Werewolf Druid in PoE 2: Fast Cold Melee League Starter
A Cold Werewolf Built for Speed
The Werewolf Druid in Path of Exile 2 is a cold melee build: fast strikes, frequent freezes and constant movement. It skips human-form spellcasting and lives in wolf form. The Druid arrived in patch 0.4.0 The Last of the Druids on December 12, 2025, and the werewolf is a fair choice among league starter builds.

The current league is 0.5.0 Return of the Ancients. The 0.5.5 Forbidden Rites bonus event made no skill gem or ascendancy balance changes, so the core of the build is the same: attack speed, cold damage, freezes and mobility.
Below you will find strengths and weaknesses, skills, passives, gear, stat priorities and practical habits that make the start smoother. Skill descriptions follow player breakdowns, so check exact values against in-game tooltips.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The werewolf feels good from the first hours: you run fast, hit fast and almost never stand still. The main risk shows up on bosses, where everything depends on your buff window.
Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
High attack and movement speed | Boss damage depends heavily on Lunar Blessing uptime |
Reliable pack clear thanks to freezes and Herald of Ice chains | Needs cold damage and steady ice shard generation |
Easy start: Pounce for movement and a cheap Herald of Ice setup | The rotation asks you to watch Rage and cooldowns |
It suits players who like an aggressive pace and do not want to spend much currency on early upgrades. If you prefer careful play from range, the werewolf will feel unusual.
Skills and Rotation
The kit revolves around cold, ice shards and short buff windows. The core gems are Lunar Blessing, Pounce, Lunar Assault, Rake, Cross Slash and Herald of Ice, and you obtain them through Uncut Skill Gems.

Lunar Blessing is the main boss damage tool. According to player reports, it adds cold damage and spawns a Moonbeam with your hits, and its duration scales with the Rage you spend. The effect is short, so keep it up as often as you can.
For clearing maps, Pounce and Lunar Assault are enough. Pounce carries you between packs, Lunar Assault reportedly freezes targets, and frozen enemies set off Herald of Ice explosions. This costs very little and scales with attack speed and cold damage.
Against single targets, players suggest cycling Rake, Lunar Assault and Cross Slash. By the same accounts, Rake and Lunar Assault build ice shards, and Cross Slash spends them on stronger hits. The faster your cooldowns come back, the smoother the loop gets.
Wolf form is the default almost all the time. If Rage runs out too fast, players suggest stepping into Bear form briefly to refill it, then returning to the wolf.
Passives and Ascendancy
On the passive tree, take nodes that speed up attacks, give you Rage tools and keep freezes consistent. The exact order is easier to plan in a tree planner for your own version, but the principle is simple: speed and hit rate first, then cold damage and resources.
According to player reports, the Oracle ascendancy offers cold scaling and ice shard options that fit the werewolf well. Ascendancy points come from Ascension Trials: the Trial of the Sekhemas and, since patch 0.3.0, the Trial of Chaos.
If you lack the time or patience for them, a booster can handle part of the work, but it is still best to decide on your node order in advance.
Gear for the Start
Expensive items are not needed early on: while you play around Pounce, Lunar Assault and Herald of Ice, even simple upgrades give a noticeable boost.

The best early find is the unique ring Polcirkeln. It is a Sapphire Ring with a level 12 requirement: chilled enemies shatter as though they were frozen, and your cold damage goes up. Paired with Herald of Ice, it works well on packs.
For weapons, take the fastest one available. Shards build up with your hits, so a fast weapon speeds up both clearing and boss fights. Later you can look for items with cold damage bonuses and shapeshifting skills.
To keep up with gear through the campaign, Leveling Gear helps. For basic upgrades you will use currency such as Artificer’s Orb and Essences. Even simple crafts for attack speed and cold damage make the build feel much better.
Stat Priority
When upgrading items, follow this order:
Cooldown Recovery Rate - shortens the gaps between Lunar Blessing windows.
Attack Speed - speeds up shard generation and clearing.
Cold Damage - boosts hits, freezes and Herald of Ice explosions.
Shapeshifting Skill Damage - strengthens the core werewolf abilities.
Rage Generation - lengthens Lunar Blessing.
Life - a safety net during fast movement.
Elemental Resistances - up to the 75% cap, for smooth acts and early maps.
This list reflects the general logic of the build rather than a strict rule. If your Life or resistances are low, fix them first and chase damage afterwards.
Practical Tips
The werewolf rewards aggression. Replace plain running with Pounce whenever you can: the jump moves you to the next pack and keeps the Herald of Ice freeze cycle going.

Use Lunar Blessing when your Rage is almost full. That way the buff window lasts longer on bosses. On dense packs, open with Lunar Assault to freeze enemies and prepare shards for Cross Slash. On big targets, switch to Rake, Lunar Assault, Cross Slash.
Avoid standing still in human form without a reason, since almost every key action works better in transformation. Before pushing Maps, check your resistances and movement speed.
If you want a fast entry into the game, Power Leveling or Campaign Boost can take your character through the campaign so you start mapping right away. A build tailored to your goals can be made with Custom Build, and a finished setup can be reviewed with Build Check or upgraded through Improve Build.
