Survival Hunter DPS Guide for The War Within Patch 11.1.7 Season 2
Survival Hunter Overview

“I will hunt you down!” – Rexxar
Survival is a melee DPS spec wearing mail armor and wielding two-handed Agility weapons. Unlike the ranged Hunter specs Marksmanship and Beast Mastery, Survival delivers a fast, up-close fighting style. Survival Hunters rely on brutal melee strikes, venom, and crafted explosives to overwhelm enemies with relentless aggression. They also bring solid survivability and crowd control tools, adding defensive depth in The War Within.
Survival Hunter appeals to players who enjoy fast-paced gameplay, pets, and unique mechanics. It’s especially effective for solo world content.

Survival Hunter Changes in Patch 11.1
Patch 11.1 introduced many updates. The Pack Leader Hero Talent tree was fully redesigned, focusing on summoning three special beasts with unique powers on a fixed rotation. Pack Leader currently outperforms Sentinel in raid damage, while Sentinel shines in Mythic+ for faster AoE bursts and stronger defensives.
Sentinel also received tweaks: Lunar Storm’s cooldown doubled, with increased damage and radius. It now tracks the target slowly, improving usability especially in Mythic+. Trackers were added in-game to fix previous annoyances. The longer cooldown requires careful timing to maximize impact.
The Survival talent tree had notable changes. Flanking Strike is now a choice node paired with Butchery to simplify AoE and balance single-target damage. New Bleed-focused talents Cull the Herd and Born to Kill offer weak buffs reliant on procs and short debuffs, rarely used optimally. Contagious Reagents was buffed to spread DoTs to twice as many targets, helping in Mythic+ AoE.
Bombardier was nerfed to grant only one free Wildfire Bomb, reducing bomb spam but improving gameplay health. Explosives Expert now boosts Wildfire Bomb damage instead of cooldown reduction. These changes reduce bomb overuse while keeping them impactful.
Several bugs were fixed, notably Spearhead and Deadly Duo now correctly apply to pets.
Survival Hunter Hero Talents: Pack Leader and Sentinel
Survival Hunters choose between two Hero Talent trees: Pack Leader and Sentinel.
Pack Leader
A tribute to Rexxar, the legendary Mok’nathal Hunter known for controlling multiple beasts. Pack Leader revolves around summoning special Bear, Boar, and Wyvern pets on rotation using the keystone Howl of the Pack Leader. The gameplay centers on efficiently managing cooldowns and using the right pet for each situation—for example, Bear for mass AoE and Wyvern for cooldown synergy.
Sentinel
Inspired by the Night Elves’ guerrilla warfare, Sentinel focuses on Lunar magic and sustained damage through a persistent DoT. A key mechanic is Lunar Storm, which activates on the next Wildfire Bomb after its cooldown, requiring strategic timing based on enemy movement or expected fight duration.
Currently, Pack Leader is recommended for most PvE content due to higher overall damage output. Sentinel offers stronger upfront AoE and better defensives, making it viable for faster Mythic+ keys or more defensive playstyles.
Playing a Survival Hunter in The War Within Season 2
Survival Hunter gameplay centers on resource management: balancing Focus and Tip of the Spear stacks to maximize DPS without waste.
Avoid Resource Waste: Tip of the Spear is a secondary resource that powers your strongest abilities such as Wildfire Bomb, Explosive Shot, Kill Shot, and Flanking Strike. Avoid overcapping to maintain a steady DPS flow.
Keep Abilities on Cooldown: Your heavy hitters often have cooldowns or charges, so prioritize using Wildfire Bomb, Explosive Shot, Kill Shot, and Flanking Strike as soon as they’re available.
React to Procs: Several talents provide procs that reset or enable powerful abilities. For example, Deathblow allows Kill Shot regardless of target health, Grenade Juggler resets Explosive Shot and Wildfire Bomb cooldowns, and Kill Command can reset itself or other abilities. Quick reaction to these procs is key for optimal Focus usage.

Best Professions for Survival Hunter
In The War Within, professions offer minimal direct DPS benefits, so any profession can work effectively for Survival Hunters. However, some provide useful utility:
Leatherworking: Allows you to craft your own armor, which can be close to or even better than Best in Slot items.
Alchemy: Useful for creating your own potions and consumables.
Enchanting: Enables you to enchant gear without relying on the Auction House, saving gold and time.
Choose professions based on your playstyle and whether you prefer self-sufficiency or gold-making.
Best Races for Survival Hunter
All races from both factions, including Dracthyr, are viable for Survival Hunters.
From a pure damage perspective:
Mag'har Orc stands out as the top choice, outperforming other strong contenders like Orc, Dwarf, Tauren, Human, and Mechagnome by roughly 0.5%.
Most other races are within about 1.5% of these top performers.
Races like Earthen, Vulpera, Undead, and Lightforged Draenei have lower damage potential due to less favorable racial abilities.
Keep in mind that some racial utilities—such as Spatial Rift—can provide unexpected DPS advantages by bypassing mechanics like knockbacks or area denial, which might be crucial in certain fights.
