How to Level Up Faster in Escape from Tarkov: Tasks and XP
Fast leveling in Escape from Tarkov starts with raids that produce useful progress. A completed task, a retained quest item and an unlocked next step matter more than repeated expensive attempts with nothing to show for them. Plan XP together with survival, preparation time and the tasks you can actually access.
This guide covers the release game and distinguishes permanent PvP/PvE profiles from a Seasonal Character. Older advice about every wipe's starting routine, former task rewards and fixed XP values cannot automatically be applied to all of these branches.
Before your next session, choose one main objective and an alternative you can pursue along the way. Prepare equipment for several attempts and decide which result should trigger your departure. That plan turns limited time into levels more effectively than trying to complete every available task simultaneously.
Start with the correct profile
A Seasonal Character exists independently of PvP Zone and PvE Zone. Its progression and rules differ from a permanent profile. Check character selection before making purchases, planning tasks or comparing your results with someone else's leveling route.
Insurance is disabled in the season. It remains available in permanent PvP/PvE, and patch 1.1.0.0 added an option from Jaeger. This changes the budget for repeated attempts: a comfortable permanent-character loadout may be too expensive for a series of seasonal raids.
Do not spend your evening preparing for someone else's starting state. Check what you personally have unlocked: traders, story progress, tasks and locations. Choose the next achievable step instead of reconstructing an entire order from an old video.
Choosing tasks after the rework
Patch 1.1.0.0 changed side-task distribution. Most are now linked to Trader Loyalty Level and appear in small groups, with further access depending on completing some tasks or reaching the next Loyalty Level. Certain chains still retain their own sequence.
An unavailable task therefore does not always mean you must complete one particular old prerequisite. Check the trader's available work and the conditions for further progression. Important chain rewards are displayed when accepting the first task, so account for those when deciding priorities.

Agree on your squad objective and actions before entering; task assistance depends on each objective's conditions.
Divide your task list into three groups:
Objectives you can complete next raid with equipment already available.
Objectives requiring a purchase, key, additional access or preparation.
Objectives that currently conflict with your playstyle and can wait without stopping all progression.
Choose compatible goals. Retrieving an item and visiting a nearby site work well together when the route remains manageable. Two tasks with conflicting weapon or equipment conditions are better assigned separate loadouts than accidentally fighting under the wrong conditions.
Group assistance still has conditions
Some objectives support group-shared progression and display a special icon in the task interface. A helper does not need to have that task, but must belong to your group and satisfy its conditions, including distance, equipment, status effects and other requirements.
Do not extend this rule to every quest. Some chains remain individual skill tests. Before entering, agree whose objective is being advanced and who will perform each action. Eliminating a suitable enemy does not help if the kill used the wrong equipment or failed another requirement.
For side tasks targeting ordinary Scavs, regular Scavs, Sniper Scavs and Player Scavs count. Bosses, Raiders and Rogues no longer substitute for them after the rework. If a counter does not advance, first check the target category instead of repeating the same mistake.
An XP-focused raid: objective, route and extraction
Before entering, identify your main objective and an accessible route toward it. Prepare an alternative if the target area is occupied. After completing the main objective, move toward extraction when another fight would threaten the result you already secured.
Survival is a practical way to preserve a task attempt and your budget. It does not require passive play throughout the raid. When a task needs combat, choose a location and timing that suit the required target; when it needs an item, do not turn the return journey into an unrelated kill hunt.
Patch 1.2.0.0 added a visual Run-Through indicator: the extraction timer turns white if completing it at that moment would give that status. Check the task's raid-outcome requirements and do not treat the timer merely starting as a guarantee of the desired outcome. Old fixed thresholds from guides are unnecessary here.
Five raid outcomes and their practical meaning
Outcome | What happened | What to check for progression |
|---|---|---|
Survived | You extracted with the survival status. | Whether the required exit, objective and item handover counted. |
Run-Through | You left alive, but the result was not recognised as full survival. | Whether the task specifically requires Survived; do not substitute one for the other. |
Killed in Action (KIA) | Your character died in the raid. | Which objectives retained progress and what needs another attempt after preparing a new kit. |
Missing in Action (MIA) | The raid ended before your extraction completed. | Whether you allowed time for the entire extraction countdown rather than merely reaching its zone. |
Deserter | You abandoned the raid through the menu instead of extracting. | Do not mistake ending the session through the menu for successfully leaving with the item. |
Allow time for the extraction countdown itself. Standing in the extraction zone when the raid ends is insufficient if extraction has not finished. After death or another unsuccessful outcome, examine the particular cause and task conditions; do not assume every counter reset or everything already counted.
When a paid vehicle extraction helps
A vehicle extraction can shorten the return journey if it is available to your character in that raid. Before paying, check the extraction list, vehicle presence, required payment and waiting time. Carry money for this option on a suitable route, but retain an alternative exit: the vehicle may be absent or already used. Paying does not make the approach and wait safe.
Do not apply the price from one old example to every map and profile. For levelling, compare the fare with the risk of losing a completed objective on a longer return route. A paid extraction does not replace a task's raid-status requirement or itself guarantee an XP bonus.
After extraction, check objective counters and item handover before entering another raid. Notice a missing condition now, while you remember your route and equipment, rather than after several identical attempts.
Do not copy an old transit or boss farm unchanged
Patch 1.1.0.0 added XP for story chapters and changed transit multipliers. Patch 1.1.5.0 made the multiplier increase more gradual and reduced XP from certain enemies on Icebreaker and in The Labyrinth. You therefore cannot calculate an older route's returns by retaining the numbers from its original video.
Compare options by XP per real session time. Include preparation, waiting, failed attempts and rebuilding your budget. A difficult route can suit an experienced group while being poor for someone who still loses most loadouts there.
For one session, record the starting time, completed tasks, XP received and the cause of each attempt that achieved nothing. If one location repeatedly blocks progress, change your approach timing, equipment or raid objective. More identical attempts are not the only answer to a recurring problem.
Arena and cooperative play: additional routes
Patch 1.1.0.0 added one-way synchronization of some EFT: Arena progression into PvP Season. It follows the selected branch's rules and the timing of XP earned after the season began. Do not assume that an old Arena history retroactively levels a new Seasonal Character or that every mode synchronizes identically.
In 1.2.0.0, the EXFIL Brothers program added a 5% XP bonus for linked Operators and Candidates raiding together. This is a separate program with participant eligibility and account-linking requirements; inviting any friend to your squad does not itself activate the bonus. The program is unrelated to EFT: Arena.
Do not choose an additional mode solely for an advertised percentage or someone else's evening level count. Compare how consistently you can perform its activities and how much time remains for your main progression.
Operational tasks: daily and weekly planning
Check operational tasks before choosing a map rather than after a raid. For a short session, a useful offer matches your existing route: the same location, an appropriate target and compatible equipment. Assess a weekly task against the attempts remaining and the deadline shown on screen; a large reward alone does not make it quick.
Patch 1.0.4.0 increased XP from PMC operational tasks, simplified their objectives and removed co-op extraction objectives from PMC and Scav operational tasks. The old advice to ignore this whole section because rewards are small is therefore outdated. That does not make every random task worth expensive purchases or abandoning a working route.
For example, suppose you are going to Customs for a main objective. If an available operational task has compatible conditions on that map, include it in the same attempt. If another requires an unfamiliar weapon or a separate visit to a dangerous area, assess its extra cost and completion chance first. This illustrates decision-making rather than a guaranteed set of generated offers.
Patch 1.0.6.0 added task search by name, objective, location and trader. Use it to assemble compatible objectives. Do not replace tasks blindly: inspect the replacement cost, reputation change and new conditions. Exact current daily and weekly unlock levels require a separate mode-specific check; old thresholds are not repeated here.
The Flea Market as a progression goal
Flea Market access helps with equipment preparation and finding items, but does not replace checking task requirements. Buying an item does not automatically make it eligible for handover: the specific objective's conditions remain decisive.
While the market is unavailable, build a replaceable kit from unlocked offers. Once it opens, compare the final purchase price with traders and repair expenses. This prevents a new unlock from slowing progression because the entire budget went into one kit.
Also inspect why the market screen is blocked: character progression, an offer restriction and a technical problem require different solutions. The numerical access threshold must be verified for the selected profile; assuming an old wipe guide still applies is insufficient.
A concrete kit: ammunition and medicine first
Build a weapon together with its ammunition and magazines rather than as an isolated attractive purchase. For example, an official trader-offer change added the M16A2 5.56x45 at Peacekeeper LL1. This is a specific option to inspect in the available assortment, rather than a universal best rifle: compare the entire kit price, suitable ammunition supply and handling at your intended distance.
Do not select a cartridge solely because the calibre matches. Compare its properties against your intended target and check compatibility in the client. If a suitable batch is too expensive for repeated attempts, change the weapon or objective rather than taking an expensive assembly with arbitrarily selected ammunition. Old claims that a particular round defeats every armour at wipe start are not used here.
Check what an armour purchase actually includes. After the 1.1.0.0 assortment rework, Ref primarily offers armour vests and plate carriers without installed plates. A carrier's name does not establish that plates are inside. Before deploying, separately inspect protection components, headset and helmet compatibility, medical supplies and space for the task item.
Patch 1.0.4.5 changed weapon modification mechanics: handguards no longer reduce recoil. An expensive extra part therefore does not necessarily provide the benefit claimed by an old build list. For levelling, a repeatable working kit is more useful than chasing former stat values.
Use the following concrete options to make the choice specific. This is a checklist for matching equipment to the objective, rather than a ranking based on old prices or a promise of availability at trader Loyalty Level 1.
Item or group | When to include it in comparison | What to check before deployment |
|---|---|---|
Mosin 7.62x54R: Infantry or Sniper | When the chosen objective lets you prepare a separate shot at range. This is a bolt-action rifle, so plan a missed shot and the next engagement in advance. | Choose the specific variant, suitable sight and cartridge; practice the follow-up shot. Avoid planning every fight around a promise of one hit. |
PPSh-41 | When the route involves close contact and you can control a short burst. The aim is to complete the task with available equipment, rather than repeat someone else's fire-rate record. | Assemble compatible magazines and enough ammunition. Check your actual magazine's capacity and practice reloading rather than relying on an old description. |
VPO-136 | When you want to compare a civilian AK-family variant with a familiar weapon. A matching magazine shape does not mean every cartridge is compatible. | Do not load .366 TKM instead of suitable ammunition: BSG specifically warned that this cartridge fits a standard AK magazine, but AKM and VPO-136 cannot fire it. Check attachments mount by mount. |
ANA Tactical M1 | As one wearable setup to assess as a whole: protection, carried equipment and replacement cost. | Arrange magazines, healing and required items before buying. Compare the complete configuration with an alternative, rather than declaring one carrier best at every stage. |
WARTECH TV-110 | When comparing plate carriers and assembling equipment for a particular budget. The model name does not replace inspecting installed components. | Check every plate's format and compatibility in inspection, then its installation and condition. One compatible plate does not mean any other plate will fit. |
HighCom Trooper TFO | As a specific alternative when comparing armor. Assess integrated protection and replaceable components separately rather than relying on one old armor-class number. | Check coverage, durability and the complete setup's cost. Do not transfer an old “best class 4 vest” claim to every present configuration. |
MBSS and Mystery Ranch Blackjack 50 | As two named backpacks to compare against your actual route. A large planned haul should not prevent completing the main task. | Try the setup with magazines, healing and room for required finds. Check available space and total load; do not use a number in a name instead of inspecting the inventory. |
MSA Sordin Supreme PRO-X/L and Peltor ComTac 2 | As headset options to compare on a familiar stretch at the same overall volume. | Check helmet compatibility and whether useful sounds remain distinguishable. A more expensive purchase does not guarantee precise enemy coordinates or constant audibility. |
Peltor ComTac IV is another candidate to compare. Before buying, check the exact headset against the helmet and its extra protection: BSG has separately changed Comtac IV compatibility with AirFrame Ears and AirFrame Chops. This does not establish an old price, unlock level or superior hearing distance.
When selecting affordable ammunition, account for actual offer changes: 1.1.0.0 reduced prices including 5.56x45mm FMJ and 7.62x39mm FMJ. Compare such a batch with the entire raid budget, but do not mistake a lower price for improved penetration. Check damage and penetration in the cartridge inspector; BSG also added a display of penetration chances against different armor classes. Establish compatibility with the chosen weapon first, then assess the target and the cost of another attempt.
After assembling the setup, perform a brief check: load the correct cartridge, reload from your actual magazine arrangement, locate the necessary healing and check free space. If a task requires specific equipment, put that first on the checklist. A setup you cannot quickly replace or confidently use can slow progression despite good individual characteristics.
Looting, headshots and healing
Searching and examining items should not become a stationary activity under fire. The official Leagues description explicitly lists XP from eliminations, tasks and examining items, but does not establish a current universal reward for every body interaction or item movement. For efficient looting, make space in advance, choose the categories you need and check the area around a body first.
When practising shooting, work on first-shot accuracy and headshots when you can attempt them without excessive risk. Do not stand still for a bonus whose value comes from an old guide. The exact current XP table for regular kills and headshots has not been confirmed here; the plan does not rely on a promised doubling.
Treat healing as a way to preserve an attempt and prepare the next one efficiently. After combat, move into cover and inspect your character. Patch 1.0.4.0 changed multifunctional medkit priority: after treating bleeding, head and thorax recovery take priority. This specific behaviour does not mean every medical item fixes every condition.
After a raid, compare Therapist's service cost with consuming your own supplies. Patch 1.1.0.0 reduced post-raid healing prices, with a small discount at higher Therapist loyalty. A blanket instruction to always reject the service and always use Grizzly for XP therefore needs renewed cost and XP-rule verification. Do not deliberately injure your character for an unverified scheme.
Audio and map knowledge reduce wasted time
Learn one route as a sequence of landmarks: entry, objective, extraction approach and an alternative. Then repeat it from another spawn. This teaches both the room's position and how to reach it without a lengthy search.
An audio cue can inform a decision to stop, check an angle or change direction, but cannot guarantee another player's exact coordinates. Do not expect to hear an opponent 100% of the time. Patch 1.2.0.0 reworked Shoreline environmental audio; revisit familiar sound references after updates. Choose a headset with a compatible helmet, then compare audibility on a familiar route.
A short-session plan
Confirm your profile, active tasks and current trader conditions.
Prepare a main objective and an alternative on one location without conflicting requirements.
Assemble a repeatable loadout you can replace after a failure.
Hand in completed work immediately after the raid and check newly available tasks.
At the end of the session, choose one cause of wasted time and address it before the next session.
The best leveling plan is one you can repeat. Increase route difficulty after successful extractions instead of measuring steady progress against someone playing with different experience, teammates and equipment access.
