Modern Warfare 4 Progression and Prestige Guide
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is live. This guide was checked on October 24, 2026 against Infinity Ward's October 23 Launch Patch Notes. It covers the launch period before Season 1, scheduled for November 6. No numeric build identifier is supplied in those notes.
Your first decision is simple: finish the base career, then choose whether a reset is worth its bonuses. Prestige is optional and offers two paths. It does not automatically strip your loadouts when you complete a match at the base cap.
Track | Current limit | What it means |
Military Rank | Level 1 to 55 | Private I to Commander; complete Level 55 to qualify for Prestige. |
Account Prestige | 10 stages | Choose Classic or Regular again when entering each next stage. |
Prestige Master | Displayed Level 56 to 1000 | Follows Prestige 10; Level 1000 reaches Prestige Legend. |
Seasonal cap | No separate cap announced | Do not substitute another CoD's seasonal level ceiling. |
The displayed end point is 1000, not an invented sum of all repeated base levels. The October 23 update does not announce additional Prestige stages, a higher cap or replacement rewards.

The account career leads through ten Prestige stages to Master, with a path choice at each entry.
What the first 55 levels unlock
Military Rank expands access to weapons, Perks, lethal and tactical Equipment, Field Upgrades, Killstreaks and loadouts. Begin with Default Loadouts; Create-a-Class opens at Level 4. Selected current milestones include the Han 86 at 4, M4 at 14 and Throwing Knife at 48.
These examples are orientation points, not a complete unlock table. Use Career / Progression / MP Level Unlocks for your next item. Published official summaries disagree on some weapon thresholds, so an old game's list or a beta screenshot is a poor shopping list for a Permanent Unlock Token.
Gunsmith development is another layer: using a weapon earns Weapon XP and unlocks attachments. Compatible Shared Attachments can already be available from earlier progress. An owned attachment milestone can trigger Bonus Level Up rather than requiring the same unlock again. Check the target gun's progression before switching to an unrelated weapon just for one module. Gunny optimizes using attachments you own.
Armory appears under Career / Challenges, but the reviewed launch documentation does not establish a complete current access requirement and challenge recipe. Treat a visible locked menu as a prompt to check its own requirements. Do not import an older Armory's daily-win counter.
How to enter Prestige
Finish Level 55, stop searching for a match, then open Career / Progression / Prestige. Review the available track and its reset information before confirming. Player Prestige and Weapon Prestige cannot be activated while matchmaking is searching; the October 23 UI update explicitly clarifies this restriction.
Choose a route for the next Prestige. You can reconsider at a later Prestige entry: selecting Classic once does not permanently commit the account to Classic. Likewise, Regular is a full progression route rather than a decision to remain at Commander forever.
Before confirming, identify the loadout you need for your next session. If it depends on late-level Perks or Equipment, plan around their availability. If you are working on a precise attachment-dependent challenge, avoid resetting anything until you understand that challenge's requirements.
Classic versus Regular: what resets and what stays
Item | Classic Prestige | Regular Prestige |
Player level | Restarts at 1 | Restarts at 1 |
Normal Level Unlocks | Reset; earn access again | Retained |
Create-a-Class progression | Reset | Content retained |
Track XP bonus | Stated 20% boost | No Classic boost |
Permanent Unlock Token | One for choosing Classic | No Classic token |
Prestige cosmetics | Shared rewards plus bonuses | Shared rewards |
Classic suits players who enjoy rebuilding access and collecting its extra variants. Regular is easier to fit around a stable team loadout or an unfinished challenge. The XP advantage alone does not establish which route will finish faster for you: losing essential equipment can change how effectively you play.
Do not read "level unlock reset" as a documented deletion of every weapon record. The reviewed account-Prestige explanation does not enumerate every weapon-level counter, attachment field, saved build, statistic or challenge counter under Classic. It also does not provide a complete itemized cosmetic-retention matrix. Check the current confirmation screen for these fields; a blanket "everything is erased" or "everything is safe" is not supported.
Regular explicitly retains level unlocks and Create-a-Class content. That documented promise is more useful than guessing from another game's Prestige model. Neither account path should be confused with the separate, explicitly described Weapon Prestige reset below.

Classic and Regular differ in access resets and bonuses; most Prestige rewards are shared.
Permanent unlocks: spend the token on a real bottleneck
A Classic token protects one eligible Level Unlock item through future Classic resets. Throwing Knife is the official example: ordinarily Level 48, it can remain accessible after using the token. This is access protection, not a voucher to finish every weapon's attachment tree.
A sensible priority is a late unlock used across several classes. Compare the Perk, Field Upgrade, Killstreak or Equipment you repeatedly miss against a weapon you can comfortably replace. Spend based on actual session needs rather than a generic tier list.
Owned Store or seasonal Battle Pass Blueprints can provide permanent access to the corresponding base weapon. Check what you already own before spending a scarce token on that same access. This does not mean a Blueprint grants every attachment or requires buying an item to progress normally.
What Prestige rewards actually give you
Prestige supplies icons and cosmetic milestones, including Operator skins, Weapon Blueprints, emblems, loading screens, charms and decals. Most rewards are shared; Classic adds bonus variants. For example, Prestige 1 culminates in The Vet Mosin-Nagant Blueprint on Regular and The Vet Prime on Classic. Prestige 2 instead uses Calm Resolve and Trench Fiend for the PPSh-41, so not every Classic reward is simply named "Prime".
Prestige 1 also awards Sandstorm for Army SF Airborne on entry. Its Level 10, 20, 30 and 40 milestones are a loading screen, emblem, Engage! charm and Men of Service decal. Check the reward preview when selecting a route; distinguish cosmetic preference from an actual progression advantage.
After Prestige 10, Prestige Master continues from displayed Level 56. Entry includes Paragon for Park and an orange level color. Legacy icon sets begin at Level 100 and recur every 100 levels; additional colors begin at 100 and recur every 25. Prestige Legend is at 1000, but its final reward details remain classified in the reviewed announcement. No hidden Operator, weapon bonus or extra tier is confirmed here.
Weapon Prestige is a separate decision
Account Prestige changes the career route. Weapon Prestige is optional after a particular gun reaches its own maximum weapon level. Do not assume all weapons share one maximum.
Weapon Prestige resets that gun to Level 1 and relocks ordinary attachments on it. Detailed documentation exempts Apex and Blueprint Attachments, retains weapon cosmetics, and says Shared Attachments remain unlocked on other weapons. The October 23 fix addresses Military Camos and Apex appearing locked again after Weapon Prestige; it is not a newly announced loss of those unlocks.
After leveling the gun to maximum again in Weapon Prestige 1, Weapon Prestige Master starts automatically without another Level 1 reset. Published camo reward milestones include 150 and 250; a reward at 250 alone is not proof of a universal weapon hard cap. Apex unlocks from supported full weapon leveling, not from an assumed mandatory Prestige reset. Some attachments tested during beta were early seasonal event content and are not all currently obtainable.
Which XP moves which system?

Player Level, Weapon Level and the future Battle Pass have separate progression goals.
Player XP advances the account's Military Rank and Prestige route. Weapon XP develops the gun and its attachment progression. A weapon-level notification does not prove the same amount of account progress, and a player-level unlock does not finish a gun's modules.
Battle Pass progression is separate. MW4's first pass belongs to Season 1, so it is not a live launch-period Prestige track. No universal Event XP meter is established for every MW4 event. Read each event's actual task and reward; a temporary challenge awarding a token is not automatically a separate XP currency.
For a token, select the track you intend to advance. Player Double XP and Double Weapon XP solve different problems. Current reporting says the timer counts in-match time and pauses in menus. Do not calculate an unverified combined multiplier from Classic's bonus, personal tokens and global events.
Challenges, seasons and shared progression
There are three Multiplayer Daily Challenges, a bonus for completing the set, and one daily reroll of one task. Daily requirements rotate; the current menu determines what you can complete today. Calling Card challenges include Regular and Elite sets; camo and reticle tasks have their own conditions. A cosmetic challenge reward is not automatically a Player XP award or a Prestige level.
The launch notes state Weekly Challenges will not be available in Season 1. A separate universal Prestige Challenges reward list is not established in the reviewed MW4 material. Do not fill that gap with a previous title's category names, task list or XP values.
Ten account Prestige stages are part of the launch career. No season-gated expansion, seasonal Prestige cap or automatic seasonal Prestige wipe is announced in the reviewed material. The documented resets are the chosen Prestige actions. This does not provide a complete guarantee for every future season: recheck a season's actual notes before planning around new caps or reset rules.
Multiplayer and DMZ contribute to the overall player career. DMZ also has its separate 70-level unlock track; Multiplayer XP does not raise that DMZ level. Warzone joins MW4's integration with Season 1, not during this launch cutoff. Campaign can award tokens and cosmetics, but campaign kills are not established as account-rank XP. No Zombies leveling route is claimed for this game.
A short plan for faster progression
Choose compatible daily tasks, then a currently available mode where you can contribute consistently. Hardpoint and Domination offer objectives around which to build a session; high action helps only if you stay involved. Use Player XP boosts for the career and develop one useful gun alongside it. This is a planning recommendation, not a measured claim that one mode always wins.
Check Events for current deadlines. Boot Camp is reported as a launch challenge event ending November 6, with tokens and a completion Blueprint; do not turn its temporary availability into a permanent method. No active global launch Double XP weekend was verified at this cutoff. Before each new Prestige, compare the next reward with the equipment you will need immediately afterward.
