The First Descendant Gluttony Guide: Cooling and Frenzy

Gluttony tests more than damage: you must switch priorities to the mechanic. While part of the group attacks, its energy accumulation needs management through Impurities. During Frenzy, the priority changes again: ordinary attacks do not replace handling dangerous spheres and explosions.

This older Colossus received substantial difficulty reductions after release. Solo entry is available, and the former Hard Intercept now belongs to Extreme. Launch advice about four compulsory players, old entry thresholds and an invariably required Ultimate Valby should therefore not be treated as current rules.

The sections below cover group tactics: preparation, shared responsibilities, the normal phase and Frenzy. For a first reliable clear, a surviving build and an invested weapon matter more than maximum damage without arena control. Solo is a separate launch option; the role assignments and group sequence described here do not apply to it.

Access and preparation

The Intercept changes renamed Hard difficulty to Extreme. General access to that branch involves finishing Fortress Main Quests and Colossus of Another Level; check the Intercept screen for Gluttony's specific availability and preceding progression.

Before entry, inspect the boss card for recommended statistics, resistances and body parts. Do not build a team on the assumption that an icy appearance means everyone should use one element. Resistance to incoming damage and the favorable outgoing attack type are different questions.

Begin defense with Increased HP and appropriate External Components. Add resistance or extra protection according to the actual cause of death. Choose an HP reserve around the attacks you actually need to survive: repeated hits and a missed mechanic call for different corrections.

Normal phase: damage and energy control

Gluttony uses mining devices and discharges Impurities. Direct the light-colored spheres toward the boss to interfere with dangerous energy accumulation. Shoot them from a position that sends them in the desired direction: stand behind a sphere relative to its destination rather than off to the side without a useful path.

Do not wait for the limit before starting cooling. Regularly inspect accumulation on the boss and deliver Impurities proactively. After the difficulty reductions, Impurities are drawn to Gluttony within 15 m; reaching that area matters more than following each sphere with endless shooting.

The player currently drawing the boss's attention should consider its movement direction as well. Erratic kiting disrupts sphere routes and forces everyone to reposition. Move for safety, but try to preserve predictable space for the mechanic.

Agree on primary control and backup before entering as a group. Exactly one person always handling everything is too rigid: the task changes with damage pace, movement and mistakes. If the primary player is downed, others should immediately understand that their priority has temporarily changed.

Recognizing dangerous Unstable Energy

Purple spheres are Unstable Energy. They are not ordinary cooling material. Absorbing that energy increases the dangerous Wipe Attack gauge, so sending every sphere directly into the boss is not a correct general strategy.

Light Impurities and purple Unstable Energy serve different parts of the fight. Identify the object and phase before shooting. If random fire repeatedly produces the wrong result, temporarily reduce personal DPS and restore control: another brief attack window will not compensate for a failed mechanic.

Do not remain in a dangerous attack line for one sphere. Survive the directed attack first, then continue from a better position. Repeated knockdowns remove control and increase the time allies spend rescuing you.

Frenzy: prioritize explosions near the boss

During Frenzy, the group uses linked light Impurities and purple Unstable Energy. An energy tether connects the light spheres to the purple ones. Shoot the light part of the grouping toward Gluttony to draw the linked purple energy into position.

Wait until the linked objects are close to the boss, then shoot the purple sphere so its detonation explodes the attached light spheres near Gluttony. Do not let the spheres simply disappear into the boss before detonation. Destroying an isolated purple sphere and completing the prepared linked explosion are different actions. The former prevents its absorption but does not replace the group mechanic.

Purple spheres can chain-detonate. Before shooting, check which objects are linked and where the explosion will occur; random fire can consume prepared spheres far from the target.

If timing is unclear, avoid firing randomly across the whole arena. Follow one understandable group of objects and observe its explosion result. This makes insufficient impact easier to distinguish from incorrect distance and avoids wasting the available objects.

After Frenzy ends, resume normal roles: recover resources, check energy control and then use the safe attack window. Do not spend your entire main burst before the target is convenient for the setup again.

Parts, grappling and damage windows

Attack available Weak Points and remove prepared parts when doing so creates groggy and a calmer window. Part removal is more useful than random body fire when the team is ready to capitalize on the interruption.

However, grappling cannot be promised to interrupt every animation. Gluttony has Daze restrictions while summoning mining devices. Do not make the team's entire defense depend on canceling that mechanic with a last-second part removal.

During a prepared window, damage characters use their main cycle while everyone maintains awareness of the arena. Do not leave sphere control without backup merely because an attractive opportunity for large damage numbers appears.

Is Ultimate Valby required?

No. Old instructions frequently depended on the previous Spiral Tidal Wave and its special projectile. Valby's rework changed that skill and removed the old projectile. That route therefore cannot automatically be transferred to a current setup.

Choose a character you can reliably survive and execute the mechanic with, or a coordinated support for your group. One specialized old build should not be treated as an entry requirement for every participant.

For a group clear, choose a position that lets you help the mechanic and return to firing. If time is insufficient, examine attack time lost to knockdowns and unnecessary movement. Then change one part of the build or responsibility assignment.

Why attempts fail

  • The whole squad attacks the boss and notices dangerous accumulation too late.

  • Players confuse light Impurities with purple Unstable Energy.

  • Frenzy explosions occur far from Gluttony.

  • The boss repeatedly leaves prepared sphere routes.

  • Nobody takes over after the mechanic player is downed.

  • An old setup is copied without checking changed skills.

After a loss, select one cause to address next. For control problems, clarify responsibilities; for survival, improve defenses; for damage, inspect realizable windows. Changing every item and tactic simultaneously makes it harder to identify what helped.

Frequently asked questions

Can Gluttony be cleared solo?

Solo entry has been available since update 1.2.2. This guide covers group play; its responsibility assignments and linked-sphere sequence are not a solo walkthrough.

Should I shoot every sphere?

No. Distinguish Impurities from Unstable Energy first, then consider the phase and object placement.

Is a particular character compulsory?

No. A functional build and mechanic execution matter. The old Valby route is not a universal rule.

Are the rewards unchanged since release?

Intercept tables have changed. Inspect current rewards rather than automatically repeating old Peace Maker guarantees or pattern chances.
