Fortnite OG: A Historical First-Season Guide
Fortnite OG brought back an early map and classic items while retaining some modern conveniences. That matters tactically: a familiar location does not mean abandoning sprinting, sliding or Reboot Van assistance. The mode recreates a selected period rather than every limitation of the old client.
This guide covers the historical Fortnite OG Chapter 1 - Season 1 launch, from December 6, 2024 until January 31, 2025 at 2 AM ET. That deadline concerned the first season and its pass. OG itself was announced as an ongoing experience that would move through subsequent seasons.
Use this material to understand the opening rules, old footage and OG’s structure. It does not present December 2024 loot as the current selection or promise that its pass can still be completed.
What was available at launch?
Solos, Squads and Zero Build were announced immediately. Ranked OG was still described as an upcoming addition in the launch post. That historical coming-soon statement is not a current competition calendar.
When selecting OG in the client, check the mode name and the season on its card. Distinguish the separate OG experience from main Battle Royale, temporary nostalgia events and similarly named developer-made islands. Agree on the building variant before matchmaking with friends.
A classic map with modern traversal
The opening map recreated the early 2017 Battle Royale island. The official map shows Retail Row, Dusty Depot, Loot Lake, Pleasant Park, Lonely Lodge and Moisty Mire. Familiar names aid navigation, but a landing plan still depends on the bus route and nearby players.

December 2024 launch map. Tilted Towers belongs to the following season.
Do not add Tilted Towers to the Season 1 launch map. The official January 31, 2025 announcement for the next season separately introduced the return of Tilted Towers and Shifty Shafts. A location list mixing seasons produces an incorrect route plan.
Landmark | What to assess before landing |
|---|---|
Retail Row / Pleasant Park | An accessible building, neighboring landings and a safe exit |
Dusty Depot | Cover after the first pickup and firing lines between structures |
Loot Lake | A route through water and an exit from exposed sightlines |
Lonely Lodge / Moisty Mire | Distance to safety and when to begin moving |
These are editorial route questions, not guarantees of quiet landings or exact chest counts. The edge is not always safer: delaying movement can make an exposed crossing more costly than a short early engagement.
Which modern conveniences remained?
Sprinting, sliding, mantling, door bashing and moving while healing were available at launch. Building used the Battle Royale mechanics current at that launch. Do not assume opponents had to move and build under 2017 limitations.
Reboot Vans and sniper-scope glare were also present. Maximum building resources were 999, and Double Pump was enabled for shotguns with a for-now qualification. Zero Build added Ziplines and Ascenders for hard-to-reach locations. None of those historical features proves a rule remained unchanged in later seasons.
Before leaving a room, assess more than the doorway: consider an exit through your own build or mantling a ledge. Choose the route and cover before healing; being able to move does not make an exposed crossing safe.
The full announced launch weapon selection
The announcement listed the following as part of the initial selection, with additional items planned to return during the season. This is the launch list rather than a catalog of every rarity and numerical stat.
Group | Names | Loadout decision |
|---|---|---|
Assault rifles | Assault Rifle; Burst Assault Rifle; Scoped Assault Rifle | Choose a comfortable firing approach for your main distance |
Shotguns | Pump Shotgun; Tactical Shotgun | Prepare an answer to close contact |
Compact weapons | Pistol; Revolver; Submachine Gun; Tactical Machine Gun | Use available opening loot and reassess its later role |
Sniper rifles | Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle; Semi-Auto Sniper Rifle | Control a distant line from a suitable position |
Explosives | Grenade Launcher; Rocket Launcher | Affect cover and space |
Tactical Machine Gun follows the wording of the launch announcement. Do not substitute an item from another mode into the historical list or import damage tables from a later version.
Begin with something that lets you defend yourself, then cover the opposite distance. Two weapons with overlapping jobs are not always more useful than recovery or a safe crossing tool. Before a sniper shot, assess who can see your position and where to move afterward.
Traps also worked in Zero Build
The launch list included Damage Trap, Ceiling Zapper and Wall Dynamo. Traps were explicitly allowed in Zero Build, with the announcement suggesting existing buildings. No building did not mean no danger when entering a room.
Check approaches and ceilings before chasing floor loot. Use your own trap to control an expected route while preserving an exit. Not every surface suits every trap: assess the mounting surface and available placement.
Using Double Pump without losing loadout structure
Double Pump was enabled at launch. The practical purpose was sequential use of two shotguns in a close engagement. The second shotgun still occupied a slot, and approaching safely remained your responsibility. Do not copy that kit if most of your fights occur at distance.
When reviewing an old match, examine switching timing, the hit and the retreat. One spectacular sequence does not establish ordinary reliability. Understanding the conditions of successful contact is more useful than promising the same result for every player.
The first season’s OG Pass
The launch pass included 45 tiers of retro-themed rewards. Its Outfits were Renegade Rebel, Aerial Assault Bomber and Skull Commander, each with an unlockable alternate style. XP earned across Fortnite experiences could advance the pass.

Historical first OG Pass rewards; progression ended January 31, 2025.
The completion deadline was January 31, 2025 at 2 AM ET. That is a historical progression deadline rather than an offer to purchase the pass now. Do not treat every retro-themed item as an original 2017 Outfit: these rewards reinterpreted classic designs.
For any subsequent pass, separately inspect its reward track, price, access conditions and deadline. The OG name does not itself guarantee permanent cosmetic exclusivity. This guide assigns no unverified alternate-style names or promises that an item can never return.
OG Cups and a practical introduction
The announced opening OG Cups were open, unprized events using the OG selection without competitive loot adjustments. That describes the announcement rather than every future OG tournament. Another event’s timing, access and rewards require its own rules.
Establish the season and mode variant relevant to your plan or recording.
Choose a route from landing to first cover and the following crossing.
Collect working weapons and recovery, then improve the kit by role.
In building modes, assess materials; in Zero Build, assess Ziplines, Ascenders and natural cover.
Check entrances for traps and distant sightlines for sniper glare.
Review one early engagement and one rotation afterward: where did a decision leave you without a safe answer?
OG paired a recognizable island with more convenient controls. The useful skill is separating returning content from retained modern mechanics and checking which season a piece of advice actually describes.
For leaving your own box, practise a roof edit beforehand and choose a direction that does not expose you to a nearby opponent. When trying Double Pump, practise firing the first pump shotgun, switching to the second and firing again while checking weapon readiness; verify the technique separately before applying it in another mode.
