TBC Anniversary Phase 3 Best Gear: Sources and Priorities

Black Temple and Mount Hyjal are the main sources of top-end equipment in Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary Phase 3. They do not make every older item obsolete. A useful shopping list starts with your specialization, current set bonuses and raid assignment, then identifies the upgrades that change how well you perform that job.

Checked on October 20, 2026. Both raids opened on August 27 at 3:00 p.m. PDT, or 22:00 UTC. Arena Season 3 followed with regional weekly resets starting September 1. This guide covers the live Anniversary Tier 6 gearing environment. The Zul'Aman update announced for October 22 is discussed separately because its catch-up changes are not yet live on the check date.

BiS means best in slot within a particular complete setup. Near-BiS means a strong alternative with a small or conditional loss. Neither label guarantees the best immediate upgrade for your character. Losing a useful set bonus or dropping below the hit requirement of your build can make a higher-level item a downgrade.

TBC Anniversary Phase 3 Best Gear: Sources and Priorities

Choose raid targets and accessible alternatives together; a raid drop is never guaranteed.

Black Temple is in Shadowmoon Valley; Hyjal Summit, also called The Battle for Mount Hyjal, is reached through the Caverns of Time in Tanaris. Both are level-70 raids for 25 players. Their separate weekly lockouts make it practical to progress in both during the same week.

Attunement before the October update

On the check date, Hyjal and Black Temple still require attunement. Hyjal uses The Vials of Eternity, involving Lady Vashj and Kael'thas. Black Temple has its own chain, including progress through earlier raids. Completed raid attunements are account-wide in Anniversary; check access on an alt before repeating the process.

SSC and Tempest Keep entry requirements were removed when Phase 3 opened, with direct access to Vashj and Kael'thas permitted. That helps finish older targets and Hyjal attunement, but does not itself unlock Black Temple. Blizzard has announced removal of both Tier 6 raid attunements with the October 22 update. Treat that as a forthcoming change until it takes effect.

Tier 6 slots and tokens

The Phase 3 set has five available slots. Gloves come from Azgalor and the helm from Archimonde in Hyjal. Mother Shahraz drops shoulders, the Illidari Council drops legs and Illidan drops the chest in Black Temple. Tier 6 bracers, belts and boots belong to later Sunwell content, not this phase's token plan.

Forgotten Protector

Exchange tokens with Tydormu near the Hyjal entrance and check the role-specific version before buying. The important thresholds are two and four pieces. A fifth piece is not automatically better than an excellent off-set item. Blizzard added extra tier token drops for the Anniversary raid launch; this improves supply without guaranteeing your token family each week.

Plan the transition as a group of items. If one new piece breaks four-piece Tier 5 without completing a valuable Tier 6 bonus, keep it in your bags until the next piece arrives. Arcane Mage is a clear exception to a blanket Tier 6 upgrade rule: Tier 5 remains central to strong Phase 3 setups. Restoration Shaman, by contrast, has a directly useful Tier 6 two-piece bonus reducing Chain Heal's mana cost by 10%.

Black Temple or Hyjal first

Run the raid your group can reliably clear while maintaining targets in both. The final boss may hold your ideal weapon, but repeatable earlier kills can improve several slots sooner.

TBC Anniversary Phase 3 Best Gear: Sources and Priorities

Black Temple supplies three Tier 6 slots; Hyjal supplies two and has important weapons of its own.

Black Temple targets by role

Illidan's The Skull of Gul'dan is a major caster damage target, while Memento of Tyrande is a healer trinket to evaluate for throughput and mana needs. Crystal Spire of Karabor is an aspirational healing weapon. These share a late-raid bottleneck; keep a working weapon and trinket combination while waiting.

For physical damage, Warglaives of Azzinoth are long-term Rogue and Warrior targets, not a universal melee recommendation. A complete pair, weapon talents and the rest of the setup matter. Hunters should evaluate Black Bow of the Betrayer; Retribution Paladins should compare Torch of the Damned from Reliquary of Souls with their alternatives. One weapon list cannot serve all three characters.

Bulwark of Azzinoth is an important shield target for shield tanks, but does nothing for a bear. Gurtogg Bloodboil's Shadowmoon Insignia is a defensive trinket option rather than an automatic threat upgrade. Retain a survival configuration and a threat configuration instead of trying to solve every encounter with one set.

Earlier targets include Shadowmoon Destroyer's Drape from Teron Gorefiend for physical builds and Ring of Ancient Knowledge from raid trash for casters. Trash loot is still random: being obtainable before Illidan does not make it a quick guaranteed purchase.

Hyjal targets that deserve their own raid night

Archimonde offers Tempest of Chaos for eligible spell-damage sword users, Cataclysm's Edge for appropriate two-handed builds and Bristleblitz Striker for Hunters. Compare the bow with your complete ranged setup rather than assuming Black Temple wins every weapon slot.

Useful intermediate targets include Cuffs of Devastation from Rage Winterchill, Hammer of Atonement from Kaz'rogal and Hammer of Judgement from trash for a Protection Paladin's spell-damage weapon setup. These are distinct sources and purposes, not interchangeable claims of universal BiS.

The Scale of the Sands reputation ring is another reason to keep running Hyjal. Select the path for your role and follow its quest and reputation upgrades. The final Band of the Eternal variant is a progression reward, not an immediate pre-raid ring.

Priorities by role

Damage dealers

For melee, verify weapon type, speed, hit and expertise alongside set bonuses. A Rogue's weapon talents can change the value of an otherwise attractive drop. For a Hunter, evaluate the ranged weapon and pet contribution within the actual specialization. For casters, count hit from talents and the buffs your raid actually provides before replacing a hit item with haste or critical strike.

Do not borrow another specialization's complete list because both characters wear cloth or leather. Fire and Arcane Mage do not value every set transition equally; a Feral cat and a Feral tank need different defensive trade-offs. Compare the complete proposed equipment in an appropriate simulator, with your real gems, enchants and raid assumptions.

Tanks

First meet the defensive requirements of your assignment. Then add threat without creating a dangerous gap in survival. Armor, health, avoidance, critical-hit protection and, where applicable, block coverage interact differently for Warriors, Paladins and Druids. Resilience can help against critical hits but does not replace a shield tank's solution to crushing blows.

Feral tanks can deliberately use Vindicator's Dragonhide pieces as efficient critical-hit-protection swaps. A raid item with stronger individual offensive stats can still produce a worse complete tank set. Protection Paladins must also preserve spell damage for threat; ordinary physical tank weapon rankings are insufficient.

Ask the raid leader about specialist resistance equipment before spending. Black Temple progression can require dedicated sets for assigned jobs. Such pieces should be planned separately from the normal boss-tanking set, with requirements agreed by the group.

Healers

Separate healing output from mana sustainability. A long progression pull and a short farm kill can favor different trinkets. Check which spells your set bonus improves: a bonus to a rarely cast spell is not a reason to abandon strong off-set pieces.

Do not automatically replace every item with spirit, mp5 or spell critical strike according to one generic healer priority. Class mechanics, healing assignment and fight duration determine the result. Keep older mana tools until the new configuration works across a full raid evening.

Older gear worth retaining

Arcane Mages should preserve useful Tier 5 combinations. Belt of One-Hundred Deaths from Lady Vashj remains a serious Feral target, including for threat-oriented bear setups. Dragonspine Trophy from Gruul is an older physical damage trinket that can remain highly competitive; it is not new Phase 3 loot and has not become a badge purchase.

A strong older weapon, cloak or ring is also a valid bridge when its replacement needs a late boss. The question is whether the new item improves your actual set enough to justify the time and cost. Do not discard an old hit piece or defensive ring immediately: it may be needed after the next upgrade changes your stat balance.

Relics deserve the same treatment. Libram of Repentance costs 15 Badges of Justice and supports a Protection Paladin's Holy Shield block coverage. Idol of the Raven Goddess comes from the Druid Swift Flight Form quest chain and can serve a group-oriented purpose. Totem of Healing Rains from Maiden of Virtue supports Chain Heal. A newer relic is not automatically better when it affects a spell you seldom use.

Accessible upgrades outside Tier 6 raids

Crafting and reputation

Bracers of Nimble Thought for spell damage and Swiftheal Wraps for healing are useful examples of Phase 3 tailored upgrades. Heart of Darkness links much of this crafting to raid supply, so crafted does not mean cheap. These tradable bracers can be commissioned; check the binding and profession requirements of other recipes individually.

Ashtongue Deathsworn reputation in Black Temple unlocks class-specific trinkets at Exalted and crafting patterns at earlier standings. Their value depends on the class effect; they are not nine equally strong replacements for raid trinkets. Keep older reputations on the plan for missing starter items and head or shoulder enchants. Netherwing progression primarily offers mounts rather than a core BiS gearing path.

Epic gems are available in Phase 3, including Hyjal mining at skill 375 and Black Temple drops. Use affordable rare gems in temporary gear when the improvement is small; reserve expensive cuts for pieces likely to remain equipped.

Badges and PvP

Existing badge items still solve practical gaps. Icon of the Silver Crescent, Essence of the Martyr and Bloodlust Brooch each cost 41 Badges of Justice and serve caster damage, healing and physical damage respectively. Choose according to your missing slot and existing trinkets, rather than buying all three.

Season 3 PvP equipment is a parallel route, especially for selected weapons and Feral defensive pieces. Arena rewards require the relevant currency and any applicable rating; honor equipment has its own costs. A PvP item may be excellent for a particular set, but resilience-heavy armor is not a universal substitute for PvE damage stats.

What changes on October 22

Blizzard's announced Zul'Aman update adds stronger G'eras rewards and more badge sources across earlier raids and world bosses. It also removes Hyjal and Black Temple attunements, makes Primal Nether and Nether Vortex tradable and changes Outland world-boss loot to Bind on Equip. On October 20 these are announced future changes. Do not budget against the expanded vendor as though it already exists, and recheck the live vendor if publishing after the update.

What to farm first

Start by inspecting every slot for missing enchants, gems and role requirements. Close cheap gaps through quests, dungeons, reputations and the existing badge vendor. A complete, coherent starter set is more useful than one expensive item surrounded by neglected pieces.

Next, choose a small number of raid targets: a weapon, a meaningful set threshold and a scarce trinket are useful categories. Add an accessible alternative to each. Bracers, belts and some cloaks often have crafted or PvP options; final-boss weapons and trinkets are harder to replace. This is a planning distinction, not a promise that every armor slot is easy.

For a raid-ready character, spend lockouts on Black Temple and Hyjal while revisiting SSC, Tempest Keep or Gruul only for specific retained targets. For a fresh level 70, prioritize reliable preparation and access before an aspirational Illidan wishlist. Keep enough gold for consumables and enchants so that a new drop is usable immediately.

Fix immediate weaknesses first, then spend weekly raid opportunities on the upgrades with the fewest alternatives.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need full Tier 6 before entering Black Temple?

No. Tier 6 is earned inside these raids. Bring a suitable earlier set, the required access on the current date and the equipment your assignment needs.

Should I replace every Phase 2 item?

No. Retain strong set bonuses and specialist pieces. Arcane Mage Tier 5 and Feral use of Belt of One-Hundred Deaths are clear examples.

Can I get a useful upgrade without killing Illidan?

Yes. Earlier raid bosses, trash, crafting, existing badges and selected PvP items provide alternatives. Compare them with the gap in your current set.

Should I save badges for the October update?

If your current set already handles your content, saving is reasonable. If a current purchase fixes an important weakness now, weigh that immediate benefit against the announced expanded vendor.
