Trash: Ol’ Waxbeard’s Crew

Menial Laborers:
These mobs apply a stacking buff with their melee attacks called Crude Weapons. Tanks should monitor this closely, using defensive cooldowns or cleanses for bleeds as necessary.

Rank Overseer:
Immune to crowd control. Avoid its Wild Wallop AoE which damages and knocks back enemies. Overpowering Roar buffs nearby mobs and increases damage taken, so prepare for spikes in incoming damage.

Royal Wicklighter:
Applies Flashpoint, a Magic damage-over-time effect on random players—dispels recommended. Also casts Wicklighter Bolt at random targets; make sure to interrupt this.

Pack Mole:
Targets the tank with Nasty Nibble, which stacks Disease debuffs. Have disease cleanses or tank cooldowns ready.

Lowly Moleherd:
Kicks off Mole Frenzy that enrages nearby Pack Moles—be sure to interrupt. Throws rocks at random players, so expect burst damage. Enrages with Panicked! at 50% health; soothe if possible.

Ol’ Waxbeard Boss Fight

Throughout this fight, the boss summons Menial Laborers who share the Crude Weapons bleed debuff. Tanks should pick them up promptly, but watch out for the boss’s Luring Candleflame, which puts a DoT on a random target causing laborers to fixate on that player. Use knockbacks, slows, and stuns to keep laborers from overwhelming that target.

Minecarts travel along the tracks intermittently, causing High Speed Collision—heavy physical damage that kills laborers on impact. Avoid these carts while using crowd control to manage the adds on the tracks.

The boss also uses Reckless Charge, targeting ranged players and dashing toward them, damaging players but killing laborers hit. This is followed by Cave-In circles that must be avoided. It's best to bait this charge with a mobile ranged player who can avoid damage after being targeted. Crowd control can help funnel laborers into the charge for quick kills.

Underhanded Track-tics spawns dynamite carts on the tracks which must be destroyed within 20 seconds to avoid fire damage and a subsequent DoT. Tanks should pull the boss near these carts to maximize cleave damage.

Rock Buster hits tanks and applies a 25% physical damage increase debuff lasting 6 seconds, increasing threat from laborers during this window.

Blazikon Boss Fight

This boss fight revolves around eight candles spread around the room, which interact with the boss’s mechanics — sometimes you want them lit, other times extinguished.

The boss is stationary, so tanks must stay in melee to avoid triggering Blazing Storms, which hits the whole party and damages melee players.

Shortly after engaging, the boss casts Dousing Breath, dealing a large nature damage hit and extinguishing all candles. Use defensive cooldowns here.

This is followed by Wicklighter Barrage targeting three non-tank players, creating 6-yard AoEs under them that deal fire damage every second for six seconds and ignite candles hit.

When the boss reaches full energy, it uses Enkindling Inferno, a cone attack targeting extinguished candles. Avoid standing in the cone as it applies stacking fire DoTs for each candle ignited.

Afterward, with all candles lit, the boss casts Extinguishing Gust, sending tornadoes at four non-tank players. Tornadoes deal nature damage and extinguish candles, so players targeted should back away before the attack to dodge.

You want to aim tornadoes to hit some candles but not all, as the following Incite Flames fills areas around lit candles with fire, creating deadly zones. Since Incite Flames is followed by another Enkindling Inferno, clearing one or two adjacent candles helps create safer spaces without stacking too many DoTs.

This cycle then repeats.

The Candle King Boss Fight

The fight’s main mechanic revolves around wax statues created by Eerie Molds. These statues spawn near players and pulse fire damage every 2 seconds, so clearing them quickly is essential to reduce group damage. Avoid getting too close to the statues because being within 2 yards stuns you with Cursed Wax.

You can remove these statues in two ways:

  1. Darkflame Pickaxe:
A line attack aimed at a random player dealing heavy shadow damage and knockback to the first target hit. If it hits a wax statue, it destroys it instead of dealing damage. Players targeted should position statues between themselves and the boss to maximize clearing while avoiding friendly fire.

  2. Throw Darkflame:
Targets three random players and creates a 5-yard AoE after a delay, applying a healing absorb. Wax statues caught in this AoE melt into puddles for 45 seconds, stopping their pulsing damage. Use these AoEs to clear statues remaining after Darkflame Pickaxe hits.

Additional Mechanics

The boss also casts Paranoid Mind, an interruptible ability that fears the entire group if not stopped. Everyone should watch for this cast to avoid panic and group disruption.

For positioning, it’s best to keep your group relatively close to cluster the wax statues, making them easier to clear quickly. Once wax puddles are created, moving together and staying near puddles maximizes safe space.

Minecart Escort Event

After defeating The Candle King, players must escort a minecart through darkness back to the dungeon’s start where the final boss awaits. The cart moves only when a player is nearby and the cart has heat, which slowly decays over time.

To refill heat, players must venture into the darkness and collect Wax Lumps that restore 75% heat. Outside the light, players get the Smothering Shadows debuff, reducing damage, healing, and vision. Holding wax grants immunity to this debuff for 30 seconds or until deposited into the cart.

Hunters can throw flares that act as light sources, aiding in safe navigation. It’s ideal to assign one player to gather wax while the rest fight enemies near the cart or candles in the light.

Final Escort and The Darkness

At the end of the escort, players board the minecart and are chased by The Darkness toward the dungeon’s entrance. During this phase, players gain the ability to throw dynamite to damage the boss, potentially reducing its health by up to 10%. Active participation here is crucial—don’t just stand around!

The Darkness Trash Mobs

  • Skittering Darkness: Avoid the Unstable Shadows AoE they leave on death.

  • Shuffling Horror: Interrupt every cast of Drain Light to prevent heavy group damage and avoid losing heat from your light source.

  • Corridor Creeper: Immune to CC, gains stacks of Eater of the Dead when near corpses, making it move away from your killed mobs. Tanks should monitor their Shadow Fang stacks and use defensives accordingly.

The Darkness Boss Fight

The boss room is engulfed in Smothering Shadows, except for a few fallen Wax Lump circles and one movable Candlelight. The candle steadily loses heat, which must be replenished to avoid serious penalties. Players need to fetch Wax Lumps to restore heat and become immune to the shadows debuff while carrying them.

If the candle runs out of heat, the boss casts Rising Gloom, applying a 10-minute debuff that increases damage taken by 10% and reduces haste by 5%. Avoid this at all costs.

The boss uses several key abilities that threaten your candle’s heat:

  • Shadowblast: Targets a random player with a 10-yard AoE after 6 seconds. The targeted player should move out of the candlelight to avoid damage.

  • Umbral Slash: A line attack aimed directly at the candle. Assign a player to pick up and move the candle out of this attack’s path.

The Darkness Boss Fight

The boss room is engulfed in Smothering Shadows except for a few fallen Wax Lump circles scattered around the room and a single movable Candlelight. This candle slowly loses heat over time and must be constantly refueled to prevent severe penalties on your group. Players can pick up Wax Lumps scattered nearby to restore 75% heat to the candle and become immune to the shadows debuff while carrying the wax. Managing this heat is crucial because if the candle runs out, the boss will cast Rising Gloom—a dangerous 10-minute debuff increasing damage taken by 10% and reducing haste by 5%.

Several boss abilities make heat management more challenging:

  • Shadowblast targets a random player, exploding with a 10-yard AoE after a 6-second delay. The player should move out of the candlelight area to prevent damage to the group and avoid overheating issues.

  • Umbral Slash is a direct line attack aimed at the candle itself. One player must be assigned to carry the candle and reposition it quickly to avoid this attack.

The boss also summons adds during the fight via Call Darkspawn, spawning three Wriggling Darkspawn at a time. If the channel continues, more adds spawn, so interrupting this ability is critical to prevent being overwhelmed. These adds cast Drain Light, which deals heavy group damage and drains heat from your candle, emphasizing the need for crowd control and interrupts.

Another major challenge comes from the Eternal Darkness channel. This ability deals heavy shadow damage over 4 seconds, with each damage tick further reducing the candle’s heat. When this ability is cast, ensure one of your non-healer players has wax ready to quickly refill the candle mid-cast, preventing heat loss that could lead to Rising Gloom.

Positioning Tips:

  • Tank the boss near the center of the room on the minecart tracks. This spot gives easy access to the four Wax Lump spawn locations, allowing players to quickly grab wax and refill the candle without losing time.

  • Group coordination is essential during this fight to ensure that wax carriers are protected and the candle is moved safely to avoid damage.

Wrap-Up

Darkflame Cleft challenges players with complex mechanics that require precise teamwork and situational awareness. From the initial trash packs like Menial Laborers and Blazing Fiends to the intricate boss fights against Ol’ Waxbeard, Blazikon, The Candle King, and The Darkness, every encounter demands careful attention to interrupts, positioning, and resource management.

Key to success is mastering the balance between offensive pressure and defensive cooldowns, particularly with mechanics involving heat management and crowd control. Always prioritize clearing adds quickly to reduce pressure on healers, and coordinate tightly to control dangerous environmental effects like fire puddles, wax statues, and shadows debuffs.

For the minecart escort, ensure wax is gathered efficiently to maintain the cart’s heat and prepare for the final chase. During the Darkness fight, constant vigilance on candle heat and rapid response to boss abilities will prevent devastating party-wide debuffs.

With practice and communication, your group will overcome the challenges of Darkflame Cleft, gaining valuable rewards and climbing the Mythic+ ranks. Keep adapting to mechanics, share responsibilities among the team, and maintain clear callouts to ensure victory.
