WoT Ranked Battles: What Changed and How to Prepare for Onslaught

ByTimodeus

If you are searching for Ranked Battles in World of Tanks, first clarify the mode name. Wargaming discontinued the former Ranked Battles with Update 1.21.1 in July 2023. Its interface and Leaderboard were disabled; instructions to “start a new Ranked 2026 season” are misleading.

The competitive successor is Onslaught, featuring 7v7 battles, its own rating, Role Skills, and Tactical Skills. It operates in seasons, making a particular launch's conditions more relevant than an old chevron table. At the verification point, the announced first Year of the Phoenix season already has a completed published calendar; future dates are not invented here.

This guide prepares you for that format through role selection, equipment and crew, positioning, and expenses. Seasonal examples refer to Azure Phoenix in 2026. This is Wargaming's PC World of Tanks, without importing Lesta, Blitz, or console rules.

What changed after Ranked Battles

Onslaught is not simply a new name for the old chevron ladder. It features pre-battle composition preparation, special Points of Interest, Role Skills, and rating-based matchmaking. Old advice about retaining a chevron through personal placement on a defeated team therefore cannot be treated as the current progression system.

Fireborn with a progressive 3D style in official Wargaming Year of the Phoenix artwork

Fireborn is an annual reward in the 2026-2027 Phoenix cycle rather than an automatic one-battle prize. Official Wargaming artwork; appearance does not establish battle parameters.

Rating Points determine movement through ranks: victories help progression, while defeats and other defined cases can remove points. Prestige Points concern in-battle actions and charging a Role Skill. These are different measures; personal damage does not promise a fixed rating gain.

The general ranks are Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Champion, and Legend. Initial Qualification and the following ladder use their season's conditions. Do not promise yourself a particular rank solely from Random Battle statistics, or substitute Onslaught Light for the ranked format: Light does not share that rating progression.

The 2026-2027 Year of the Phoenix spans three seasons, with Fireborn as an annual progression reward. Playing one battle or receiving a rental does not automatically grant that vehicle.

Checking the season and vehicle eligibility

The official guide's base format is 7v7 in eligible Tier X vehicles, excluding SPGs. A researched Tier XI may qualify you for seasonal rentals without automatically making that Tier XI eligible for battle. The mode's vehicle pool and launch restrictions determine actual availability.

For the Season of the Azure Phoenix, the official EU table gives September 2, 2026 at 02:30 UTC+2 through October 11 at 03:00 UTC+2. In UTC, that is September 2 at 00:30 through October 11 at 01:00. This is a completed seasonal example rather than a promise of an open queue afterward. A future launch must come from a new announcement rather than extrapolating the calendar.

That season's prepared rentals included Centurion Action X, E 100, and T110E3 with predefined crews, equipment, ammunition, and consumables. Vz. 60S Dravec was excluded. Super Platoons were disabled, so an older general rule about seven-player groups did not authorize that formation in Azure Phoenix.

Before a session, select several mastered eligible vehicles with different tasks. Pre-battle preparation lets you change vehicle and configuration after the map loads. If vehicle bans or a seasonal selection stage apply, account for them before confirming the final composition.

Four roles: contributing to the team

In a small team, losing one gun has a greater effect on available angles and tempo. Choose a vehicle in which you can repeat a useful action rather than comfortably farm after a flank loses. A composition needs compatible tasks rather than seven identical favorites.

Class

Useful task

Role mistake

Medium

Crossfire, support, and timely changes of direction

Treating mobility as permission to leave the team without a specific firing lane

Heavy

Pressure from cover, passage control, and hit points for the next exchange

Spending the entire reserve in first contact or blocking allies at a corner

Light

Observation and information where allies can actually shoot

Copying a Random Battle route without accounting for smaller teams and seasonal vision

TD

A prepared firing angle supporting active contact

Remaining deep in the rear without targets while the team fights one gun short

The vehicle's official role also determines its Role Skill. Charge it through useful actions, then select activation timing for the team's task. A full charge does not require waiting for a perfect scene while an ally loses a position; premature activation without a useful effect is equally poor.

Equipment and crew without universal templates

Stabilizer and Ventilation are not a mandatory shared setup for all four classes. A turret does not guarantee Stabilizer availability, Ventilation needs compatible enclosed vehicles, and a magazine may exclude a Rammer. Start with a clear purpose and compare the final configuration before purchase.

Task and compatible vehicle

Starting triple

What to assess

Cyclic medium with Stabilizer access

Stabilizer + Rammer + Optics

Whether independent vision is needed; compare Optics against Ventilation or Turbo for another task

Cyclic heavy with Stabilizer access

Rammer + Stabilizer + Improved Hardening

Keeping gun and suspension active under pressure; substitutions should solve a defined problem

Light for separate observation

Optics + Low Noise Exhaust System + Commander’s Vision System

Item eligibility, seasonal parameters, and the team’s ability to use information

TD with a compatible cyclic gun

Rammer + Improved Aiming + Turbocharger

Firing access and relocation; do not add a Stabilizer merely from habit

Compatible magazine medium

Stabilizer + Ventilation + Turbocharger

Series timing and magazine-reload retreat; Optics instead of Turbo when vision is needed

For preconfigured rentals, first learn the supplied setup and available settings. Do not assume it duplicates your own vehicle or retains its crew's perks. Map and composition help select an option without making one triple automatically superior.

Brothers in Arms improves crew efficiency. Snap Shot and Smooth Ride address different dispersion conditions, while Recon and Situational Awareness help vision. Repairs matters in close combat; Concealment helps a hidden role. Train group perks across the crew, accounting for combined qualifications.

Select Firefighting around actual fires and replacing an extinguisher with food rather than a promise that ignition disappears. After reassignment, check the actual specialists' training: expensive equipment cannot compensate for a misassigned crew.

Positions, Points of Interest, and night vision

An opening plan should connect base control, available lanes, and support direction. A crossfire helps when allies can still hold the other angle. Traveling too far away and leaving all incoming fire to them is not the same as creating a working crossfire.

Points of Interest provide a Tactical Skill, but capture requires time and safe contact. Do not chase a point if it costs a gun or decisive passage. Prepare covering fire, then determine which engagement the gained ability should change.

Azure Phoenix replaced daytime Glacier, Sand River, Outpost, and Steppes with night versions. Released 2.4 notes list maximum view range of 315 meters, draw distance of 445 meters, and +15% stationary and moving concealment there. These are special conditions for those night maps rather than a new general Random Battle rule.

The Observation Post provided an Illumination Flare, spotting opponents in a chosen area and increasing their incoming damage. The updated seasonal announcement gives a post-adjustment duration of 20 seconds and +10% damage. Do not reuse the launch material's 25 seconds as an unchanging value.

Coordinate activation with allied readiness to fire. Detection does not itself destroy the target, and increased damage does not replace hitting and penetrating. Watch whether your own vehicle remains exposed while your attention is on the tactical map.

Economy and recovery in battle

Choose ammunition for likely armor and available penetration zones. A more expensive shell helps when it changes the probability of a successful shot without fixing a blocked lane or missing aim. Do not budget around “special shells all battle” or “never spend credits.”

Repair Kits, First Aid Kits, and extinguishers are ordinary consumables that become available again after cooldown. The Field Repair Role Skill is a separate mode ability rather than another purchased Repair Kit. Learn its purpose for the selected role instead of replacing the description with a familiar Garage icon.

Food is resupplied every battle and needs a budget; it helps through crew efficiency rather than an identical percentage improvement to all final parameters. Compare ammunition, consumables, and repair costs against how consistently a configuration lets you perform the task.

A short session and error review

  1. Before entering, check the available season, vehicles, configurations, and resupply reserves.

  2. Select a clear role and backup rather than changing vehicles after every defeat without a reason.

  3. Before contact, identify the next useful shot, reload cover, and allied support.

  4. After battle, assess team result, your task, and expenses separately.

  5. In a replay, find one loss of tempo: a late retreat, empty flank, unplanned series, or ineffective ability.

A vehicle purchase or service advertised alongside a guide cannot guarantee rating growth. Consistency begins with repeatable decisions: preserving a needed gun, reaching a shared engagement on time, and activating a skill when the team can exploit its effect.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play the old Ranked Battles?

The mode was discontinued with Update 1.21.1. Wargaming uses Onslaught for seasonal ranked competition; do not search for the old chevron interface as a live queue.

Will any Tier X or XI work?

No. Base Onslaught uses eligible Tier X vehicles without SPGs, with seasonal exclusions. Rental eligibility through a researched X or XI is not general permission to play Tier XI.

Are Stabilizer and Ventilation mandatory?

No. Account for availability, gun, and role. This guide provides separate medium, heavy, light, TD, and magazine options as starting points for compatible vehicles.

Do Random Battle vision tips apply?

General cover and support principles help, but a season may change parameters. Azure Phoenix night maps had different vision and draw limits, while the flare created a special spotting window. One general preset cannot be transferred to every condition.
