WoW Midnight Cursed Surges Guide: Timer, Bosses and Rewards
Cursed Surges are public events on the Coiled Isle, introduced with Midnight's Curse of Ula'tek update. Players complete a local objective, defeat a rare elite and then gain a temporary opportunity to fish or gather in the affected area. The same activity can support a weekly quest, collection goals and profession materials, but those rewards have different conditions.
The current event interval is 30 minutes. The original 45-minute schedule was shortened in the September 15 hotfix. A second timer matters after the boss dies: the local Cursed Fishing and gathering opportunity lasts up to 30 minutes. These are separate clocks, so using the entire gathering window can make you late for the next event.
For a short visit, take Turn Back the Surge and aim for three credited completions. For collections, track which of the five bosses you still need. For professions, check your fishing unlock and prepare your tools before the fight ends.
Finding the active event
Open the Events tab beside your quest log and inspect the scheduled Surge, its location and start time. Travel to the marked area before it begins. A listed upcoming event does not mean its boss is already present, while an empty location after the scheduled start may simply mean other players have finished it.
Use the current in-game listing rather than an old timetable. The five sites rotate; you cannot start your preferred variant by standing at its inactive location. If you join another group, recheck the event state after arriving instead of assuming its shard has the same progress.
You need access to the Coiled Isle through the campaign. Maximum friendship with Captain Tokka is not required to take part in the combat event. His fishing quests matter for the profession activity that follows, not as a requirement to attack the Surge boss.
Planning around two timers
The next scheduled start follows the 30-minute cadence, not a fresh 30-minute wait beginning when your group finishes. If a boss dies several minutes after its event begins, part of the time before the next start is already gone.
For example, suppose an event starts at 12:00 and the boss dies at 12:07. Its local gathering opportunity can extend to roughly 12:37, but the next event slot is around 12:30. If you want that next fight, leave the gathering area early enough to travel. This is a planning example, not a timetable for a particular realm.
All five locations and bosses
The coordinates below identify the encounter areas on the Coiled Isle map. They are useful navigation points, not proof that an event is active. Check the event marker once you arrive.
Event | Final rare elite | Coordinates |
The Looming Mutagenitor | Looming Mutagenitor | 26.7, 64.8 |
Mlurkkr Massacre | Ss'akrithos | 71.2, 31.3 |
Siege at the Whispering Marsh | Venom Lancer Ori'kassi | 67.6, 77.8 |
The Malformed Leviathan | Malformed Leviathan | 46.9, 62.2 |
The Broodmother's Nest | Vassti, the Exalted Broodmother | 45.2, 28.6 |
The table is a checklist of sites, not a guaranteed order for your next five visits. You can place map pins manually. An addon waypoint command uses the Coiled Isle map ID 2512, but an addon is not necessary to read the game's event listing.
How to complete a Surge
First work on the displayed local objective. Depending on the variant, this can involve destroying eggs, fighting corrupted creatures, rescuing captives or interrupting the work of enemies performing a ritual. Follow the event tracker: killing unrelated creatures nearby is not a reliable substitute for its requested activity.
Once the opening progress is complete, a rare elite appears. Take part in the fight and remain until the event records completion. Check the weekly counter before leaving, then loot the boss and any reward container. A nearby corpse alone does not prove that your character received credit.
The opening work can often be handled alone. The final elite is more comfortable with a few allies; a group of two or three is a useful starting point rather than a mandatory group size or a promise that every character can survive. Bring more help if your damage, defenses or the available players are insufficient.
Avoid standing in damaging effects merely to keep attacking. Use personal defenses before heavy incoming damage and leave room to move around the encounter area. Specific boss casts and class tactics are not interchangeable, so react to the enemies and telegraphs actually present.

Four steps for completing a Cursed Surge
The weekly quest and daily boss rewards
Turn Back the Surge
Turn Back the Surge asks for three Cursed Surge completions. Accept it before your first planned run and watch the objective counter after each boss. It does not use the same checklist as the achievement requiring all five different bosses.
The weekly reward package includes a Venom-Covered Chest, 1,000 reputation with Zul'jarra's Forces and one Spark of Tides. That reputation belongs to the island's main Renown faction, not Captain Tokka's friendship. Completing more events does not turn the same weekly quest into an unlimited source of Sparks.
If you attend three consecutive 30-minute slots, the first and third starts are an hour apart. Travel, the final fight and any missed event add time, so this is not a guarantee of finishing the quest in exactly one hour.
Personal loot and Renown unlocks
Surge rewards include Venom-Soaked Satchels, currencies and possible equipment. Personal rare-elite loot has daily eligibility; do not assume another completion refreshes every item you have already received. Further participation can still be useful for a different boss, achievements or the local gathering window.
Zul'jarra's Forces Renown changes some reward opportunities:
Unlock | What it adds | Important limit |
Renown 4 | A chance at a Corrosive Soul from your first Surge boss of the day | A daily chance, not a guaranteed Soul per kill |
Renown 8 | Surge bosses can drop Warbound Veteran equipment | A daily chance, not guaranteed equipment every event |
Do not confuse this with buying a reputation-vendor item. A chance to loot equipment is not an automatic grant for reaching the rank, and an additional event does not necessarily offer the same personal rewards as the first eligible kill.

Three reasons to take part in Cursed Surges
Mounts, the mask and achievements
Ruby Writhe and Topaz Skyfang
Ruby Writhe and Topaz Skyfang are random mount drops associated with Coiled Isle rare creatures, including Surge rares. They are not guaranteed weekly rewards, and the event bosses are not the only rare creatures listed as sources.
Choose eligible bosses you still need and combine attempts with the weekly quest. A quoted number of kills from another player's session is not a drop guarantee. This guide does not assign a fixed drop rate or a certain number of runs to either mount.
Ancient Amani Mask
The Ancient Amani Mask toy comes from the Sunken Diver's Chest in the far north, around 65.4, 5.6. Opening it requires a Diver's Key made by combining three Diver's Key Fragments.
Older event descriptions point to Ss'akrithos as a fragment source. You do not need to treat that boss as the exclusive route: the nearby Glittering Grouper Brintail fish also provide fragments. If the mask is your immediate goal, check those enemies around the chest rather than waiting through several event slots solely for the key.
Keep the stages separate: collect the fragments, combine the key and open the underwater chest. Defeating a Surge boss does not directly award the mask to every participant.
Two different achievement goals
Turn the Surge requires each of the five named bosses. Track the individual criteria so you can distinguish a missing variant from a repeat kill. Three completions for the weekly quest do not necessarily finish this achievement.
Cursebreaker is the longer goal: 300 completed Surges for the corresponding title. Check the achievement counter after a session instead of counting every nearby elite as an event completion. This total does not mean you must receive fresh daily equipment on all 300 runs.
Cursed Fishing and gathering after the fight
The defeated boss activates Cursed Land and Waters locally for up to 30 minutes. The effect opens a profession opportunity in that area; it does not make every waterway or resource node on the island permanently cursed.
For Cursed Fishing, complete Venom Fishing: Shell of Yourself in Captain Tokka's side story. You need both the learned method and an active post-Surge area. Neither condition replaces the other. You do not need The Coiled Huntress, the final-rank fishing rod, merely to unlock this method.
Temporary fishing and gathering can supply materials such as Cursebound Globe and Neutralized Venom Clot. Use the relevant profession and prepared tools, then confirm that you are inside the affected area. The existence of an event marker elsewhere on the island does not mean every node around you has changed.

Three checks before using the post-event profession window
If resources are your main goal, prepare free bag space and profession equipment before the boss dies. If your goal is the next scheduled fight, watch its timer and budget the return journey. You can choose between a longer gathering session and another completion; trying to consume both full windows may not fit.
Captain Tokka's friendship, Coiled Filament and the event's weekly Renown reward are different systems. Fish caught during an event window can support fishing objectives, but a Surge victory is not the same as turning stored Venom into Filament or completing a Tokka daily quest.
A route that matches your goal
For weekly progress, take the quest, arrive before a start and confirm credit after each of three completions. Collect the reward when the objective is complete. You do not have to stay for a long profession session if that is not part of your plan.
For collections, track missing Turn the Surge bosses and eligible mount attempts. Make the underwater chest a separate stop if you need the mask. For materials, unlock Cursed Fishing first and favor a useful local gathering session over an unnecessary dash to every new event.
The event is listed but nothing is happening
Check whether the listing shows a future start. If the time has passed, confirm the correct location and event phase; a busy group may already have killed the boss. Recheck after changing groups or shards.
I won the fight but cannot use Cursed Fishing
Check Shell of Yourself, the local Cursed Land and Waters effect and its remaining duration. Standing outside the affected area or arriving after it expires will not provide the same fishing access.
