How to Play Affliction Warlock in WoW Forever
Affliction Warlock in WoW Forever wins value from effects that keep damaging a living target while you take the next action. Good play means choosing targets that will survive the setup, preserving the later ticks of a damage effect and keeping enough Health and Mana to finish the fight. Applying every available spell to every enemy is not automatically efficient.
This guide was checked on October 19, 2026. It uses the level-30 beta as the practical starting point and distinguishes deeper talents from the current ordinary toolkit. The October 15 notes replace Malediction with Grim Reach and increase Shadow Mastery's Shadow damage bonus to 2/4/6/8/10%. Older talent lists need that correction before you use them.
The priorities below explain decisions rather than establish a final level-60 damage optimum. Target lifetime, gear, talents, demon choice and the encounter can change which filler or extra effect is worthwhile.
Understand Banes, Curses and the current talent plan
Bane of Agony and Bane of Doom are separate from utility Curses. You can have one of your Banes on a target alongside an appropriate Curse. You cannot keep both of your Banes on that same target. Coordinate the Curse with the group instead of replacing a useful assignment simply to follow a personal opener.
Curse of the Elements now applies to all magic damage. Curse of Shadows was removed. The renamed damage effects should not be treated as a reason to drop group utility.
A level-30 Affliction starting point
A focused setup builds around Improved Corruption, Suppression, the restored Grim Reach, Improved Bane of Agony, Improved Life Tap, Nightfall and Pandemic, with Siphon Life as a deeper addition. Check prerequisites and your actual talent budget before choosing ranks. Five ranks of Improved Corruption make Corruption instant, which changes both movement and multi-target play.
Grim Reach increases Affliction spell range rather than periodic damage. Nightfall produces instant Shadow Bolts; Pandemic increases the critical-strike damage bonus of the listed Affliction spells. Pandemic is not the modern refresh mechanic that carries remaining duration into a new application. It is also a passive talent, not a burst button.
Siphon Life is associated with the 21-point milestone, while Wrack is the 31-point milestone. A normal level-30 setup does not automatically have Wrack. Soul Siphon and deeper damage investments also depend on what you actually buy, not on every talent being available simultaneously. Legacy's Talented perk changes early talent access; do not interpret that as permission to add five unrestricted points to any copied build.
There are no modern Hero Talent branches in this plan. A hybrid that buys demon defenses or other tools sacrifices some Affliction investment. Choose that trade for solo safety or a group job, not because a future build image shows all the desired abilities together.
Keep track of Health, Mana and Soul Shards
Life Tap converts Health into Mana and now benefits from Spirit. It is useful when you can safely spend Health; it does not create resources without a cost. Drain Life helps recover Health while dealing damage, but it takes Mana, channel time and a safe position. Repeatedly tapping during heavy incoming damage can turn a manageable pull into an emergency for your healer.
Soul Shards are inventory reagents used by parts of the demon and utility toolkit. They are not a modern five-unit combat bar to spend on Malefic Rapture or Seed of Corruption. Use the actual reagent requirements of your learned summons, stones and utility spells.
Drain Soul now has a progressive chance per damage tick to grant a shard, with the chance increasing after unsuccessful ticks until a grant is guaranteed. This removes the old assumption that you must wait for a killing blow. It does not guarantee a shard from the first tick or make a target that dies immediately a reliable refill source. Carry a working reserve before a dungeon and leave bag space for it.
Resource situation | Practical action | Why |
Mana low, Health safe | Use Life Tap during a suitable gap | Converts an affordable resource into needed Mana |
Health under pressure | Recover or control the threat first | Another tap can make survival worse |
Shards needed | Find a safe Drain Soul opportunity | Generation needs ticks, not an assumed instant payout |
Existing effects will finish the enemy | Stop buying unnecessary applications | Saves resources for the next target |
Use a conditional single-target priority
For a durable enemy, send your demon in when it should establish threat, apply the agreed Curse if useful, then choose damage effects according to the time available. A controlled pre-cast Immolate is an option; it is not permission to pull before the tank. Against a contested tag or an enemy already near death, an instant action may be more useful than that preparation.
1. Handle a lethal mechanic, a required interrupt or urgent survival before a damage refresh.
2. Maintain the useful assigned Curse and appropriate Bane on a target that will live long enough. Apply Bane of Agony early on durable enemies so its later damage has time to occur.
3. Keep Corruption active on worthwhile targets. Add Siphon Life when learned and the enemy's remaining lifetime justifies another application. Consider Immolate where its cast and damage fit the build and encounter.
4. Use a Nightfall Shadow Trance opportunity for an instant Shadow Bolt before the proc expires or is wasted, preferably on a target that matters.
5. Choose the filler that solves the current problem: Drain Life for useful healing, a safe wand to conserve Mana, Drain Soul for shards, or Wrack after you actually unlock it.

Conditional Affliction decisions
This order is a learning framework. It does not mean that a minor refresh always beats a proc about to expire, or that you must finish a long channel while the boss moves out of range. Look at what will be lost by waiting one more action.
A useful opening on a long-lived target
Begin with the demon and group Curse assignment settled. Apply Agony, Corruption and any worthwhile additional effects, then spend a useful Nightfall proc or choose a filler. Track individual durations rather than restarting the whole opening whenever one effect expires.
Siphon Life takes time to return value and Health. It is an option for durable enemies, not a compulsory purchase on a target that will die in a few seconds. Immolate has an initial hit as well as periodic damage, so judge its full cast against the alternatives instead of assuming that every Affliction global must deal Shadow damage.
Refresh effects without discarding their useful damage
Corruption is a straightforward periodic effect. Agony ramps over its duration, with its later ticks doing more damage than the early ones. Refreshing Agony well before it ends can throw away the strongest part and start the ramp again. Reapplying it to an enemy that will die before those ticks is another wasted investment.
The default learning rule is to let the current application complete and reapply promptly when a new application can do useful work. Do not import a universal 30% refresh window from modern WoW. Current Pandemic's name does not establish such a rule.
A short gap can be a reasonable trade when movement, a dangerous cast or a nearly expired proc matters more. Conversely, standing idle for several seconds while all effects are absent is not efficient resource conservation on a durable boss. Keep the timer display close to your cast bar so you can plan the next safe action.
When several effects expire at different times, refresh them individually. Do not overwrite a healthy Agony merely because Corruption needs attention. When the target is nearly dead, ask whether a direct hit, a remaining tick or simply changing to the next important enemy is better than another full-duration effect.
How Wrack changes deeper Affliction play
Wrack is a drain-style channel that deals Shadow damage every second and increases damage taken from your other Shadow periodic effects by 10% for six seconds. Its role is to provide a stronger Affliction-focused filler between effect maintenance and useful instant Shadow Bolts.
That makes setup important: channeling while worthwhile Shadow effects are missing loses part of the interaction. It does not mean you should apply a long effect to a dying enemy just to make the screen look complete. Wrack also does not turn Immolate's Fire damage into Shadow damage.
Soul Siphon increases the relevant drains and Wrack according to your other Affliction effects on that target, up to its rank's cap. At maximum rank, the official description gives up to 12% per effect and 36% total. It is not an unlimited reason to add every possible debuff. Treat the exact build and rank as part of the decision.
Do not automatically switch to Drain Soul at a modern execute-health threshold. The checked Forever material establishes its shard generation and drain interactions, but does not establish a universal execute rule for this guide. A tooltip from Wrath, Cataclysm or retail is not evidence for your current Forever spell.
Choose between spreading effects and area damage
Several enemies create more possible targets than you can profitably maintain. Start with the enemy whose death matters, then spread Corruption and Agony to additional durable targets you are allowed to attack. Moving damage onto a secondary enemy is useful only if it contributes to the pull's success rather than leaving the dangerous enemy alive longer.

Target lifetime changes the approach
Situation | Starting approach | Main check |
One durable priority target | Maintain useful effects and fill safely | Avoid lost uptime and unnecessary overwrites |
Several durable targets | Spread selected effects, then return to priority | Remaining lifetime and breakable control |
Short-lived grouped pack | Consider direct area damage instead of full setup | Position, threat and available channel time |
Rain of Fire provides ranged area damage when enemies stay in its area. Hellfire becomes an option at level 30, but damages the caster as well as nearby enemies. Do not combine low Health from Life Tap, close-range exposure and Hellfire without a survival plan. Let the tank establish control and watch threat.
There is no verified universal target-count breakpoint here. Pack lifetime, spell rank, talents, positioning and gear change the comparison. Wrack remains a focused-target channel; it does not automatically spread your effects through the pack. Modern Seed and shard-spender sequences should not be inserted into this toolkit.
Plan damage windows around uptime
Affliction's listed passive damage talents are not active cooldowns to stack at the pull. The practical damage window begins when useful effects are established and you can spend several safe actions attacking. Recover necessary Mana before that window rather than emptying the bar during setup.
If you have Amplify Curse, use its current description to decide which supported Curse or Bane benefits from it. Do not assume it strengthens every effect or press it as a universal multiplier. Racial abilities and equipped active items may offer additional windows, but their current versions and your actual inventory determine the plan. Older racial numbers should not be copied after the October changes.
Prioritize a phase where the target stays available. Holding every tool for a theoretical perfect window can lose uses, while spending everything just before an immunity wastes the opportunity. No fixed cooldown script, snapshot rule or final damage percentage is assumed for every encounter.
Choose and control the demon
The Voidwalker is a practical solo option when you need another body holding an enemy's attention. A Sayaad can be attractive when damage matters more than that safety. The Felhunter, unlocked through its class progression at level 30, offers caster utility through Spell Lock. These are different jobs, not a universal pet ranking.

Demon roles require different decisions
In a dungeon, control the demon's target and path and disable threat abilities when they interfere with the tank. Keep it from chasing a fleeing enemy into the next group. Pet survival matters: a dead demon removes damage or utility and costs time and resources to replace. Pets scale from the summoner, but that does not make different demons interchangeable.
Stay alive and keep useful damage moving
Instant Corruption, an appropriate Bane and a Nightfall Shadow Bolt can make necessary movement productive. They are not a reason to overwrite healthy effects on every step. Drain channels still require standing still. Updated wand rules also require half a second stationary before firing, so a wand is not continuous damage while running.
Use a Healthstone before a recoverable situation becomes fatal. Drain Life needs enough time and incoming-damage control to help; it is not an invulnerability button. The Voidwalker's Sacrifice trades the demon for protection when available. Shadow Ward answers Shadow damage rather than every school. Later abilities such as Death Coil belong in the plan only once actually learned.
Fear can reduce immediate pressure, but a fleeing enemy may reach another pack. Banish and other control tools need eligible targets. Coordinate crowd control and avoid breaking a teammate's setup with unnecessary periodic damage. Prepare group stones, Soulstone arrangements and summoning reagents before the pull rather than discovering an empty reagent supply during an emergency.
Review what the fight actually rewarded
Relevant damage stats, hit reliability, critical-strike synergies and resource stats need context. Suppression and the target's level affect hit needs; Pandemic affects the value of critical damage. These interactions do not establish one permanent stat weight, a final raid best-in-slot list or a mandatory profession pair for every player.
After a pull, check early Agony overwrites, effects placed on dying targets, unused Nightfall opportunities, unsafe Life Taps, lost channel time and demon downtime. Change one habit at a time. More icons on more enemies are useful only when they produce damage, survival or group value before the fight ends.
