FFXIV Best Gear: How to Build Dawntrail BiS for Every Role
What Counts as BiS in Dawntrail Right Now
BiS (Best in Slot) in Final Fantasy XIV is the set of gear that squeezes the most damage or utility out of your job. Today's sets were built around patch 7.4 and the Arcadion Heavyweight raid in Savage mode. Patches 7.5, 7.51, 7.55 and the final Dawntrail patch 7.56 (early September 2026) have arrived since, but the logic of the build has stayed the same.
A full BiS almost always comes from two sources: Savage raid drops and augmented Bygone Brass tomestone gear. The two groups cover different slots and complement each other, so you cannot finish a set from the raid alone or from tomestones alone.
Data is current as of October 18, 2026. Exact substats in each slot depend on the job and the version of the set, so below are general principles that fit any build.
Where Heavyweight Savage Gear Comes From
The Arcadion Heavyweight Savage raid gives the core of the BiS set. Each of the four fights is tied to its own slots, and part of the loot is bought with books you collect from weekly clears.

In practice that means:
Weapons and the big slots usually come from Savage first: they are the most valuable raid items.
Some slots are easier to fill with augmented tomestone gear, since it does not depend on drop luck.
Weekly limits mean you cannot finish everything in one sitting, so plan the next several weeks from day one.
If your raid group meets irregularly, tomestone gear is your safety net, because it does not rely on random drops.
Stats by Role and Choosing a Set
Critical Hit remains the main stat for most jobs. The rest depends on the role and on the job itself, so use the overall picture first and then check the set made for your specific job.
Role | Usual focus | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
Tanks | Critical Hit, Determination, Direct Hit | Tenacity rarely appears in raid BiS sets |
Healers | Critical Hit, Spell Speed | Direct Hit shows up in aggressive builds |
Melee | Critical Hit, Direct Hit | Skill Speed matters for certain jobs, so check your set |
Physical ranged | Critical Hit, Direct Hit | Skill Speed is only for tuning the GCD |
Casters | Spell Speed, Critical Hit | Direct Hit appears in aggressive sets |
Your role also shapes how you treat gear:
Tanks need to hold the boss and soften incoming damage, but raid sets still lean toward damage, with survival coming from skills and party tools.
Healers now contribute a lot of damage, especially in Savage and Ultimate, so Critical Hit helps both healing and offense.
Melee jobs move constantly and play around positionals, so steady uptime matters more than a single extra stat point.
Physical ranged jobs have the most freedom of movement, and their BiS aims to get the most out of crits.
Casters depend on tight spell windows, and cast speed decides how smooth the rotation feels.
Treat the table as a guide for choosing, not a ready recipe. Sets for different jobs in the same role vary a lot, so open the current set for your job before melding.
Food and Materia
For food, Dawntrail players mostly pick one of two level 100 meals introduced in patch 7.4. Caramel Popcorn boosts Critical Hit and Determination, and most jobs choose it. Popoto Potage gives Critical Hit and Spell Speed, which suits sets where spell speed plays a real part.

Materia goes in after you settle on the gear itself. The order is:
Collect the pieces and check which speed thresholds your job needs.
Meld materia into the stats your set prioritizes.
Count the food: it adds stats and shifts the final values.
Food lasts for a limited time, so eat it before the raid and refresh it during the evening. For practice pulls you can take something cheaper and save the best meal for attempts with real progress. That way your best meals do not go to waste.
Do not meld materia blindly until you are sure about the set: redoing it is expensive.
A Week-by-Week Order for Building the Set
If you are not in a rush, this plan works best:
First, fill slots with augmented tomestone gear to raise your item level quickly.
Then take the weapon and the most valuable slots from Savage, replacing the rest as drops arrive.
Fill the remaining slots last, as drops and currency allow.
A good habit is to write down at the start of each week which slots are done and which still wait for Savage or tomestones. A short list saves you from spending currency on the wrong item and then seeing the better piece drop the next day.
This gets you to the level needed for hard content sooner, without waiting on a particular drop.
Patch 7.55 Relic Weapons and Dancing Mad
Patch 7.55 (around late July 2026) added the final step of the Dawntrail relic weapon, Phantom Weapon Occultum. The finished weapon has item level 795 and new glow effects. For many players this is about looks as much as damage.

Together with patch 7.51 (June 2, 2026) came the seventh Ultimate fight, Dancing Mad. To unlock it you need to clear AAC Heavyweight M4 in Savage and talk to the Wandering Minstrel in Tuliyollal. Entry requires item level 790, and the fight syncs you to 795. Rewards are cosmetic only: Ultimate Diamond weapons, a title and glamour plates.
So gear here is for a confident clear, not for rewards. The sooner you close your key slots, the easier Ultimate attempts get.
Think of the relic weapon as a separate goal for players who want a striking look and are ready for a long collection. If your group cares more about clearing Savage quickly, start with raid gear and return to the relic when it suits you.
Which Path Fits Your Playstyle
The same BiS can be built in different ways. Your choice depends on how much time you can put in each week.
Static players. You have a fixed group and a schedule. Go for Savage and use tomestones for slots that did not drop.
Occasional raiders. Lean on tomestone gear. It is predictable, and it is usually enough for everyday content.
Players with several jobs. Do not try to BiS everything at once. Pick a main job, finish it, and keep the others on augmented tomestones.
That way you avoid spreading yourself thin and get results where they matter most.
What to Check Before Picking a Set
Before swapping gear, check a few things:
Freshness of the set. It should be built for the Heavyweight tier, meaning patch 7.4 level or newer.
Match to your job. Pieces that look alike for different roles carry different stats.
Item source. Savage and augmented tomestones cover different slots, and picking the wrong source can cost you several weeks.
Old recommendations. If a set includes a crafted or Extreme trial piece, it is usually a placeholder from an earlier tier rather than final BiS.
If you lack time for raids, part of the work can go to professionals: ordering a Savage clear or help building the set. You save weeks and can head straight into current content.
