How to Play Black Cat in Marvel Rivals

Role, difficulty and what changed since launch

Black Cat is a Duelist who joined Marvel Rivals in Season 7.5 on April 17, 2026. She plays from the flank: she climbs walls, double jumps, steals Fortune from enemies and spends it on upgrades and artifacts. She has 275 health, a 4-star difficulty rating and a ground speed of 6 m/s.

Six months have passed since launch, so this guide accounts for later patches, with data as of October 16, 2026. Season 10 is live and Season 10.5 started on October 9. The core kit is the same, but Phantom Pursuit, ability costs and some team bonuses have changed, so each figure below says which point in time it belongs to.

Her tempo does not fit the usual "tanks in front, damage behind" setup. One clean dive on a support can win a round, while a greedy entry with no exit hands the enemy the initiative. If you want to reach the ranks where those dives actually work sooner, rank boosting can help, but the timing still has to be learned by hand.

Black Cat abilities

Her whole kit runs on Fortune. Basic attacks and hits on enemies build it, and the upgraded abilities and the shop spend it. Ability names are kept as they appear in the game.

Her passives are Stealthy Catwalk (hold Space to climb walls), Malkin Misfortune (a Jinx effect) and Sticky Paws (steals Fortune on hit). The chain crowd control protection added in 7.5 applies to every hero. Her own way to clear crowd control is the Chernobog's Crystal artifact.

Patch changes. At launch Phantom Pursuit made her untargetable during the dash. The September 11, 2026 update (Season 10) removed that and replaced it with 50% damage reduction and Unstoppable during the cast. Its Fortune cost dropped from 300 to 250, and Fortune gained per hit fell from 150 to 125. According to Season 8.5 patch notes (June 12), the ultimate no longer fully refreshes on an elimination, and the Calling Card dash range was cut from 60 to 40 meters. The percentage damage on the ultimate was removed in the same patch.

Fortune and the Gilded Deal shop

Fortune is the hero's internal currency. It grows from hits on enemies and from Turn of Fortune, which also steals it from the target. You spend it on empowered abilities and in Gilded Deal, where it buys artifacts for the current fight.

Artifacts and prices at the Season 7.5 launch:

  • Tablet of Destinies - 100, grants a random amount of Fortune.

  • Helm of Hades - 200, temporary invisibility.

  • Faltine Flame Orb - 100, reveals and marks enemies.

  • Chernobog's Crystal - 200, removes crowd control.

  • Ring of Zona - 200, opens a portal.

  • Mento-Fish - 200, grounds enemies and disables their movement abilities.

Prices may have shifted in later patches. In Season 10 Helm of Hades lasts 3 seconds instead of 2, and the speed bonus decays over 3 seconds instead of 2. The logic of choosing is simple: invisibility and the portal help you get in and out, reveal counters stealthy heroes, and crowd control removal or movement denial settle specific matchups. You cannot buy everything, Fortune runs out fast.

How to play: flank, timing, exit

Black Cat does not enter through the front door. Come in along walls, from high ground or off the main line, and pick a target that has left cover: a support or a wounded Duelist. Tanks are best avoided: they take too long to kill, and she lives on fast eliminations.

Black Cat dashing along the flank
  • Bank Fortune and do not spend it right away. Wait until a support or a wounded Duelist is in the open.

  • Treat Phantom Pursuit as a finisher. It works best when the enemy is already backing off under pressure.

  • Plan the exit in advance. The double jump, Cat's Cradle and wall climbing are for leaving with a kill, not just for entering.

  • Pick artifacts by matchup. Take reveal against stealthy heroes and Chernobog's Crystal against crowd control combos.

Use Calling Card when several enemies are visible and you have a safe starting point. Begin with a support or a weak Duelist. After the Season 8.5 nerfs, do not count on an easy cleanup across the whole map.

If working through the details alone is dull, personal coaching with a review of your recordings works well.

Team-Up and teammates

Black Cat has the Lucky Loan Team-Up with White Fox and Captain America. She is the anchor and got +5% damage when Season 7.5 launched. Check the in-game Team-Up description for the current value.

  • White Fox: gains Nine-Tailed Aura, and her tracking Spirit Tails heal and speed up allies while damaging and slowing enemies.

  • Captain America: gains Vibranium Bastion, which widens the shield block area and redirects deflected projectiles.

Season 10 added a Black Panther Team-Up: hits on enemies give Black Cat 50 Fortune per enemy, up to 100. Players also often name Mantis and Luna Snow as good partners for healing and pressure in quick skirmishes, but that comes from player experience, not patch numbers.

Who gives Black Cat trouble

She struggles most against heroes who are hard to catch, who punish flanks and who protect their allies. There is no single list. In post-launch discussions the most cited names were Storm, Iron Man, Human Torch, Peni Parker, Cloak & Dagger and Groot. August 2026 statistics point to Devil Dinosaur, Peni Parker and The Thing. Only Peni Parker appears in both.

Peni Parker, a tough matchup for Black Cat

The general rule is simpler than any list: airborne mobile heroes, heroes with slows and traps, and combos that heal the target ruin a dive. Do not force the kill against them. Back off and look for another angle.

Her ranking is mixed. By July 2026 she was among the most banned heroes, and one Season 10.5 tier list puts her in S tier after the Season 10 rework.

Skins and the rank reward

The Beguiling Blue skin was a free reward for reaching Gold in Season 7.5 ranked play, claimable after the season ended. It came together with the Urban Predator and Gilded Shadow bundles. That reward was tied to the season, so check current conditions in the game.

If ranked mode is still locked, competitive unlock can open it. Missing cosmetic rewards can be covered by skins unlock.

Is she good for beginners?

Mostly no. Black Cat looks flashy but demands timing, Fortune control and target selection, and aggression alone is not enough. A newcomer is better off leveling up first and getting used to the modes, for example through account leveling, and switching to her later.

If you want the rhythm of playing with a strong partner, rent a booster and learn from their decisions. And if you aim for the top rank, look at One Above All.
