WoW Midnight Gear Upgrades: Crests, Tracks and Discounts

Upgrading gear in Midnight starts with three questions: which track the item belongs to, how many ranks remain, and which currency the next step requires. A high item level does not imply unlimited progression. A useful purchase improves your next realistic activity while accounting for how soon the piece might be replaced.

This guide was checked on October 15, 2026 for Midnight Season 2 and patch 12.1.5. Ordinary upgrades use gold and Mistcrests. Profession crafting, class-set conversion and the later Ascendant Venomstone system follow separate rules. Keeping those systems distinct prevents one price or restriction from being applied to the wrong item.

Before visiting the vendor, inspect your weapon, set bonus and trinkets. Identify a specific problem: damage against an important target, survival, or a badly outdated slot. Raising the average number on your character panel does not necessarily solve that problem better than a few targeted improvements.

Find the upgrade and exchange vendors

Cuzolth upgrades equipment, while Vaskarn exchanges crests. Find them in Silvermoon near 48.6, 61.7. These are separate services: access to a currency exchange does not prove that a chosen item can reach the level you want.

Open Cuzolth's interface and choose an item from your bags or through the add-item control. Inspect the current rank, available destination, required crest type and total gold cost. Select the number of steps you want, then review the result before confirming the transaction.

You do not have to purchase the entire remaining track at once. If the immediate goal only needs a small improvement, buying one or two ranks can preserve resources for another slot. Comparing the price after a weekly reward or discount unlock can also change the best purchase.

WoW Midnight Gear Upgrades: Crests, Tracks and Discounts

If an item is missing from the selection, check its season and origin first. Gear without an ordinary track, old seasonal loot and profession-crafted equipment do not have to behave like a current dungeon drop. Reopening the window cannot remove those restrictions.

The track defines the ordinary ceiling

There are five main upgrade tracks, each with six ranks. A 3/6 label means rank three inside the current track. It does not describe all your future replacements, and it does not promise that the piece can move into the next category.

279

295

308

Hero

305

321

Myth

318

334

A Champion 6/6 item remains Champion. Entering Hero requires another base item, just as entering Myth requires a replacement for Hero gear. The ranges overlap, however: Champion 6/6 and Hero 2/6 are both item level 308. The higher track offers a stronger eventual ceiling without making every fresh drop an immediate improvement.

For example, Hero 4/6 is 315, Hero 5/6 is 318 and Hero 6/6 is 321. Myth starts at 318, then reaches 321 at rank two. That overlap helps explain the value of a slot level already earned, while leaving the track identities intact.

Special raid loot has exceptions. Very Rare items and loot from the penultimate and final bosses of The Venomous Abyss on Mythic can reach 344. This is not the normal continuation of every Myth item beyond 6/6. The standard ceiling is also separate from later Venomstone enhancement of eligible equipment.

Calculate the crest bill correctly

A standard upgrade costs 20 matching crests per step. The price does not increase as the rank rises. Moving from 1/6 to 6/6 takes five steps, so the base bill is 100 crests before discounts, plus gold.

4/6

5/6

An item that drops at 3/6 needs only three more steps to reach 6/6, costing 60 crests before discounts. Do not add the cost of ranks the item already has. Likewise, buying two steps from 4/6 costs 40 rather than the full beginning-to-end budget.

The planning formula is simple: multiply the remaining paid steps by the price that actually applies. The vendor's final quote takes precedence over a rough calculation because discounts can lower the amount. Inspect gold separately; removing the crest charge does not make the whole transaction free.

Farm the currency the item needs

Season 2 uses Mistcrests rather than the Dawncrests from Season 1. Each track has its own matching type. A large stock of Champion crests cannot directly pay for a Hero upgrade simply because the currencies are related.

Veteran Mistcrest

Champion Mistcrest

Hero Mistcrest

Myth Mistcrest

Myth

Mythic raids and +9 or higher keys

These are examples rather than a catalogue of every extra chest. Delves, Prey and Journey unlocks can provide separate rewards with their own conditions. Choose an activity for the crest type you need rather than judging it solely by the equipment that drops there.

Mythic+ illustrates the distinction. Myth crests begin at +9, while a standard Myth Great Vault option begins at +10. The ordinary end chest of a +10 still awards Hero 3/6, item level 311. Currency type, immediate loot and next week's reward answer different planning questions.

Separate the earning cap from your balance

The base seasonal cap grows by 100 crests of each type per week. As the ceiling increases through the season, a returning character can catch up on missed progress. The available earning limit is different from the amount currently held in the currency tab.

Spending crests should not be treated as a way to reset the earning counter. Before repeating an activity for one currency, inspect its tooltip and the remaining allowance. Reaching the relevant cap can cause rewards to shift to a lower crest type, changing the usefulness of further runs for your current goal.

The cap is still relevant on this guide's check date. Blizzard schedules its removal for the week of October 20 alongside the next mid-season power unlock. That is a future change relative to October 15, rather than a rule already active throughout patch 12.1.5.

Understand the two different discounts

Replacing gear in a slot already progressed

Once a character has earned a particular item level in a slot, another eligible piece for that slot can catch up without paying crests again. A replacement cloak with better secondary stats is a straightforward example. Inspect the selected ranks: moving beyond the level already earned brings back the appropriate charge.

This discount belongs to the individual character. A strong weapon on another Warband member does not make every item on your current character free to upgrade to that level. For paired slots and weapons, use the interface's actual calculation rather than extrapolating from one displayed item.

Seasonal Warband achievements

A separate system cuts the matching crest upgrade cost for alts by 50%. When this discount applies, a normal 20-crest step costs 10. It comes from seasonal achievements and applies independently to the relevant track.

20

10

Selected step remains within the eligible boundary

For example, Champion of the Mist concerns a high watermark of 308 in every slot, while Hero of the Mist uses 321. The average number on your character panel does not replace the achievement criteria. When one item is far behind, check whether that slot is preventing the unlock.

WoW Midnight Gear Upgrades: Crests, Tracks and Discounts

Do not combine the discounts as two independent percentages or subtract them from a profession order. The ordinary upgrade interface shows the applicable result. A useful budget records the actual cost of the ranks you need instead of assuming that every purchase has the same price.

Exchange crests with Vaskarn deliberately

Vaskarn offers exchanges after the relevant services are unlocked. If they are unavailable, check the introductory gear and upgrade quests. Achievements marking that a character has outgrown a track also unlock exchanges from lower crests into higher ones.

The directions have different economics. Downgrading to an adjacent crest type is offered in bundles of 10 for 10, while eligible upward exchanges require 30 lower crests for 10 higher ones. This is not a lossless conversion back and forth. Read the bundle and applicable earning restrictions before purchasing.

Exchange a surplus for a known purpose. If a Hero upgrade is nearly affordable, converting the whole Hero reserve into Champion crests can make that goal harder. Conversely, lower currency that has no immediate use can become helpful after upward trading is unlocked. Available services matter as much as the headline balance.

Crafted gear follows another upgrade route

A profession item does not climb Cuzolth's ordinary six-rank ladder. Crafting and recrafting account for the recipe, quality, seasonal sparks and optional reagents. Agree on the finished level and desired secondary stats before ordering; one crest total cannot describe the whole result.

Season 2 epic craft

Crests used to raise the craft

No additional crest type

305

None

With Hero Mistcrests

318

80 matching crests

With Myth Mistcrests

331

80 matching crests

Spark of Tides supplies the seasonal epic base. Most pieces need two sparks, while a two-handed weapon needs four. Rare crafted items have another route and can be made without sparks. A blanket claim that every crafted item always costs 80 crests is therefore misleading.

Compare the order with the loot you already own. If a good Hero piece covers the slot, commissioning a temporary replacement there may help less than improving a weapon or fixing a badly outdated item elsewhere. Account for embellishments, possible recrafting, material costs and the likely replacement window.

Decide which item deserves the next ranks

Start with equipment that will remain in your working set. Weapons often deserve attention, while a trinket depends on its effect and a set piece depends on preserving a useful bonus. No single purchase order fits every specialization and role.

Champion gear should not be forbidden automatically. Improving it can make current activities reliable and help approach a seasonal discount. It spends its own crest type rather than directly consuming a Myth reserve. Overinvesting in an item likely to be replaced soon can still be inefficient, so evaluate the actual goal.

Likewise, do not finish every Myth item solely because of its label. A weak trinket effect or the loss of an important set bonus may change the decision. Compare the full loadout; damage specializations can simulate alternatives, while tanks and healers must also consider survival and practical encounter use.

WoW Midnight Gear Upgrades: Crests, Tracks and Discounts

Before paying, ask what problem the item solves, when it may be replaced, which discount applies and what remains afterward. If a weekly reward is still pending, inspect it first. Waiting for perfect loot should not indefinitely prevent useful progress through content you can already play.

Ascendant Venomstones beyond ordinary upgrades

This is a separate Season 2 enhancement stage. During the week of October 13, Orin Straylight offers Ancient Depths, Ancient Venom. Research completes during the week of October 20 and leads to Ascending with Venomstones. On this guide's check date, the new ability is still ahead.

After the required quest, sources include Heroic and Mythic raid bosses, +10 or higher keys, Tier 11 Bountiful Delves and Nightmare Prey Champion gear chests. Ten stones enhance an eligible fully upgraded Season 2 weapon, trinket or necklace. A crafted base must meet the maximum-quality and corresponding seasonal requirements.

Do not apply this rule to every armor slot or treat the stones as a substitute for the crests needed to reach 6/6. The item must qualify first. Inspect the specific piece near the Catalyst in Silvermoon before spending.

Frequently asked questions

Can ordinary upgrades turn Hero into Myth

No. Ranks increase item level inside the track. Myth requires another base item, while later enhancement of eligible gear is a separate system.

Why does a step cost fewer than twenty crests

A Warband discount or the removal of repeated crest charges up to an earned slot level may apply. Inspect the final quote, including gold.

Should I wait until every item is ideal

No. Plan around a realistic next goal. A useful intermediate item can help you earn the next replacement even if it will eventually leave your set.
