Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Guide: Loot, Survival and Extraction

Last Updated:24 Oct 2026

DMZ is the live extraction mode in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, released on October 23, 2026. This guide was checked on October 24 against Infinity Ward's October 23 Launch Patch Notes. It covers the launch period before Season 1, scheduled for November 6; no numeric build is stated in those notes.

DMZ belongs to the paid MW4 package, rather than being a free Warzone playlist. It is a core launch mode with post-launch support planned, not a currently advertised seasonal rotation. The developers have not guaranteed its entire future lifespan. Supported platforms are PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.

Deploy solo, as a duo or as a trio. Hajin supports up to 20 squads and 60 players, spawning at the same time. Matchmaking aims to group similar squad sizes but does not guarantee a solo-only lobby. Disable Squad Fill to enter alone; leave it enabled to find teammates. Story Mission, Dynamic Operation and Free Roam choices also help match players with similar goals. There is no public PvE-only queue.

The raid loop: a small objective is enough

At the Forward Operating Base (FOB), choose an Active Duty Operator, inspect your Orders, assemble equipment and select a deployment. Inside Hajin, gather supplies, pursue a manageable objective, monitor danger and extract. Back at base, store useful loot and prepare the next run.

A beginner's success condition should be narrower than "clear the map": learn a route, complete a suitable task or bring home one ingredient you need. Once that objective is done, the next fight is a new gamble with loot you already earned. Decide deliberately whether it improves the run.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Guide: Loot, Survival and Extraction

A first-raid plan from FOB preparation to extraction and storage.

Prepare a loadout you can afford to lose

Ready Up offers a Free Loadout. It is a useful way to learn without committing your best stored equipment, and its items remain yours after a successful extraction. Check the actual kit rather than assuming every free roll supplies everything you want.

A sensible starting check is a usable weapon, Plate Carrier, Backpack and Medkit. The loadout supports two main weapon slots, melee, Tactical and Lethal equipment, a Field Upgrade, Fire Support, headgear and Self-Revive equipment. Some items require progression, crafting or looting before you can equip them.

The Basic Pack has eight slots. Larger bags add capacity, while appropriate upgraded bags provide Secure Slots. Put a rare recipe or manual into a protected slot as soon as you find it; ordinary backpack space does not provide that protection. Weapons cannot go into Secure Slots. Critical Story Mission and Dynamic Operation items use a dedicated Mission Item slot, rather than requiring you to clear a normal loot slot.

Armor plates populate the armor slot on infil. Traits and an Armor Box can increase your available supply. A Plate Carrier and spare plates serve different purposes: better capacity is not a reason to neglect replenishment. Keys open specific loot rooms; read their location clues before carrying a valuable key into an unrelated run.

Hajin: learn one part before crossing everything

The current launch destination is Hajin, with 13 major POIs and more than 60 named locations. No live rotation through older DMZ maps is established here. Weather, enemy activity and access conditions can change how a familiar route plays.

Area

Documented AI threat

Practical use

Mirae General Hospital

Low

Medical-oriented exploration; still check interiors and other players.

Songdo Wharf

Low

Learn shoreline movement without assuming the area is empty.

Cheongun Village

Low outside; casino High

Treat the casino as a separate commitment.

Haneul Nuclear Reactor

High, with radiation

Bring appropriate protection and a specific purpose.

The Grid

Critical; tech complex Extreme

Save deep pushes for a prepared squad or specialist run.

Threat describes AI danger, not the presence of rival squads. A Low label is not a safe-zone marker. Locked rooms need their own access method; underground spaces and alternative entrances reward reconnaissance. Do not assume one key grants access to every secured facility.

Objectives: choose what fits the equipment

Story Missions provide replayable narrative objectives with briefings, rewards and completion milestones. Dynamic Operations offer multi-step tasks, DMZ XP, Cash and Supply Drops whose quality improves with consecutive completions in a deployment. You can select an operation before infil or find a Dynamic Ops phone in the field.

Side Ops are smaller opportunities, such as finding supplies, interacting with towers or repairing a vehicle. DMZ Orders are progression directives checked at the FOB and on the Tac-Map. Read the active requirement and reward before leaving; the current structure is not the old list of faction mission tiers.

For a first run, prefer a task that does not force a boss fight or player hunt. Hunt Operators is a PvP Dynamic Operation, so it is a poor accidental choice for a squad trying to gather materials quietly. No universal DMZ daily or weekly mission reward table is established in the reviewed launch guide; check the current Orders and Events screens.

AI, bosses and escalation

North Korean hostile forces include ordinary and armored soldiers, drones, robotic K9 units, convoys and aircraft. Noise and sustained fighting can escalate the response. Break contact and reposition if the engagement stops serving your objective. No verified formula promises weaker bosses or proportionally fewer enemies when you enter solo.

Lieutenants are tougher named targets. Gorani is associated with woodland around Hanrim Village; Bale is associated with Chang-san Air Base. Check Boss Board intel and current activity rather than treating them as guaranteed fixed spawns. Commanders include Colossus, Deathstalker and a Tank, with demanding fights and valuable loot.

A Lieutenant's Dog Tag Case can expose its carrier to other Operators on the map. Extracting it advances the Boss Board, while the fight can also award XP, Cash, a weapon and a possible loot-room key. Do not pick up a broadcasting reward without agreeing on an exit. This is a special-risk objective, not the default beginner route.

AI forces, rival Operators and extraction pressure require separate risk checks.

PvP, truces and getting back up

Other squads share the zone. Proximity Chat and the Ping Wheel support communication, Truce requests and assimilation. An assimilated squad is capped at four players; this does not allow two full trios to become a six-player team. A truce is no guarantee against betrayal. An old pleading-for-help sequence is not established as the rescue procedure here.

Player hunting also creates notoriety. The Bounty system can make aggressive Operators Wanted; hunters buy intel at Bounty Stations and must extract a target's Dog Tag to claim its reward. This gives repeated PvP a cost beyond the ammunition spent.

Downed is different from permanently lost. Teammates can help a downed player, and every Operator has Tourniquet: it gets you up wounded, with 100 maximum health instead of 150. A Medkit repairs the wound and restores Tourniquet availability; temporary healing is not the same repair. Self-Revive equipment also exists.

Possum is a specific Trait allowing a return from death into Last Stand once per match. It is not a universal ability or a glitch method. Do not assume an enemy body is harmless, or promise every dead teammate a normal revive. If your run ends with an eliminated Operator, use the MIA rules below.

Extraction: call, hold and board

Find an active exfil site marked by green smoke. Locations are enabled from a pool, so plan from the current match rather than a remembered coordinate. Call the twin-rotor helicopter, defend the approaches, board when it arrives and stay aboard until extraction completes.

Scout before calling. Roofs, tree lines and the route behind you matter as much as the landing zone itself. AI pressure can grow, and other squads can contest the site. Flares are loud and visible from far away. Position for cover and boarding rather than standing in the open watching the smoke.

Fulton and Flare alternatives are officially named. Their universal availability, prices, capacities and complete activation requirements are not established in the reviewed material, so do not rely on a private exit you have not actually obtained. The active-site count and one universal final-exfil schedule are also not confirmed here. Follow the current timer and radiation state; missing your usable exit puts unsecured carried loot at risk.

What stays and what is lost

Category

After a failed extraction

What to do

Carried gear and normal bag slots

At risk of loss

Bring a replaceable kit and leave after securing the target loot.

Items in Secure Slots

Protected

Prioritize eligible rare manuals, recipes or ingredients.

FOB Stash and banked funds

Remain at base

Offload before redeploying; distinguish banked money from carried Cash.

Earned DMZ XP and permanent FOB upgrades

Not erased by one failed run

Review the After Action Report rather than judging only by the backpack.

Eliminated Active Duty Operator

MIA

Recover at Operators for Cash or dismiss and replace.

Recovery preserves the Operator's Traits, but does not restore their lost gear. More invested Trait Points mean a higher recovery cost. Do not dismiss a developed Operator merely because the new equipment screen looks empty.

Cash needs care: the FOB guide describes carried deployment Cash reaching the Bank after exfil, while launch hands-on reporting says operation earnings can already be banked before death. Those statements do not support "all money is lost" or "every loose note is safe". Check the banked award and carried balance separately in the report. A dedicated mission slot likewise does not prove every unfinished mission item or objective survives failure; follow its actual completion condition.

Modern Warfare 4 DMZ Guide: Loot, Survival and Extraction

Successful extraction, protected progress and unsecured carried loot follow different rules.

Economy, weapons and lasting progression

The Stash starts with separate capacities of 40 items and 12 weapons. Move extracted supplies out of the deployment loadout. Sell unwanted valuables, but inspect crafting requirements first: an item needed for an upgrade can be worth more to you than its immediate sale value.

The 3D Printer opens at DMZ Level 2, Vendor at 5 and Gunsmith at 10. Crafting uses Resources, ingredients and unlocked Recipes. Resources break down into Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals; intact ingredients require space. Track a recipe to plan a purposeful collection run. The Vendor's stock rotates; do not assume an old price or barter recipe still applies. No universal in-field Buy Station catalogue is established by these FOB rules.

Extracting one gun gives you that instance. Extracting its Weapon Manual enables repeat purchases at the DMZ Gunsmith; weapons and builds cost DMZ Cash. Weapon levels and compatible attachment unlocks are shared with Multiplayer, but DMZ purchase access is separate from Multiplayer weapon unlocks. This system should not be replaced with an assumed old insured-slot cooldown. Weapon Insurance Contracts are named in the Vault kit, but that listing alone does not establish universal coverage or return conditions.

Keep progression layers separate: DMZ Player Level runs to 70; it also contributes to the overall account career. Each Active Duty Operator develops Dog Tags and up to 18 regular Trait Points across Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist. Operator Prestige is a separate voluntary sacrifice of Cash, gear and regular Traits for a random permanent Trait. Check every sacrificed item before confirming. Up to three permanent Traits can be kept simultaneously; later Prestiges offer replacements.

Weapon XP develops guns, while the first MW4 Battle Pass belongs to Season 1. Permanent FOB upgrades and Operator Prestige are not evidence of an automatic seasonal wipe. No detailed seasonal reset schedule was confirmed at this cutoff; recheck future notes before treating stored supplies as either guaranteed forever or scheduled for deletion.

Your first successful run

·        At the FOB, select one simple Order or ingredient target. Take an affordable kit and medical supplies; use Squad Fill if you want support.

·        Use a suitable deployment, such as free Ground infil for Free Roam. Check your actual spawn, nearby threats and an exit route.

·        Search a modest area for supplies. Protect eligible rare finds in a Secure Slot and avoid turning the run into an unplanned boss hunt.

·        Complete the manageable objective. Reassess health, ammunition, backpack value and time before accepting anything else.

·        Scout an active exfil, call, defend and board. Back at the FOB, inspect the report and offload the loot before another deployment.

Solo gives you control over pace and loot decisions, but fewer rescue options and less coverage while boarding. A squad can split scouting and medical roles, but needs a shared route and agreement about PvP. Neither format makes a dangerous objective automatically safe. Stay close enough to support one another rather than chasing three unrelated tasks.

What the current update changes

The October 23 update fixes DMZ Order/intel and FOB-upgrade tracking, Bounties, incorrect challenge text and some terrain collisions. Disposable Parachutes now have three uses; Gas Masks no longer immediately break on entering radiation. UAV Towers can be taken back from enemy control. These are current corrections, not proof of a new map rotation, extraction-point count, inventory wipe or new mission chain.

Frequently asked questions

What is DMZ in the current Call of Duty?

It is MW4's live paid PvPvE extraction mode on Hajin: prepare at the FOB, pursue objectives, gather loot and extract for later deployments.

What do you lose after death?

Unsecured carried gear and loot are at risk. Secure Slot items, base storage and earned XP are separate; an eliminated Operator becomes MIA and can be recovered with Traits, but without lost gear.

Can you play DMZ solo?

Yes. Disable Squad Fill. You can still encounter larger squads, and there is no guaranteed solo-only or public PvE-only queue.

How does extraction work?

Locate active green smoke, call the helicopter, hold the site and board until extraction completes. Scout for ambushes and leave before radiation removes your practical escape options.
