How to Gear Up in WoW Midnight: Loot, Crafting and Upgrades

Last Updated:15 Oct 2026

Efficient gearing in Midnight combines three different jobs: replace weak items today, earn useful weekly reward choices, and preserve resources for equipment worth keeping. Dungeons, raids, Delves and crafting contribute in different ways. Completing every available activity is rarely the best answer if none of its rewards addresses your character's next problem.

This guide was checked on October 15, 2026 for Midnight Season 2 and patch 12.1.5. It separates direct loot, Great Vault rewards and upgrades to items you already own. Numbers describe standard seasonal rewards unless an exception is identified. Mid-season systems are distinguished from the ordinary upgrade ladder.

Inspect your character first. Identify two or three weak slots, check your set bonus, and choose an immediate goal: consistent solo clears, joining a raid, or moving into harder dungeons. Average item level is useful information, but it cannot tell you whether your weapon, trinkets and specialization interactions are working together.

Preferred activity

Main route

Useful supplement

Mostly solo

Manageable Delves and Prey hunts

Weekly quests and a targeted craft

Small-group play

Seasonal dungeons and gradual Keystone progression

Great Vault choices and crafted gap fillers

Scheduled raiding

Suitable bosses and class-set progress

Dungeons for missing items and crests

Treat these as starting plans. A raider can still benefit from a Delve that fills an actual gap. A solo player does not need to begin a raid schedule solely to illuminate every Vault pane. The right combination depends on the rewards still useful to you.

Understand the upgrade track

An item's level and its upgrade track answer different questions. A rank such as 1/6 shows progress inside the current track. It does not mean that the piece can climb through all the tracks above it. A Champion piece remains Champion after its final ordinary upgrade; reaching Hero requires another item.

Upgrade track

Item levels from 1/6 to 6/6

Planning implication

Adventurer

266-282

Starter seasonal equipment

Veteran

279-295

Early replacements and eligible Catalyst bases

Champion

292-308

A foundation for further progression

Hero

305-321

A higher standard upgrade ceiling

Myth

318-334

The highest ordinary seasonal track

The ranges overlap. A fully upgraded item from one track can temporarily exceed a fresh item from the next. Consider both immediate performance and the replacement's future ceiling. Discarding useful gear purely because of its track label can make your current set worse.

Myth has specific exceptions. Very Rare items and loot from the penultimate and final bosses of The Venomous Abyss on Mythic can reach item level 344, equivalent to Myth 9. This is special loot, not three additional ordinary upgrade steps available to every Myth piece.

Get the first replacements at maximum level

Start with accessible outdoor activities, Heroic dungeons and manageable Delves. Read the actual quest reward before leaving town. An activity whose equipment is already weaker than yours may remain useful for another resource, but it does not need a permanent place on your gearing schedule.

Weekly quests and events can provide early replacements. They do not all award Hero gear. Check the cache, season and restrictions rather than treating every weekly box as the same reward. A quest cache and a Great Vault option are separate systems despite sharing a weekly rhythm.

For an alt, inspect available Warband items and seasonal caches. Be careful with older reward lists: official Season 2 changes leave some older world-boss drops as Season 1 items without further upgrades. Receiving a new currency from an event does not prove that every piece of its equipment is a current-season upgrade.

Renown vendors can also cover individual gaps. Look at the specific stock and purchase requirement. A blanket instruction to reach Revered or Exalted is not a substitute for checking how a particular faction's rewards work. Choose the activity for the item you can actually obtain.

The Great Vault gives choices, not a pile of items

The Great Vault is inside Silvermoon's bank. After the weekly reset, choose one reward from the options unlocked through the previous week's activities. Opening nine panes does not award nine pieces, and a full Vault can still lack the slot you hoped to replace.

Raid choices unlock at 2, 4 and 6 bosses. Dungeon choices unlock at 1, 4 and 8 completions. World choices unlock at 2, 4 and 8 qualifying activities, including Delves, Prey and other eligible events. Rated PvP does not form another row of this PvE Vault.

In Mythic+, your best run does not set all three choices. The relevant completions are your highest, fourth-highest and eighth-highest. For example, one +10 followed by three +2 runs earns a first choice at the +10 level and a second at the +2 level. Completing extra lower keys does not reduce options already earned.

Before the week ends, inspect the panes in the interface. They show what has counted and what would improve the next choice. This is more useful than completing eight runs without knowing which reward levels the activity has secured.

When claiming a reward, compare every option with your set bonus and planned crafts first. If none is useful, examine the alternatives. A Nebulous Voidcore can be selected instead of gear after unlocking at least three panes. It is not an extra item automatically awarded alongside your usual selection.

Dungeons have two different reward levels

Seasonal dungeons provide repeatable attempts at a useful weapon or trinket. The end chest does not promise a personal item to every party member. Choose a difficulty the group can complete consistently; repeated abandoned high keys do not replace successful clears with useful rewards.

311, Hero 3/6

318, Myth 1/6

A +10 does not award ordinary Myth-track loot from its end chest. Its access to that track comes through the Vault and eligible bonus loot. Crest thresholds are another separate check: Myth Mistcrests begin at +9, while the standard Myth Vault option begins at +10.

For a specific target, inspect the Adventure Guide and confirm your loot specialization. Repeating the relevant dungeon gives more attempts without guaranteeing a delivery date. Avoid an expensive temporary purchase made solely to enter a key the group cannot realistically finish.

Raids and class-set decisions

Compare direct raid loot with the weekly reward separately. Season 2 improves the raid row, so Normal and Heroic clears can unlock a higher track in the Vault than their ordinary direct drops.

These are baseline rules, not a promise that every boss item has an identical level. Special rewards have exceptions. Inspect the boss and difficulty for your target trinket; do not copy the Vault's item level onto a direct drop.

Evaluate your specialization's two-piece and four-piece bonuses. A higher-level non-set item may not compensate for losing an important bonus. Compare the whole equipment change before removing a set piece.

The Catalyst converts eligible seasonal armor into class-set pieces. PvE gear must be Veteran-track or higher, and profession-crafted armor is ineligible. Head, shoulders, chest, hands and legs provide the set bonus. Other eligible armor slots can change appearance without becoming additional bonus-bearing pieces.

In Season 2, converted items retain their original secondary and tertiary stats and the special effects covered by the conversion rules. Inspect the preview before confirming. A Catalyst charge does not raise the upgrade track or turn a weak base into the season's maximum-level equipment.

Catalyst charges follow the seasonal schedule, with another charge every two weeks after the initial one. Earning your four-piece bonus opens additional charge sources for that character. Inspect the available supply before converting: access to the system does not make every slot an equally valuable use.

Delves and Prey for independent progression

Delves let you work at a manageable difficulty while preparing for harder challenges. Bountiful loot needs the appropriate Delve and a Restored Coffer Key. The ordinary chest, keyed coffer and map treasure should not be counted as one interchangeable reward.

Activity

Tier 8+ Bountiful Delve

Hard Prey

279, Veteran 1/6

292, Champion 1/6

Nightmare Prey

292, Champion 1/6

305, Hero 1/6

The Delve completion column describes the keyed coffer. A Delver's Bounty map at Tier 8+ provides a separate Hero 1/6 opportunity. Higher tiers do not raise the baseline item indefinitely; Tiers 9-11 also serve resource and challenge goals. Journey unlocks can add separate rewards, so distinguish them from the normal coffer rule.

Prey's main completion gear is limited to the first two hunts each week at each difficulty. Qualifying Vault progress remains a separate benefit. Do not repeat a difficulty expecting the same main equipment reward after that allowance is exhausted.

If you want a comfortable solo routine, establish reliable clears first. Raise the difficulty when you understand dangerous abilities and can survive them. Solo access does not imply that every tier is easy in any gear.

Craft gaps and spend crests deliberately

Crafting is useful when random drops leave one slot far behind. Crafting Orders let another specialist make the item; you do not need to learn that profession yourself. Agree on quality, materials, secondary stats and embellishments before placing the order.

Spark of Tides is the reagent for Season 2 epic gear. Most pieces need two sparks, while a two-handed weapon needs four. At maximum quality, a standard spark craft reaches 305. Adding 80 Hero Mistcrests supports 318, or 80 Myth Mistcrests supports 331. Those are maximum-quality ceilings, not a guaranteed outcome from any order.

Ordinary loot upgrades work differently. They use gold and the crest type matching the item's track. The base cost is 20 crests per step, so moving from 1/6 to 6/6 means five paid upgrades and 100 crests before discounts. Do not confuse that cost with crafting reagents or an early test-realm calculation.

Cuzolth in Silvermoon shows the final price before confirmation. Check the slot level already earned and available Warband discounts. Before exchanging higher crests for lower ones, establish whether the higher currency is needed for your next meaningful upgrade. Reversing the decision should not be assumed to be free.

How to Gear Up in WoW Midnight: Loot, Crafting and Upgrades

A useful order is to inspect the weekly reward, secure the important set bonus, and then craft or upgrade toward a specific goal. Weapons and strong trinkets deserve their own comparison. Damage specializations can simulate alternatives; tanks and healers also need to consider survival, practical use and encounter demands.

Bonus loot and the mid-season refresh

A Nebulous Voidcore provides a separate loot attempt from eligible activities. Season 2 raid rolls cost one core, and the gear quality matches that activity's Vault reward. Check your loot specialization and the displayed pool before spending. An item earned through the roll is removed from the corresponding pool for future rolls at that difficulty.

Returning players should follow the current Voidforge introduction through In the Catalyst's Shadow rather than repeat the Season 1 construction instructions. Research with Orin Straylight unlocks an additional weekly core purchase. Catch-up for missed purchases does not remove every prerequisite from the system.

Patch 12.1.5 adds The Unbinding of Kith'ix and the Labyrinth of Kindo'jan. These broaden your available goals without replacing every established route. The Labyrinth has its own progression and reward conditions. Access to Myth gear does not mean a new character receives a Myth item from every chamber.

On the check date, Ascendant Venomstones are still ahead: research completes during the week of October 20. The crest cap is also scheduled to be removed that week. After the relevant quest, ten stones can strengthen an eligible fully upgraded Season 2 weapon, trinket or necklace. Treat this as the next progression stage rather than a resource required to assemble today's starter set.

PvP and a manageable weekly routine

If your main goal is Arena or Battlegrounds, build around Honor and Conquest equipment and its PvP item level. Comparing only the ordinary number in your bags with a raid table misses the combat scaling that changes the choice. PvE Vault rewards and PvP vendor purchases remain separate gearing routes.

For a regular week, begin by evaluating the previous reward. Then complete activities that earn the next useful option. Add targeted attempts at an important item and one planned resource purchase. Before reset, check your panes and remaining quests instead of beginning another unrelated checklist.

Revise the plan when a goal is met. Once Delves no longer provide missing items, they may still supply resources, but they do not need to consume most of the week. Progress is easier to evaluate when every activity solves a known equipment problem.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need all nine Vault panes

No. They broaden the choice of a single reward. Earn a useful quality level in an accessible mode first, then add choices when time and interest allow.

Can I get a class set without raiding

Yes, through eligible armor and the Catalyst. Check the item's eligibility, slot, available charge and conversion preview first.

Why is a newer item sometimes weaker

Item level does not capture the whole set bonus, trinket effect or stat distribution. Compare the complete equipment change rather than one number.
