Kiba Arms and other locations. It changed the loot templates for OLI, Goshan and IDEA cash registers. Standalone ULTRA stores no longer require register keys; Goshan, IDEA and OLI registers still require them.

That distinction matters more than an old general instruction to bring register keys. Check the specific object. New spots do not make every raid profitable, and guaranteed loot inside a locked container does not guarantee your desired item.

For a learning circuit through the retail area, choose three recognisable stops: RASMUSSEN beside the barrier, ТЕХНО by the bottom of the escalator and TECHLIGHT upstairs. Historical client 0.10.1.1879 frames show these signs; the in-game paper plan also places TECHLIGHT on the upper level. Begin with one storefront, remember its entrance and the approach to the escalator, then add the second level. Inspect accessible shelves and counters while keeping a clear return path instead of attempting the entire complex at once.

Keep the purposes of that circuit separate. The tech shops help you learn one section of the retail area; ULTRA medical and Kiba Arms require a separate access-and-cost decision. If you have already collected what you need or encounter an opponent at the crossing between floors, finish the current loop. Delivering your items matters more than visiting the last planned storefront.

RASMUSSEN in client 0.10.1.1879: the sign and barrier help identify the entrance on a learning circuit.

For concrete shop study, begin by distinguishing ULTRA medical storage from Kiba Arms: BSG has adjusted loot at these points individually rather than applying one rule to the entire complex. ULTRA medical is a distinct route objective; the word medical does not guarantee a rare medical item. Match the category you need to the current state of that destination, its access and the return path.

Killa also belongs in the Interchange profile: the official boss introduction explicitly named this map. Before entering a shop of interest, allow for a more dangerous encounter than routine item searching. This guide does not assign a fixed spawn chance, guaranteed floor or mandatory boss loot.

Reserve: extraction before loot

Choose Reserve after preparing an extraction plan. A location combining surface buildings with underground routes makes it easy to become absorbed in searching and consider the return journey too late. For a first introduction, treat the surface and underground sections as separate learning objectives.

Do not assume every visible extraction works for your character and equipment. Check the conditions of your chosen exit before entering, then prepare an alternative. Practise recognising which level you are on and where the closest connection between levels lies.

For a limited weapon-focused route, choose the southern White Pawn barracks. The native Inventory Check card identifies separate armories there; game frames show a helicopter yard identifying the brick building and barred doors bearing a yellow Оружейная (Armory) sign inside. Prepare access to the selected room, inspect its shelving and cabinets, and retrace the familiar section. This gives the surface visit a concrete learning objective: understand one building and finish the raid while keeping time in reserve for extraction.

Reserve has a concrete basis for this distinction: it is a RosReserv military base, and official fixes separately identify its underground areas. A historical extraction description listed a sewer hatch, an armoured train and a bunker. That list explains the variety of options rather than supplying current activation instructions for every exit: check character, equipment and individual extraction conditions before the raid.

Glukhar is the boss associated with the base; BSG introduced him alongside Reserve. Separate item searching from a decision to take that fight when planning your route: the latter changes risk and ammunition use. A plan to search as many drawers as possible is weaker than checking a chosen area and finishing the raid, even when an old diagram shows many containers.

Streets of Tarkov: dense city navigation and performance testing

Learn Streets of Tarkov a block at a time. Choose several connected entrances, remember how to return to the street, then add a neighbouring area. Having to rediscover your route after every building interferes with both completing the objective and leaving on time.

Patch 1.0.2.0 added loot spots at the school, Rus Post, Klimov mall and Cardinal apartment complex, together with new ammunition spawn points. These provide specific directions to explore without proving equal value in every building or guaranteeing profit.

Test performance before an expensive attempt. Patch 1.0.4.5 optimised Streets objects and geometry, while the developers explicitly linked the result to PC configuration and settings. Do not transfer another player's FPS result to your computer. If controls feel inconsistent, begin with settings and a short test.

Kaban and Kollontay belong in the Streets profile. Kaban’s official introduction associated him with the vehicle repair shop, while Kollontay’s named the Klimov Shopping Mall and MVD academy area. This is useful background for learning districts and understanding dangerous areas, rather than a promise that a boss occupies a former position now. Check current conditions after events and updates, and treat a route through a boss area as a separate objective.

Lighthouse: a route after the rework

An old risk map is particularly dangerous on Lighthouse. In 1.1.5.0, Rogues moved from the water treatment plant to the mountain chalets. The plant no longer has stationary weapons, and all landmines specifically inside the plant were removed. This does not establish that the whole location is mine-free.

The main road gained cover and route options, while underground mountain passages shorten journeys to southern extractions. Loot distribution was reworked, abandoned Rogue gear stashes were added, and the BTR now patrols several route variants. Recheck the entire journey instead of only the formerly dangerous half of the map.

Choose Lighthouse to explore a specific current route or objective. Chalets cannot automatically be treated as a quiet alternative to the plant. Unlocking the map through Tour and progressing through the subsequent Lightkeeper chain are different stages; visiting Lighthouse does not mean unrestricted access to every associated site.

Do not budget the old 20,000-dollar amount from an early Lighthouse unlock route for Tour: in a September balancing change, BSG reduced the cost of that unlock to 8,000 dollars. This changes a specific story payment. It does not remove the separate conditions for subsequent work with Lightkeeper or turn the payment into universal access to every site on the map.

The Lab: a prepared project rather than an improvised visit

When choosing The Lab, separate access expenditure from equipment and room keys. In patch 0.14.9.6 of July 10, 2024, BSG fixed a bug that prevented the TerraGroup Labs access keycard from disappearing after a PvE raid in The Lab. When budgeting for that entry setup, include consumed cards in each attempt’s expenses: this helps compare a series of raids with a familiar location that has no entry charge. Budget a key to an individual room separately rather than treating it as a replacement for the entry card.

Patch 1.0.4.0 increased Raider numbers in The Lab by 20%. That is a change relative to the previous state, not an exact enemy count in every raid. In 1.2.0.0, the developers specifically said this location would have more high-level PMC bots in PvE. PvE therefore cannot be described as an empty, safe version of the map.

For learning, use one route and a predetermined session loss limit. If the objective is steadily rebuilding your budget, compare the actual result against a more familiar location first. High potential value does not remove the cost of mistakes.

What to choose for the next raid

For an initial urban route, consider Ground Zero or a small part of Customs. For navigation and distance, consider Woods. For short combat practice, consider Factory. For a shopping-complex route, use Interchange; for dense city navigation with a performance check, use Streets. Choose Shoreline, Reserve, Lighthouse and The Lab around a studied objective and extraction.

These are authored learning recommendations rather than official difficulty categories. In PvE, account for updated PMC bot activity: patch 1.2.0.0 made them move more actively towards points of interest and task areas. A previously quiet spot does not receive a permanent safety guarantee.

Which map is the most profitable?

The one where your repeatable route produces the best result after losses and expenses. Compare several of your own sessions of equal duration rather than a record backpack or unverified roubles per hour.

Should I learn all ten at once?

No. Choose the map for your next objective and finish a limited route. Add another once you understand how to return from the first, rather than only how to find an interesting building.

Why is there no single S-tier?

Learning, looting and combat have different criteria. Choosing a map for the next raid's objective is more useful than treating one overall order as a guarantee of results.
