Marathon Cryo Archive: Map, Vaults and the Compiler Boss

What to Know Before Your First Run

Cryo Archive is the endgame map of Marathon, set aboard the UESC Marathon ship. It went live on March 20, 2026 with patch 1.0.5 and remains the main place for high-value loot. Every death costs more here and every find is worth more, so it pays to prepare.

Three conditions get you onto the map. They are collected in the table below.

Requirement

What you need

Runner level

25, which you can reach faster with Power Leveling

Factions

all six unlocked

Loadout

gear worth at least 5,000 credits

A free Cryo Archive Sponsored Kit is available in the Armory, and since patch 1.0.9 these kits refresh daily rather than once. That lets you learn the routes without risking your main gear.

The access window has changed several times. At launch the map was open every day, and at the time of writing (October 17, 2026) it runs on a weekly schedule from Thursday 10:00 PT (1:00 PM ET) to Sunday at the same time. Check the in-game schedule before you plan an evening. The map is built around full crews, and as of the latest reports the standard mode has no solo queue.

The Map: A Hub and Six Sections

Players describe Cryo Archive as roughly two regular maps stitched together. A large hub sits in the middle with six sections around it, and your crew spawns close to one of them. The first few minutes are usually quiet, and real fights begin closer to the center.

The main areas look like this:

  • Control and Panopticon. The central hub, packed with UESC troops. Crews cross paths here more than anywhere else.

  • Steerage and Revival. Two mirrored sections with a similar spread of loot.

  • Cargo and Index. The ends of the ship. Cargo is cold and can inflict Frostbite, while Index is crowded with UESC soldiers.

  • Biostock and Preservation. Neighboring sections where early fights break out most often.

Loot is everywhere, so bring your biggest backpack. The map also holds unique implants and chip mods: Covert Recovery, Freeloader and Panic Response for armor, and Punishment, Testament and Hurricane for weapons. These come from player reports, and effects may have been tuned in later updates.

Security Clearance and Getting Out

The signature mechanic is Security Clearance. It is progress inside a single run: it grows from kills, terminal hacks and looting, and it unlocks doors, supply rooms and exfils. There are five levels, and the counter starts over every run.

Hacking terminals is the fastest source of points. One hacked monitor adds three points, and players report about 18 points for level 3 and about 45 for level 5. Security Tags dropped by UESC troops add more. The first goal is almost always level 3, because it opens the main rooms with valuable loot.

Level 5 is the gamble. Most crews run out of time before reaching it unless you play aggressively and take tags from other crews. Chase it only with plenty of healing and self-revives.

Extraction is unusual too. You find a terminal and activate it, and an exfil zone appears on the map. You get roughly three to four minutes to reach it. Do not linger.

Vaults and Keys

The map holds seven locked Vaults, and each one needs its own key. Players say keys come from other maps, from Cryo Archive itself and from special tasks. If you do not have time to hunt for them, Keys farming covers it.

The key is only the start. Players describe a typical set for opening a Vault: batteries, a filled Cryo Coolant and, for some Vaults, Credentials dropped by Wardens. Scanners help locate batteries and terminals, so activate them early.

Inside is a short puzzle with symbols on screens, and then the reward opens. After the schedule adjustment, AI Subroutines drop from every Vault at a 100% rate, so there is no luck involved.

The last Vaults are harder than the rest, and step-by-step routes differ between guides. Check the details against in-game hints.

Compiler: The Final Boss

Compiler is a boss found only in Cryo Archive. It waits at the end of Vault 7, so few crews ever reach it. One player describes the fight as a simplified raid encounter: you activate terminals with matching symbols, and a green bubble appears in the middle of the room. The crew shoots the core from inside it, and when the boss opens its cape, it shoots the ribcage.

Even strong shields fold under the boss. Players advise bringing plenty of healing, self-revives and your best weapons, and agreeing on roles beforehand. If your crew lacks coordination, Coaching helps: a run-through with an experienced player saves several failed attempts.

Winning gives a unique weapon, the Biotoxic Disinjector. The S'Phticide shell style also requires killing Compiler in the standard PvP Cryo Archive. The PvE mode Vault Breaker does not grant it.

Loot and Rewards

The main reason to run Cryo Archive is loot you cannot get elsewhere. Players report Prestige weapons such as the V00 Zeus RG, V85 Circuit Breaker and Impact HAR, golden backpacks and shields, and Alien Alloy and Hazard Capsules for faction upgrades.

Another source of rewards is Contracts. CyberAcme reportedly offers tasks tied to Cryo Archive. How often they reset depends on updates, so confirm the terms in game.

What Has Changed Since Launch

The map has gone through several reworks since March. Season 2 began on June 2, most progress was reset and Cryo Archive stayed in rotation. Ranked low and high stakes were merged, and the schedule was split so Cryo Archive and Ranked runs do not overlap.

From July 21 to August 4, a Vault Breaker event ran on the same map. It was an experimental PvE mode: you could play Solo, Duo or Trio, a free Vault Breaker Sponsored Kit was provided, and loot could not be extracted.

One more piece of news: the October 6 refresh reset progression, and Season 3 was pushed to December 8. While there is no new season, it is a good time to sort out your Battle Pass and close old goals. Data as of October 17, 2026.

How to Prepare for a Run

Experienced players agree on a few practical rules. Use the free Sponsored Kit for early runs to learn the hub and terminal positions, and bring your main loadout once you trust your routes.

  • Do not start a fight until you have checked the area.

  • Carry more healing and ammo than seems necessary.

  • Decide ahead of time who handles the scanner and who handles loot.

  • Watch the exfil timer, because the window is short.

If you cannot put a crew together and your schedule is tight, you can Rent a Booster so an experienced player who knows the routes is beside you. In every other case it is enough to read the map well, keep communication tight and avoid greedy extra trips.
