Marvel Rivals Season 8.5 Recap: What Launched and What Remains

What the Mid-Season 8.5 Update Brought

Season 8.5 of Marvel Rivals launched on June 12, 2026 and added four big things at once: a new Duelist, Cyclops; Bounty Annihilation, an arcade mode for 36 players; the K'un-Lun: Shenloong Arena map; and Blast Slash, a Team-Up for Cyclops and Wolverine. Summer events and a handful of balance changes rounded it out.

The season ended on July 10, when Season 9 began. As of October 16, 2026 the game is in Season 10.5, so this is a look back at a finished chapter. Data is current as of October 16, 2026.

The short version: Cyclops stayed in the roster, the 18v18 mode was an arcade playlist, and nearly every 8.5 event is long closed.

Dates and Timeline

Maintenance began on June 12 at 09:00 UTC and was expected to take about two hours, so servers opened around 11:00 UTC. Here is every 8.5 date in one place.

Balance hotfix buffing Cyclops

It was a mid-season update inside Season 8, so if you want to climb the ladder with the new hero in the pool, Rank Boost can help.

Cyclops: The New Duelist

Cyclops arrived as a ranged Duelist built around his optic beams. His game is about aiming beams and bouncing them off walls and surfaces.

Cyclops and Wolverine, the Blast Slash Team-Up pair

According to player reports, his kit looks like this: Optic Blast as the main attack, Concussive Beam that refracts, Ricochet Force (a tracking beam off terrain that grants Bonus Health), a dash called Propulsion Burst and a launch upward, Optic Ascent. His Ultimate, Ruby Rage, removes the visor and fires a sweeping beam that destroys barriers in its path and leaves volatile energy that detonates for extra damage. Check names and binds in game.

Ricochets reward knowing the maps, since you need to see where a beam will end up. Coaching with an experienced player is a faster way to learn the finer points.

After Season 9 removed Team-Up anchor bonuses, Cyclops got a small buff on July 11: Optic Blast damage went from 21 to 22 per tick, and a direct Ricochet Force hit from 70 to 75.

Blast Slash: The Cyclops and Wolverine Team-Up

The Blast Slash Team-Up links two X-Men. Cyclops is the anchor, and Wolverine swaps Vicious Rampage for Kinetic Claws: a short lunge forward with a flurry of slashes and extended claw range.

Anchor bonuses were removed in Season 9, so Blast Slash no longer works this way in the current game. It still shows how the developers built a Team-Up around a new hero in 8.5.

In practice the combo needed both heroes on one team. To practice the pairing without waiting on matchmaking, you can use Rent a Booster.

Bounty Annihilation and the K'un-Lun Map

Bounty Annihilation is an 18v18 arcade mode, 36 players in total. It launched with the season and was temporarily unavailable on Xbox Series S at release because of performance.

The Thing and Hulk, heavy heroes for 18v18 fights

According to player guides, the rules are: the first team to 300 points wins. A Final Hit is worth 1 point and a Mission Area is worth 100. There are three areas (A, B and C), only one is active at a time and its point pool is limited. Heroes can be duplicated, there are no hero limits, and you can pick your respawn point.

K'un-Lun: Shenloong Arena was built only for this mode. With fights this big, positioning, zone control and target priority count for more than duels.

As an arcade mode it was a good place to try new heroes. If you hadn't opened ranked yet, you needed Competitive Unlock.

Summer Events and the 616 Day Vault

All 8.5 events have ended, but they show how rewards are built in Marvel Rivals.

Groot, the reward of the Shenloong Tournament event
  • Rivals Summer Festival. It began on June 18. According to guides, four activities at Hellfire Bay Beach handed out up to 2,500 Units, plus 200 Units, an emote and a title from Uplifting Welcome between June 28 and July 1.

  • 616 Day Vault. It ran from June 12, 09:00 UTC to June 26, 02:00 UTC, with six limited-time cosmetic bundles and four events (Summer Special, Summer Special Vol. 2, Ancient Powers Awaken and Queen's Codex).

  • Shenloong Tournament. From June 12 to July 10, 09:00 UTC. Completing its missions unlocked the Groot - Ironwood Serpent costume for free.

If you missed a costume or bundle from those events, it returns only if the developers re-run the event or sale. For collectors there is Skins Unlock, and for reward hunters, Achievements.

Balance and Path to Doomsday

A few balance changes from patch 1.55 can be named. Black Cat was nerfed, and her Cat's Cradle was fixed to grant only one Fortune stack per use. Jeff the Land Shark lost some speed.

The remaining changes are in the full patch 1.55 notes.

Path to Doomsday did not continue in 8.5 because the developers pushed its phases back. Phase 2 (Age of Ultron) moved to late July, Phase 3 (Infinity War, a 2v2 PvP mode) began on October 9 with Season 10.5, and the PvE phase, Endgame, is scheduled for late October according to player roadmaps.

What Still Matters from Season 8.5

Cyclops stayed in the roster and received a buff on July 11. Bounty Annihilation and the 8.5 events are no longer available, and Vault cosmetics return only if the developers re-run the promotions.

If your account is still low level, Account Leveling speeds up the start. For the top of the ladder, there is One Above All.
