FFXIV Mounts: First Chocobo and Rare Rewards
What Kinds of Mounts Exist and Where to Start
In FFXIV you need a mount from the first hours: Eorzea is big, and walking to the next zone takes a while. The second reason is collecting. The game has hundreds of mounts, and each has its own route: some come from the story, some drop from bosses, some are sold for currency, and a few are available only in the store or during an event.
They fall into four rough groups: story and quest mounts, mounts earned in activities (trials, raids, hunts, PvP, Gold Saucer), mounts bought with in-game currency, and time-limited ones. The rarer the reward, the more likely it sits behind a repeatable grind, so it helps to know what you are collecting and how long it will take.
The order below: your first chocobo, currency rarities, collection chains, raid rewards, smaller activities, paid and seasonal mounts, and the new additions from patches 7.55 and 7.56. Data is current as of 10/18/2026.
Your First Chocobo: From Level 20 to the Whistle
Your very first mount unlocks at level 20 through the Main Scenario Quest (MSQ). It is your Grand Company chocobo, and the chain works the same way for all three companies.

Pick a company. At level 20 the story has you pick a Grand Company: Twin Adder, Maelstrom or Immortal Flames. Your choice sets the rest of the chain.
Join. The next quest depends on the company: Wood's Will Be Done (Twin Adder), Till Sea Swallows All (Maelstrom) or For Coin and Country (Immortal Flames). Afterward you are a member and earn company seals.
The chocobo quest. The next quest is My Little Chocobo.
Chocobo Issuance. The company quartermaster sells it for 200 company seals.
Collect and name it. Take the Issuance to the Chocobokeep, receive your bird and give it a name. Any name works within the length limit.
The whistle. One more conversation with the Chocobokeep completes the quest and gives you the Chocobo Whistle.
Summon. Open the mount menu, right-click the chocobo icon and choose Summon. You can place the icon on a hotbar or cross hotbar to mount with one press.
The first chocobo costs 200 company seals, which you collect through ordinary play. Everything else in this guide takes noticeably more time.
Currency Mounts: Ty'aitya, Wivre and Air-wheeler A9
Several of the most eye-catching mounts are bought with currency, and the main one is Bicolor Gemstone Vouchers. The vendor in Mor Dhona, Edelina, trades them for mounts, but each voucher costs 100 Bicolor Gemstones, so the totals run into tens of thousands of gems.

Ty'aitya. You need 500 Turali Bicolor Gemstone Vouchers, roughly 50,000 gems. Only vouchers bought in Tuliyollal count. According to player reports, the vendors require rank 4 in all six Dawntrail zones.
Wivre. You need 500 Endwalker-era Bicolor Gemstone Vouchers, also about 50,000 gems. Gadfrid in Old Sharlayan sells the vouchers, and they also show up on the Market Board.
Air-wheeler A9. Neon in Solution Nine sells it for 7,500,000 gil. No vouchers, but a serious sum.
The takeaway is simple: these mounts do not come in one evening. If Ty'aitya is the goal, build up gems ahead of time alongside other activities, and finish the Dawntrail zone ranks before the total is ready.
Collection Mounts: Kirin, Landerwaffe and Other Chains
The most prestigious trial rewards do not drop from bosses. A quest unlocks them once you own an entire set. First you collect every mount in the series, and only then does the final reward arrive.

Reward | What to collect | How to unlock |
|---|---|---|
Kirin | Six A Realm Reborn Extreme mounts: Aithon, Gullfaxi, Xanthos, Enbarr, Markab, Boreas | Quest A Legend for a Legend from Urianger in the Waking Sands |
Landerwaffe | All seven Gwiber: Fae, Innocent, Gwiber of Light, Shadow, Ruby, Emerald, Diamond | Quest The Dragon Made from Warmachina Fanatic in The Lochs, near the Porta Praetoria aetheryte |
Apocryphal Bahamut | All Endwalker Lynx mounts | Quest after completing the set |
Firebird | The full Lanner set | Quest after completing the set |
Kamuy of the Nine Tails | The full Kamuy set | Quest after completing the set |
Kirin needs exactly the six Extreme mounts listed. Nightmare is not part of the list.
The Lynx names are easy to mix up: Lynx of Divine Light drops in The Minstrel's Ballad: Hydaelyn's Call, and Lynx of Eternal Darkness in The Minstrel's Ballad: Zodiark's Fall. Bluefeather Lynx comes from Endsinger's Aria.
Lynx have a fallback: if the drop will not come, 99 Umbral or Astral Totems can be traded to Nesvaaz in Radz-at-Han. Players report this option does not work in every case, so check the vendor in game.
Raids, Savage and Variant Dungeons
Raid mounts come in two kinds: those handed out for a clear, and those that drop as rare loot. The first kind covers the Savage tier rewards. One model per tier: Monowheel S1 for AAC Light-heavyweight M4 (Savage), Air-wheeler C9 for AAC Cruiserweight M4 (Savage) and Lowrider T1RANT for AAC Heavyweight M4 (Savage).
The same AAC Heavyweight M4 (Savage) clear opens access to Dancing Mad Ultimate, which arrived on June 2, 2026 with patch 7.51. Its rewards include cosmetic items.
If Savage is out of reach for now, there are calmer options:
Older Savage raids. Alte Roite (Deltascape 4.0), Air Force (Sigmascape 4.0), Model O (Alphascape 4.0), Ramuh and Eden from Eden's Savage.
Variant and Criterion. Rare drops from the Another modes and a coin trade with a vendor: Sil'dihn Throne, Shishioji, Quaqua, Genie of the Lamp.
Record collecting. Silkie, Burabura Chochin and Spectral Statice unlock by completing all records in the matching dungeons.
Dawntrail Extreme trials. Wings of Nihility drops in The Unmaking (Extreme), Wings of Mist in Hell on Rails (Extreme).
Hunts, Beast Tribes, PvP and Gold Saucer
These activities suit players who skip raids but are happy to log in regularly. Rewards here usually come through points, ranks or currency.
Hunts. Ullr is tied to the Dawnbright Hunter achievement: you slay A-rank and S-rank Elite Marks in Dawntrail zones. Check the exact kill counts before you start.
Beast tribes. You need a specific reputation rank and the tribe's own currency. For example, Vurgar the Loyal is bought with Yok Huy Wards from Rarkorgor after rank 7 with the Yok Huy.
PvP. Series mounts come from reaching level 25 in a PvP series. The latest example is Rocket Punch in Series 12.
Gold Saucer. Fenrir, Blackjack, Adamantoise, Archon Throne and others sell for MGP, and the prices are high.
Crafting and gathering. Cosmic Exploration sells mounts for Cosmocredits, and Island Sanctuary for Seafarer's Cowries, where the sanctuary rank gates some purchases.
Paid and Seasonal Mounts
Some mounts cannot be earned in the game at all; the store or an event hands them out. If you aim for a full collection, count them in from the start.
Collector's Editions. Each expansion brings its own: Fat Chocobo and Coeurl for A Realm Reborn, Griffin for Heavensward, Syldra for Stormblood, Grani for Shadowbringers, Arion for Endwalker. The Dawntrail Ark is available only through a Collector's or Digital Collector's Edition code. It is a replica of the FFIX eidolon that transforms into a mech.
Online Store. Dozens of mounts are sold for money, including Hovering Hot Pot, Shadow Wolf, Garlond GL-IS and Megashiba.
Recruit a Friend. Campaign rewards are traded for Gold Chocobo Feathers at the Calamity Salvager: they include Amber Draught Chocobo, Managarm and Twintania.
Events. Inflatable Mograft was a free one-per-character reward in the Moonfire Faire 2026. The quest Earning Your Water Wings was taken from Mayaru Moyaru in Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks at level 30. The event ran from August 12 to August 26, 2026, and it is over.
Past events and collaborations. Starlight Steed (the Reindeer Fame quest in 2022), Ambulario (All Saints' Wake), Regalia Type-G (the FFXV collaboration), and prizes for top placements in The Feast PvP.
Seasonal events sometimes add new mounts, so keep an eye on patch announcements.
New Mounts from Patches 7.55 and 7.56
If you are coming back after a break, check the recent additions: patches 7.55 and 7.56 brought several new rides at once.

Patch 7.55. Duck-billed Porter and Colibri Callado from the Occult Crescent (North Horn), Night Stallion for a Hildibrand quest, and Alsvid as a Twitch Support-a-Streamer reward.
Patch 7.56. Hydra (the A Beast in the Hand V achievement, bought from the Kornago Merchant in Central Shroud), Rocket Punch (PvP Series 12, level 25), Cu Sith and Tourmaline Golem (Beastmaster, Crucible of the Unbroken, level 30), and Uolon (a Moogle event).
Alsvid and Uolon are tied to events, so their availability can change. The rest are earned in the regular way.
How to Start Your Collection
With dozens of mounts on the list, it makes sense to go from easy to hard. First finish the chocobo and the free story and event rewards, then start building a long-term currency: Bicolor Gemstones and MGP grow on their own with regular play.
For the rest, pick a route that fits your style. If you like co-op, take raids and Variant dungeons. If you prefer solo play, go for hunts, crafting or the island. Do not put PvP off: the reward is tied to the current series.
Mark the limited-time rewards separately. If a mount is tied to an event, check the dates in the announcement and do not put it off. Long chains such as Kirin and Landerwaffe are best stretched over weeks, collecting one mount at a time.
