What are Division 2 Exotics?
In Division 2, exotics represent powerful items of the highest rarity tier that stand out thanks to their unique talents and attributes. What makes an exotic item good in The Division 2 are its exotic talent and utility. Let's dive in just a little bit.

Division 2 Exotic Talents
Each exotic item in the game has its own exotic talent. This exotic talent rolls with the same values for every player in the game. The only difference between 2 exotic items of the same type is their attributes' values.

Below, we compare 2x St Elmo's Engine to showcase that they both share the same talent that reads exactly the same, the only difference between them being the 3rd attribute and the attributes' values:

  • different exotics same attributes

  • different exotics same talent

An exotic item's talent can only be found on that type of item. For example, you will never see an exotic mask rolled with a talent belonging to the holster type of item. Also, exotic talents cannot be rerolled!

This is pretty much everything you should know about exotic talents. Moving on, let's check out what types of exotics can be found in TD2. Sounds good, right?

Types of Division 2 Exotic Items
Division 2 has two main types of exotics: exotic weapons and exotic armor. These are also divided into multiple categories; to make things easier to understand, we'll briefly present all of them.

Division 2 Exotic Weapons
There are seven types of Weapon Exotics in The Division 2:

  • Exotic Assault Rifles (AR)

  • Exotic Sub Machine Guns (SMG)

  • Exotic Light Machineguns (LMG)

  • Exotic Rifles

  • Exotic Shotguns

  • Exotic Marksman Rifles (Snipers)

  • Exotic Pistols (Sidearms)

Division 2 Exotic Armor (Gear)
Also, there are six types of Armor Exotics in Division 2:

  • Exotic Masks

  • Exotic Backpacks

  • Exotic Chests

  • Exotic Gloves

  • Exotic Kneepads

  • Exotic Holsters

That's all for now; we won't go into details at this point. Later in the guide, we'll dive deep into every Division 2 exotic weapon and armor, rank them, and see which are the best exotics per type, slot, and activity.

How many Exotics are in The Division 2?
When the vanilla game was released, there were just a few exotic items you could get, and they were extremely rare. In recent years, the game has received major content updates, all bringing additional exotics, whether via the WONY expansion, new seasons, new activities such as the Dark Hours and Iron Horse raids, The Summit, Descent, and the Paradise Lost incursion.

Just to give you an idea of what to expect in the future, each season usually brings two new exotics available through the season track, while activities such as incursions or new game modes only one, collectible as a random drop (like Ouroboros Exotic SMG) or guaranteed purchase from a vendor (such as Vindicator Exotic Rifle) in exchange for some currency.

Right now, in Year 7 Season 1 (2025), there are 58 exotics in The Division 2. However, expect some serious grinding and time investment, especially if you want to collect all of them!

How many Exotics can you equip in Division 2?
So we do have an amazing exotics pool to choose from and create various builds for our characters, but, unfortunately, there are some limitations on the number of exotic items you can simultaneously equip in The Division 2.

Here's how it goes: you can only equip one exotic weapon and one exotic armor simultaneously, meaning you cannot use more than two exotics, 2x exotic guns or 2x exotic armors in the same loadout, not even if they are different weapon/armor types!

So you cannot equip, let's say, two exotic assault rifles (same weapon class) but neither one exotic assault rifle and one exotic pistol (different weapon classes). It goes exactly the same with exotic armor.

You can carry all 58 Division 2 exotics in your inventory, but you can only use one exotic weapon and one exotic armor as active exotics at any moment.

Where can you get Exotics from in Division 2?
In Division 2 in 2025, you can get exotic items by:

  • Using the targeted loot feature in Countdown, The Summit, or open-world activities

  • Completing weekly projects such as The Summit, SHD Requisition, Weekly Legendary Stronghold, etc

  • Purchasing exotic caches from the DZ, Global Event, Descent, and Countdown Vendors

  • Completing Season tracks

  • Completing Global Event challenges

  • Completing the raids and the incursion

  • Obtaining them as random drops while killing enemies

It's very important to mention that in The Division 2, exotic items have various drop locations and drop chances: some can be target-farmed, others are random drops via exotic caches or mob drops, and others are guaranteed rewards for completing different activities.

Note: Opening an exotic cache guarantees you are getting an exotic item, but the item itself will be random.

We'll mainly focus on getting specific exotics so you will know precisely how to get every exotic item in Division2. In the next section, we'll briefly present the different drop locations and drop chances when targeting specific Division 2 exotics, not just random drops.

Division 2 Exotics drop locations
In The Division 2, you can target-farm and get specific exotics from:

  • Raids: Eagle Bearer, St Elmo's Engine, The Bighorn

Division 2 Exotic Weapons & Armor Meta 2025
To build your character around exotics, here's the current meta overview:

  • St Elmo's Engine is the best assault rifle and overall best exotic weapon. Its unique electric bolts talent excels in PvE crowd control.

  • Memento backpack leads exotic armor due to its utility and damage bonuses.

  • Ouroboros SMG offers high damage and utility for PvP and PvE.

  • Pestilence LMG provides superior sustained fire and crowd damage.

  • Diamondback rifle is favored for precision and sniper hybrid builds.

  • Scorpio shotgun is the go-to for close-quarters combat.

  • Mantis marksman rifle has high burst damage for long-range engagements.

  • Regulus pistol is a reliable sidearm for backup damage.

  • Coyote’s Mask is the most versatile exotic mask, especially for DPS builds.

  • Tardigrade chest offers survivability and healing bonuses.

  • BTSU Datagloves increase critical hit chance and skill damage.

  • Sawyer's Kneepads improve skill cooldowns and damage.

  • Dodge City Holster enhances weapon handling and reload speed.

Crafting, Rerolling & Optimizing Exotics
Exotic items cannot have their talents rerolled; however, their attributes and perks can be rerolled by using the crafting bench and resources. Optimizing exotics involves focusing on beneficial attributes such as weapon damage, skill power, critical hit chance, and more depending on your build.

Remember, crafting materials for rerolls can be scarce, so choose wisely which exotic to invest resources in.

Upgrading Your Exotics
Upgrading exotics increases their item level (Expertise), enhancing their attributes and overall performance. Expertise increases by using higher-level materials and blueprints at the crafting bench. Aim to keep your exotic gear at the highest possible item level to maximize effectiveness.
