Genshin Impact Hydroculus Routes: Fontaine and Missing Collectibles
Fontaine contains 271 Hydroculi. The difficult part is not simply the size of the region: one marker can sit on a cliff, another underwater and another inside a separate map. Walking around the shoreline does not replace checking the underwater layer.
A reliable collection plan divides the region into manageable routes and records every pickup immediately. Start with accessible land, explore nearby water next, then return to locations blocked by quests or puzzles. This reduces repeated journeys between different levels of the map.
This guide provides regional collection routes and ways to find missing Hydroculi, including the Sea of Bygone Eras. It is a route-planning companion rather than a coordinate list for all 271 collectibles. Adapt the order to your unlocked waypoints and quest progress.
Prepare the map before travelling
Open the Teyvat Interactive Map through HoYoLAB and select the Hydroculus filter. Add waypoints for the area you are currently exploring. The closest waypoint in a straight line is not always the best starting point: a higher one or a waypoint beside a cave entrance may provide a much simpler approach.
The main map contains 225 Hydroculus markers, while the separate Sea of Bygone Eras map contains another 46. Together these make 271. If an interface shows a smaller number, check the selected map before assuming that collectibles are missing.
Stage | Search targets | Suggested approach |
|---|---|---|
Belleau and Beryl | Shorelines, cliffs and open water | Clear high ground before descending to the coast |
Court of Fontaine and surroundings | Elevated structures and underwater areas | Separate the city and water routes |
Northern Fontaine | Research Institute, Liffey and caves | Start underground routes at their entrances |
Erinnyes Forest and Morte | Lakes, ruins and multiple levels | Check the surface and depths separately |
Nostoi and Sea of Bygone Eras | Petrichor and the separate map | Track both areas independently |
Land routes: approach from above
Belleau and Beryl
Choose a Statue of The Seven or a high waypoint, check accessible cliffs and then descend towards the shore. For a Hydroculus hanging over an edge, gliding from above is usually more convenient than trying to climb directly underneath it. Treat a distant island as a separate destination rather than interrupting a coastal circuit with repeated swims.
After clearing the land section, move to the water in that same area. Land and underwater markers may almost overlap on a flat map while requiring completely different approaches. Keeping them in separate passes makes it easier to identify what remains.
Court of Fontaine
Reserve one pass for the city and elevated structures around it. Only mark a Hydroculus as collected after the pickup actually registers. Reaching its position on the map is not enough. If it is suspended high above the ground, look for a higher access point or a traversal mechanism instead of repeatedly jumping from insufficient height.
Then explore the surrounding water. Clearing a compact section of water systematically is easier to track than swimming across the entire region whenever a new minimap star appears.
Underwater areas and caves
Underwater, check elevation as carefully as horizontal direction. Swim above and below a marker and inspect ceilings, ledges and passages into neighbouring spaces. If a solid wall separates you from the collectible, look for an entrance. A marker behind a wall does not establish that the wall can be broken.
For Liffey and the Fontaine Research Institute areas, record cave entrances separately. A note such as “southern entrance, lower level” is more useful than an unexplained surface pin. Put a locked passage on a return list with the reason it is blocked, so that you can revisit it after progressing the relevant quest.
Use the same layer-by-layer method in Erinnyes Forest and Morte. Quest progression can change access or make an earlier approach inconvenient. If the landscape does not match the route you expected, check your own stage of the area's quests before searching the same position again.

A Hydroculus in Annapausis: account for elevation and quest-related access.
Two locations where access matters
In Annapausis, part of the collection is tied to progress through Ann of the Narzissenkreuz. When a marker leads into an inaccessible section, check the area's quest log first. Trying to climb around a quest-controlled passage from the outside is unlikely to solve the access problem.
Another example is the Hydroculus behind the window near the Legatus Golem in the Petrichor area. Defeating the boss is not required for this particular collectible. Separate reaching the item from the nearby encounter, especially when your party is prepared for exploration rather than that opponent.

The Hydroculus behind the window near the Legatus Golem does not require defeating the boss.
Check the Sea of Bygone Eras separately
The Sea of Bygone Eras uses its own map, making it an easy omission after a thorough sweep of Fontaine's main territory. Petrichor provides the initial staging point. A nearby waypoint automatically unlocks after Song of the Dragon and Freedom, but having that waypoint does not mean you have explored all connected underground areas.
Visit this section after opening the necessary paths, and keep its collection record separate. If Hydroculi are still missing while the main map looks complete, review this area before repeating every shoreline route you have already finished.
Finding the final Hydroculi
The Hydroculus Resonance Stone narrows the search area. It is a Fontaine reputation reward: after receiving its instructions, learn them and check the crafting recipe. The stone identifies an area, not a navigable path through walls and elevation changes.
A successful search has a two-minute cooldown. After the cooldown, the stone can abandon its current target and mark another one if more than one eligible Oculus remains in the region. However, checking the existing search area first is often more productive: review high ground, water and nearby cave entrances.
Do not confuse the stone with the Hydro Treasure Compass. These tools serve different purposes; a Hydroculus requires the Oculus-search tool. Whenever you collect an item during another activity, update your own record immediately so that your next route starts from an accurate list.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the map show 225 instead of 271 Hydroculi?
That is the main map's marker count. The separate Sea of Bygone Eras map contains another 46, so both areas must be checked.
What if the minimap star appears but I cannot see the item?
Check elevation, underwater or underground layers and nearby entrances. Matching the map position does not mean you are on the correct level.
Must I defeat every boss beside a Hydroculus?
No. For example, defeating the Legatus Golem is not required for the Hydroculus behind the nearby window.
Can I change the Resonance Stone target?
Yes, after its cooldown when another eligible target exists. Changing the marker does not unlock quest-controlled passages.
