Unholy Death Knight - The War Within Season 2 DPS Guide
Unholy Death Knight Overview

Unholy Death Knight is a plate-wearing, two-handed melee DPS specialization that revolves around shadow damage, undead summons, and spreading diseases. You’ll command armies of ghouls, infect foes with multiple plagues, and cause explosive AoE with dark magic. The playstyle is highly burst-oriented in both single-target and multi-target combat.
New Unholy Death Knights begin at Level 8, as they are a Hero Class. All races can play Unholy except Dracthyr and Earthen. This specialization is ideal for players who enjoy impactful cooldowns and satisfying AoE bursts.

Strengths:
Powerful AoE burst during cooldowns
High single-target burst potential

Patch 11.1 Changes
Unholy received minor adjustments this season. The most impactful changes include quality-of-life improvements to pet summoning spells Apocalypse and Raise Dead, reducing summon delay and letting ghouls enter combat faster. Apocalypse was also directly buffed by 25%, significantly increasing its overall contribution.
Hero Talents: Rider of the Apocalypse vs. San'layn
Both options are excellent in Raid and Mythic+, each with unique advantages:
San'layn:
Stronger in 45-second burst cycles
Ideal for consistent cleave and sustained AoE
High survivability through self-healing
Rider of the Apocalypse:
Optimized for 90-second burst cycles
Easier execution with less setup
Offers improved mobility tools rarely found in DK kits
Choose based on encounter needs—San'layn excels at AoE-heavy fights, while Rider is better for short burst phases or shield-breaking mechanics.
Playing an Unholy Death Knight in Season 2
Unholy’s gameplay is driven by reactive decisions based on procs and resources rather than fixed rotations. Here are the core principles:
Use Cooldowns On Time: Maximize your burst potential by casting major cooldowns like Dark Transformation and Apocalypse as often as possible.
Spend Sudden Doom Procs: This instant Death Coil cast is your most valuable non-cooldown tool—never sit on procs.
Balance Resources: You juggle three key mechanics—Festering Wounds, Runic Power, and Runes. Proper management ensures smooth uptime and flexibility.
Gearing an Unholy Death Knight
Use this priority as a baseline: Haste > Mastery > Versatility >= Crit
Never ignore Strength, as raw item level often outperforms stat-optimized lower ilvl gear. Sim yourself using Raidbots to make accurate gearing decisions.
Professions
Professions do not offer significant DPS advantages. Choose based on utility:
Blacksmithing: Create your own plate armor
Alchemy: Make your own flasks and potions
Enchanting: Enchant gear independently
Best Races for Unholy Death Knight
Horde:
Troll: Best synergy with 3-minute cooldowns via Berserking
Alliance:
Mechagnome: Highest raw DPS through Combat Analysis
Racial benefits are minor—choose based on aesthetics or secondary perks.
