Best World of Tanks Vehicles: Choose by Class and Role
The best World of Tanks vehicle is one whose strengths you can use in the intended mode. Random Battles demand more than potential damage: a vehicle needs useful positions, the ability to survive return fire and opportunities to influence the next part of the map.
This selection covers Wargaming's World of Tanks on PC. The main comparison concerns Tier X, with separate Tier VIII Premium choices and one Tier IX reference. Tier XI already exists, so these tables should not be treated as a complete ranking of all high-tier vehicles.
Recommendations consider role, positional demands and damage delivery. Letters express editorial priority within this selection, rather than official win-rate statistics, tournament eligibility or promised results. Find your scenario first, then compare vehicles within it.
How to read the selection and choose a tank
A means a vehicle deserves early consideration for the stated task. B means a useful alternative with a more pronounced dependence on position, preparation or style. Entries within a group are not ordered by a hidden win percentage. Additional options expand the choice; reward vehicles sit separately because access conditions matter.
There is no universal S category here. A positional vehicle can excel on a ridge yet contribute little when the battle demands an urgent rotation. Compare five things: preparing shots, applying armor, relocating, contributing vision and the cost of a mistake. Do not turn these properties into an invented numerical ranking.
Account for the mode. Team composition, vehicle availability and special mechanics can change a tank's value. A Random Battle choice does not automatically transfer to Onslaught or a clan assignment. For organized play, obtain the commander's role requirements before choosing a vehicle.
Tier X heavy tanks
Choose between holding a position and advancing. A heavy needs more than frontal armor: assess which hull and turret sections you must reveal to fire, and how many guns can respond. The following table retains both researchable and reward choices.
Vehicle | Criteria-based choice | When to consider it and what to check |
|---|---|---|
T95/FV4201 Chieftain | Reward candidate | Turret and terrain play. Consider it when you have access and know how to hide the hull; the name does not make a position impenetrable. |
Object 279 early | Reward candidate | Learning an unusual hull and incoming firing angles. Do not use its armored reputation as a reason to push several guns alone. |
Super Conqueror | A: positional | For sustained turret-based play. Plan hull cover and a retreat window instead of expecting to win every frontal trade. |
Kranvagn | A: specialized | For terrain and autoloader attacks. Plan reload cover and avoid emptying the magazine when that would leave you unsupported. |
Vz. 55 | A: burst attack | With the autoloader gun selected, useful for a short exposure and a burst. Count potential return fire as well as your own damage before committing. |
Object 277 | A: rotations | A candidate for a mobile heavy group. Reaching a position quickly matters when allies can support it rather than remaining far behind. |
IS-7 | B: group pressure | Consider it for advancing with allies. Watch hull orientation: automatically angling every armor layout can expose a vulnerable section. |
E 100 | B: deliberate trades | For players willing to manage hull and turret angles between shots. Do not sit still expecting size and armor to replace timing. |
60TP Lewandowskiego | B: covered trades | A candidate for the heavy lane and prepared individual shots. Before exposing yourself, identify cover for the following reload. |
AMX M4 mle. 54 | B: positional alternative | Compare its gun choices with your style. Individual punch and firing comfort can favor different decisions; judge the selected configuration separately. |
T110E5 | Additional option | Consider it as an alternative for heavy-lane play. Test the visible turret sections and available retreat route when assessing a position. |
WZ-111 model 5A | Additional option | Consider it for a moving group. Begin a trade when allies are ready, rather than merely when your own gun is loaded. |
Compare the Super Conqueror and Kranvagn through terrain and firing rhythm, and the Object 277 through timely group movement. For the Vz. 55, explicitly record the installed gun. Assessing the autoloader through habits developed with a cyclic gun assumes that only the number of shots has changed.
The Chieftain and Object 279 early should not become mandatory beginner goals merely because of a place in someone else's ranking. Check the actual acquisition route and selected mode's rules first. A reward tank's reputation does not prove that it is currently sold or permitted in every competition.
Tier X medium tanks
For a medium, identify how you want to win a position: terrain, distance, rotation speed or a burst of shots. None of these approaches removes the need to watch the minimap and preserve health for the decisive stage.
Vehicle | Criteria-based choice | When to consider it and what to check |
|---|---|---|
Object 140 | A: versatile | A choice for rotations and repeated firing opportunities. Flexibility requires reading the map, rather than driving between flanks without a purpose. |
STB-1 | A: terrain | Hydropneumatic suspension helps exploit slopes. Check the actual hull position and available firing angle before committing to a ridge. |
Leopard 1 | A: fire support | A candidate for ranged fire and relocation. Find a lane where allies reveal targets and you can move before opponents close in. |
Progetto M40 mod. 65 | A: shell management | Autoreloading lets you choose between a single shot and a burst. Avoid automatically emptying the magazine; consider what remains for the next target. |
CS-63 | A: tempo and position | Use Rapid mode for movement and plan the transition to firing. Arriving early helps only when you can hold the position you reach. |
Object 430U | B: close support | A candidate for supporting the heavy lane. Compare the proposed trade with a conventional medium, without treating armor as an invitation to attack alone. |
UDES 15/16 | B: demanding terrain | Automatic suspension helps hide the hull. Turret orientation affects terrain use; check the angle at the actual position rather than relying on one Garage figure. |
Centurion Action X | B: positional support | A candidate for turret-based work at medium range. Avoid cresting entirely for a shot that could be prepared from a safer position. |
TVP T 50/51 | B: magazine execution | Useful for attacking during an enemy reload window. Count safe exposure time; the ability to fire a burst does not mean the enemy will let you finish it. |
M48A5 Patton | B: versatile alternative | Compare it with the Object 140 on the same task. Position comfort, prepared shots and a retreat route matter more than one successful battle. |
Bat.-Châtillon 25 t | Additional option | For players prepared to plan the magazine and withdrawal. Seek an isolated target or allied support; a full magazine does not replace a safe route. |
The Object 140 and STB-1 are not two versions of an identical role. For the STB-1, suspension behavior on the particular slope matters; for a versatile medium, the timing of the next move matters. Avoid transferring a maximum gun-depression figure from an old article without its activation and hull-position conditions.
The Leopard 1 does not require spending the whole battle near the base. Ranged support includes finding a fresh firing lane when the previous one stops working. With the Progetto 65, TVP and Bat.-Châtillon, define an exit before attacking. Fast burst damage matters when the vehicle remains in the battle afterward.
Light tanks: active routes or concealed positions
A scout's value depends on information the team can use. Early detection without an allied firing lane can deliver less than a cautious position with a follow-up. Before the opening route, check where your allies are actually going.

Wheeled scouting needs a controllable route and a planned exit. This official illustrative image does not show current vehicle statistics.
Vehicle | Criteria-based choice | When to consider it and what to check |
|---|---|---|
Panhard EBR 105 | A: active routes | Wheeled scouting with selectable driving modes. Choose the route exit before accelerating; speed guarantees neither detection nor survival. |
Manticore | A: concealed scouting | A candidate for exploiting its compact profile and concealment. The opening position should let allies fire and leave you an escape route. |
T-100 LT | A: flexible scouting | A candidate for combining scouting with relocation. Avoid accepting an early duel merely because the gun can deal return damage. |
AMX 13 105 | B: scouting and bursts | The autoloader helps finish targets or attack isolated opponents. Preserve the scout until reduced enemy vision opens the map. |
XM551 Sheridan | B: firepower alternative | Consider it when evaluating a scout with an additional firepower focus. Establish useful vision first; an opportunistic shot can reveal a valuable position. |
WZ-132-1 | B: hybrid task | Compare a scouting position with opportunities to support allies by fire. Additional damage potential is not permission to abandon vision work. |
Rheinmetall Panzerwagen | B: alternative scout | Choose it after testing comfortable routes and positions on familiar maps. Balance early reconnaissance against preserving health for the late game. |
T-54 ltwt. | Separate: Tier IX | A useful flexible-scout comparison, but not a Tier X ranking entry. Compare its results with Tier X only after accounting for tier and battle composition. |
The EBR 105 and Manticore represent different ways to work the map, rather than an unconditional winner and its replacement. Wheeled play particularly demands routing and control; concealed scouting needs allied firing lines and a way to avoid revealing the position. In urban battles, the job can shift toward watching crossings and helping in the closing stages.
Tank destroyers: pushing, holding or support
Begin by asking whether you are ready to manage a limited gun arc and change direction in advance. An armored TD with restricted traverse and a vehicle for ranged support require different attitudes toward the front line.
Vehicle | Criteria-based choice | When to consider it and what to check |
|---|---|---|
Object 268 Version 4 | A: supported pushes | Consider it for advancing with support. With a limited gun arc, watch the flanks in advance; frontal protection does not cover an encirclement. |
Strv 103B | A: prepared firing lane | Siege and Travel modes require planned relocation. Before settling, make sure the chosen lane will actually offer shots. |
FV217 Badger | A: lane holding | A candidate for sustained work on one lane. Check withdrawal and flank support; a strong firing position can become a trap when bypassed. |
Object 268 | B: prepared shots | Consider it for support at a chosen distance. Do not transfer Object 268 Version 4 habits automatically; these are different vehicles, not two names for one tank. |
Grille 15 | B: ranged support | A candidate for a firing position with cover and an exit. Avoid trading a safe lane for a close-range exchange merely because a target looks easy. |
Ho-Ri 3 | B: support and trades | Consider it for fire support from a preselected position. Following balance changes, check current parameters instead of relying on an old play pattern. |
Jagdpanzer E 100 | B: individual heavy shots | A candidate for patient covered trades. Avoid allowing opponents to circle while the gun is occupied with a different target. |
T110E3 | B: protected front | An armored TD without a rotating turret. Choose a lane you can hold with allies and avoid exposing the sides during a rushed turn. |
FV4005 Stage II | Additional option | For players accepting high risk for an individual shot result. Do not compare the best highlight with sustained usefulness over a complete session. |
Do not turn an assault label into an instruction to always lead. The Object 268 Version 4, Badger and T110E3 still need allies to prevent a flank. The Strv 103B requires planned mode changes; the Grille 15 needs a safe firing lane. Assess the Ho-Ri 3 after checking the branch's current balance changes.
Tier VIII Premium vehicles: income and crews
For earning credits, choose a tank in which you consistently deliver results after expenses. A Premium is not required to play. Buying an uncomfortable vehicle because of another person's ranking can work out worse than continuing with familiar equipment. Assess the role and your available budget first.
Vehicle | Criteria-based choice | When to consider it and what to check |
|---|---|---|
Progetto M35 mod. 46 | Autoreloading | For support with a choice between single fire and bursts. Managing loaded shells matters more than automatically emptying the magazine. |
Bat.-Châtillon Bourrasque | Short bursts | For players who can time an exposure and withdraw after the magazine. Misses and poor trades affect both the battle and net income. |
Panhard EBR 75 (FL 10) | Wheeled scouting | For players familiar with wheeled routes. Battle duration alone does not prove profitability; results and expenses matter. |
M54 Renegade (T54E2) | American heavy | Consider it for the role and a compatible crew. Before buying, compare nation, class and crew duties with the intended vehicle. |
CS-52 LIS | Polish medium | Consider it as a conventional single-shot alternative. It is not an autoloader; planning individual shots differs from the Bourrasque. |
Škoda T 56 | Czech heavy | A heavy-lane candidate with a two-shell autoloader. Find safe reload cover before assessing the possible burst. |
Compare net earnings over several sessions: credited income minus ammunition, repairs and consumables. Account conditions and reserves should be comparable. Do not assume that the Progetto 46 is guaranteed to earn the most, that the Bourrasque is inexpensive by definition or that the EBR 75 is profitable simply because battles end quickly.
For crews, check compatibility rather than the country's name alone. Nation, vehicle type and combined duties matter more than a best-trainer label. Verify availability and bundle contents before buying; an old promotion is not a current price.
Equipment, crew and testing the choice
Choose equipment around the actual reason for poor results. For a heavy this might mean losing health while tracked or arriving late; for a scout, vision and concealment; for support, shot quality. Check compatibility first: a Gun Rammer, Vertical Stabilizer and Improved Ventilation are not available to every vehicle.
Choose crew perks by duties and task. Repairs helps where being stopped under fire decides the engagement; Concealment helps where stealth can be used. Sixth Sense is already the commander's default feature, so do not put it first in an outdated training order.
Select a mode and one task: hold a ridge, support at range, rotate or provide scouting.
Keep two candidates with different ways of performing that task.
Check the installed gun, equipment compatibility and current client parameters.
Across several battles, record causes of health loss, missed firing opportunities and positional usefulness.
Compare repeatability rather than the single best battle. If both tanks produce the same mistake, start by correcting the decision.
Which heavy should you choose first?
For positional play, compare the Super Conqueror with accessible alternatives; for a mobile group, consider the Object 277. The decision depends on using the role and progressing through the branch. A reward vehicle is not a requirement.
Which medium is the most versatile?
The Object 140 is one candidate for a flexible task. Choose the STB-1, Leopard 1 or CS-63 for a specific scenario rather than treating them as interchangeable names on a top row.
Should you research a light tank or TD?
Yes, if you enjoy its task. Scouts demand information management; TDs demand firing lanes and positioning relative to opponents. For a first choice, willingness to study that role matters more than a ranking letter.
How often does the selection change?
It needs review after significant changes to vehicles, modes or equipment. No fixed annual count of balance updates is assumed. Before committing to a long research path, check the latest official changes to that branch.
