Fortnite Runners Sprites: Extraction, Dust and Mastery

Sprites in Fortnite: Runners connected power in the current fight with a collection for later matches. Finding a companion was not enough: it needed to be extracted, or another player could take the find. This guide covers the historical Chapter 7 Season 3 foundation and v41.00 launch rules rather than presenting the old roster as the current Battle Royale list.

The central decision was whether to keep taking risks or secure the find. A strong ability helped in combat but did not guarantee the Sprite would reach the collection. The route to an Extraction Site, remaining health and other teams' positions were part of the same task as shooting and searching containers.

The system changed after Runners. The official August 20, 2026 Override announcement introduced a new Battle Royale Sprite generation and preserved Season 3 collections in Sprite Garden. Read an older companion description alongside the season and mode in which it operated.

Sprite, Collection and Sprite Dust meant different things

An equipped Sprite provided its own Sprite Power. Successful extraction added it to the Collection for future matches. Sprite Dust was a separate currency: Runners launch rules used it to summon an already extracted companion and to upgrade Sprite powers and loot.

These three concepts are easy to confuse. A companion found in a match, an entry in the collection and your available Dust were not one progress bar. Before another attempt, players needed to know what was saved, which Sprite was selected and whether they had the resources for the intended action.

Sprite Dust Services: choosing what to buy

An Extraction Site had a service terminal with a separate menu. Its actions included a weapon rarity upgrade and an XP option: Dust was not only for bringing a companion back from the collection. To purchase experience, open the services and select the XP icon, then check the offer and price before confirming. Do not confuse it with the weapon-upgrade arrow: these are different actions in the same menu.

Separate the budget for your next attempt from an optional purchase now. If banking a rare companion is the main goal, secure extraction first and retain resources for the summon or Gizmo you plan to use. Consider the XP purchase after that. Terminal experience and leveling the equipped Sprite through combat actions are different parts of the plan; do not treat every XP label as a promise of instant Mastery.

Extracting through an Extraction Site

  1. Find a Sprite and assess its value to your collection or current goal.

  2. Check the Storm and choose a reachable Extraction Site, comparing the route with cover and enemy positions.

  3. Reach the site and defend the process while the timer runs. Arrival alone does not mean the Sprite is banked.

  4. Confirm extraction finished before continuing a risky route.

  5. In a later match, check the Collection summon option instead of assuming the find automatically returned with you.

If a player was eliminated before banking, the Sprite stayed on the battlefield. A rare find therefore justified reconsidering the plan: stop looking for another fight and decide how to deliver it to the collection. This was not an instruction to avoid every fight, but a comparison between the find's value and the remaining risk.

Coordinate extraction timing with teammates. If one player begins while everyone else leaves for the next objective, they defend the valuable find alone. Call the next shared step in advance: inspect the approach, cover the dangerous angle and then activate the process.

Victory Royale: banking the equipped Sprite

Winning the match was another way to bank the equipped companion. The Victory Royale screen displayed Sprite Extracted: the active Sprite was extracted with the winning result. If you had already reached the final fight with the companion you wanted, you could concentrate on winning rather than risk returning to a distant Extraction Site.

This plan makes sense when you have a realistic chance of winning. For a rare find in the middle of a match, safe extraction remains a goal of its own: a potential win has not yet banked the Sprite. After the final fight, check extraction in the interface and collection before treating the objective as complete.

Portable Extractor and other Gizmos

The Portable Extractor could extract an equipped Sprite from anywhere on the Island. That offered an alternative for a valuable find when the route to a normal site was dangerous. First confirm the intended companion is equipped, then perform the action from the calmest available position.

Launch notes announced Lucky Locator for later in the season: it would locate a buried Chest containing a Sprite missing from the collection. Extraction Site Booster was also planned for later and called a special Extraction Crate to boost extracted Sprites. These features should not be attributed to the first day of Runners without considering their release timing.

Gizmos were described as seasonal consumables with an inventory that persisted throughout the season and expired when it ended. They could not be freely traded like ordinary loot. Bonus Goals, Sprite Dust exchanges and Mastery progression were listed as acquisition routes. This temporary inventory differed from the saved collection.

The ten companions listed in the launch notes

The following table covers the starting roster named by Epic in v41.00. It is not a count of every Sprite subsequently added during the season or a list of variants in current Override.

Punk

Zero Point

Mythic

At maximum level, Punk can support repeated firing without consuming the ammunition reserve. You still need to reload: this lets you continue fighting with a retained reserve rather than fire continuously from one magazine. Firework Flare Gun is an illustrative use, letting you repeat shots and reloads while retaining ammunition. When choosing it, consider whether you can reach maximum level and whether that prolonged weapon use helps your plan.

A later example: Burnt Peanut

Keep the ten launch names separate from later additions. The Runners Collection included the Mythic Burnt Peanut: eliminating players gave a chance for extra loot, sometimes Mythic. That differs from Earth's additional items from chests. This helper suits looting after a fight you already planned, but does not guarantee a particular weapon or justify every risk for another elimination.

Choose a companion around how you play

Begin with the problem. If recovery after trades is difficult, consider an effect whose condition you regularly fulfill. If repositioning is the problem, determine whether the ability helps you survive the transition. For collection progress, evaluate more than combat strength: consider whether the find can be safely extracted.

Ghost required reloading, Water required being in water, and Duck required an Emote or Jam. Those conditions created different safe activation moments. Do not begin an action for its ability in the open when an enemy is ready to shoot. A prepared position often matters more than the rarest companion.

In a squad, compare roles: who benefits from recovery, who takes the first risk and who retains the ability to cover the exit. That is more useful than everyone choosing one option solely because it tops another person's subjective tier list.

Levels, Mastery and preserving progress

Launch notes identified three progression categories: exploration through finding and opening Chests, knocking and eliminating opponents, and extracting Sprites. Reaching maximum level and extracting the Sprite granted Mastery. Epic explicitly suggested working across several runs rather than expecting maximum level in a single match.

Targeted progression depends on which Sprite is equipped rather than merely present in the inventory. The Sprite Mastery Rewards screen links the equipped companion’s growth to eliminating players, opening containers and extracting Sprites. Before a sequence of those actions, activate the companion whose power or Mastery you want to develop; treat spare companions separately as extraction candidates. Do not plan around the assumption that occupying several inventory slots automatically levels every carried Sprite at once.

Sprite Mastery Rewards interface describing equipped Sprite progression and mastery at level 5

Historical Runners interface: actions level the equipped companion; extraction at maximum level 5 preserves Mastery.

Mastery and a retained level are different things. Epic separately explains that a mastered Sprite returning to level 1 after being lost in the previous match, either through elimination or because you dropped it, is intended behavior. Mastery remains permanent; the crown above a Sprite in the collection marks mastery rather than a retained level. The crown therefore does not replace the decision to extract safely a Sprite you want to keep for the next run.

Dream was an important exception to the usual plan for preserving a level. In Runners, reaching maximum level 5 made it automatically burst into Legendary loot and leave the match: completing its power triggered extraction itself. Dream started the next match at level 1, but its achieved Mastery status remained permanent. That reset therefore did not mean mastery had been lost. With this companion, plan when to receive the loot and how to continue fighting safely without it rather than expecting to carry its maximum level into the next run.

A practice run therefore benefited from one measurable goal: completing a safe extraction, improving a particular power or mastering a familiar companion. Chasing a rare variant, an aggressive win and maximum level simultaneously was harder, because each objective changed the acceptable risk.

Sprite Pod and The Guardian both involved displaying a collection, but they were not the same item. The Runners Pass announcement described The Guardian as a customizable Sprite-piloted Outfit. v41.00 notes scheduled the display of mastered Sprites in Sprite Pod for the following update. Not every cosmetic option should be treated as an automatic reward for merely picking up a companion.

Five variants: an extra bonus and release timing

A variant added to the helper's base role. Choose an ability trigger that suits you first, then a bonus for loot, Dust, or movement. Names in an early table do not mean every variant was available at launch.

Variant

Confirmed bonus

Gold

The Gold Fire card states bonus XP from eliminations

Gummy

The June 11 notes described 10% extra Sprite Dust on extraction

Galaxy

The June 27 announcement stated 30% more ammunition when looting

Holofoil

From July 9, increased the chance of finding Sprite variants including Gold, Gummy, Galaxy, and Holofoil

Gem

The announcement for August 6 stated an added effect: 30% less fall damage

Holofoil's variant finding suits a collection route, while Gummy's Dust bonus suits banking loot. Gem reduces fall damage rather than removing it: a safe descent remains part of your route. Dated values in the table describe the respective announcements rather than unchanging rules for every later season.

What changed after Runners?

Override brought a new Sprite generation, while Runners companions were preserved in Sprite Garden. That mode supports interacting with the collection, visiting friends' gardens and displaying finds. A saved collectible should not automatically be treated as an available combat power in a new season.

Ranked compatibility also changed. Override notes initially described Sprites with their powers disabled, while an August 28 update reported their removal from Ranked Battle Royale during an evaluation. An older normal-BR recording therefore does not prove the same companion is available in Ranked.

A plan for one careful run

  1. Choose the companion or collection milestone you are pursuing.

  2. Prepare a functional regular inventory and an extraction route.

  3. After finding it, reassess the risk: continue looting or bank the result.

  4. During the timer, watch approaches and remain connected with teammates.

  5. After the match, confirm what was saved before planning the next attempt.

A run's value depended on what you preserved and mastered. An impressive fight followed by losing the desired Sprite could advance the collection less than a quiet extraction without further encounters.
