WoW Midnight Omnium Folio: Unlock, Runes and Progression
The Omnium Folio is Midnight's separate rune progression system, introduced in patch 12.0.7. It adds passive combat effects without occupying an equipment slot. You keep your weapon, armor and trinkets while configuring the Folio through its own interface.
This guide was checked on October 17, 2026. It covers the introduction, the five progression stages, rune functions and practical checks for returning players or alternate characters. The system has already been released; early assumptions about account access and quest-item sources should be checked against later fixes.
Feature | Practical meaning |
No equipment slot | Unlocking the system does not require replacing an equipped item |
Five rune rows | Progression adds layers to the initial Core Rune |
One active option per row | Unlocking a choice does not activate every alternative together |
Changes outside combat | You can revise available choices before an activity |
Expansion-long powers | Blizzard described the powers as lasting through the rest of Midnight |
The Folio is not a new resource bar to spend during every rotation. Most of its value comes from completing the progression and choosing effects suited to the character and activity.
How to unlock the Omnium Folio
Begin with The Magisters' Call
Start at the floating Magister's Missive near the Ritual Site vendors in Silvermoon City. It offers The Magisters' Call and sends you toward the Sunstrider Omnium storyline involving Magister Umbric and Grand Magister Rommath.
Follow the introduction through the restoration of the ancient device. The final unlock is associated with The Omnium Reawakens. After access is established, the Folio can be opened through its icon near the minimap; the progression quests are a further step, not a reason to search for a wearable book.
Where the quests take place
The Omnium is inside the Magisters' Terrace area on the Isle of Quel'Danas, not the dungeon instance. A portal beside the original Missive was added in a later hotfix to make returning for weekly quests easier. The area guide also documents a portal at the Thalassian University.
Navigation point | Coordinates |
Starting Missive / nearby return portal in Silvermoon | 47.9, 51.6 |
Thalassian University portal in Silvermoon | 38.9, 48.9 |
Sunstrider Omnium on Quel'Danas | 63.7, 18.6 |
Coordinates help locate the correct area, but they do not complete the introduction. If a return portal is unavailable, check your character's quest progress before entering the dungeon or travelling repeatedly between the same NPCs.

Unlock the system before choosing its upgrades
Five progression stages
Seeking Knowledge quests award Motes of Omnial Inquiry, used to unlock the next rune row. The original release advanced through five weekly stages. The labels below describe that progression order; they should not be treated as a fresh five-week countdown for every alternate character regardless of account progress.
Stage | Quest theme and objective | Rune layer |
1 | Retrieve the Folio and complete its introductory tutorial | Core Rune |
2 | Collect eight Ritualized Arcana in Ritual Sites and finish a run | Defense or movement |
3 | Gather five Dark-Ley Coalescence through Void Assault activities | Lingering effect |
4 | Obtain the required magical essence from eligible content | Secondary-stat effect |
5 | Obtain the off-world fragment and complete three world quests in Val or Naigtal | Final enhancement |
Read the active quest rather than matching only its week number. Localized titles and older guide tables can disagree about numbering; the objective and quest theme are more useful navigation aids.
Getting the quest items
For Ritualized Arcana, loot the eligible enemies inside a Ritual Site and finish the required activity. For the assault stage, focus on the event completions specified by the quest rather than assuming every nearby enemy supplies its item.
The magical-essence stage has documented sources including Delve bosses and final dungeon bosses. Choose a suitable activity you can complete and remember to loot the eligible boss. A successful run and collecting the requested item are separate steps.
The off-world stage originally directed players toward Showdown world bosses. Later official fixes expanded the fragment's sources to Elite Rares, Overseers and Rivals in Val and Naigtal. Complete the three world quests as well: finding the fragment alone does not finish the entire objective.
Account progress and alternate characters
A June hotfix made Seeking Knowledge weekly prerequisites account-wide starting with Week 2. It explicitly retained the Sunstrider Omnium unlock questline for alternate characters. Do not translate “account-wide” into “every character automatically has the introduction completed.”
On an alternate character, first finish the missing access quests, then inspect what Umbric offers and which rows are available. If your account already has progress, do not assume that an old launch calendar is the only possible schedule for that character. Conversely, do not expect a missing prerequisite to disappear merely because you have reached maximum level.
The reliable check is the character's actual quest list and Folio interface. Record the stage you are working on before leaving the hub; this prevents completing the wrong activity for a similarly named quest.
The two Core Runes
The first row establishes the initial damage or healing effect. Both options are passive systems that respond to your actions, rather than extra buttons that replace normal class abilities.

The two Core Rune options
Rune of Void-Touched Orbs
This rune collects orbs over time and releases them through damaging or healing actions. It provides a different delivery pattern from the fire option. Do not interpret stored orbs as a substitute for using your class's important abilities or completing mechanics.
Rune of Unleashed Fire
This option triggers fire-based damage or healing from your spells and abilities. A simple-looking effect is not evidence that it is only for casual content, nor does the other rune's versatility make it automatically stronger for every specialization.
Choose with a current class recommendation and the intended activity in mind. If you compare the two yourself, keep the loadout and test conditions consistent; a single short combat result is not a reliable ranking.
Defense and movement in the second row
Rune | Function | Question to ask |
Rune of Self-Mending | Core Rune activity also heals you below its health threshold | Do repeated health dips make additional recovery useful? |
Rune of Void-Tainted Shell | A sufficiently large hit triggers a shield with a damage-over-time tradeoff | Does this help with the damage pattern you must survive? |
Rune of Lynxlike Reflexes | Taking damage grants a temporary Speed effect | Is movement the practical problem in this encounter? |
Self-Mending is not an always-active replacement for defensive abilities. The Shell is not free immunity: its protective effect has conditions and a delayed damage component. The movement choice reacts to taking damage, so it should not be treated as an on-demand movement skill.
Choose the problem you need to solve before choosing the rune. A tank, healer and damage dealer can face different risks in the same encounter. Recheck the live tooltip for exact thresholds and amounts rather than copying rating values from an older build.
Lingering and secondary-stat effects
The third row contains Rune of Lingering. It adds a periodic effect to the Core Rune's output and favors targets not already affected by that periodic component. Its role is to extend the system's effect, not introduce a competing second Core Rune choice.
The fourth row offers four stat directions.
Rune | Secondary stat |
Rune of Critical Power | Critical Strike |
Rune of Burning Haste | Haste |
Rune of Masterful Cunning | Mastery |
Rune of Versatile Warrior | Versatility |
These are temporary effects connected with rune activation. Choose according to the current specialization, equipment and activity. A general stat list is a starting point; it does not guarantee that one stat rune is best for every character or after every gear change.
The final enhancement row
The last row changes which part of the Folio's output is emphasized. The alternatives are mutually exclusive choices, not three bonuses to collect and activate at once.

Three approaches to the final enhancement
Rune of Overload strengthens the Core Rune's damage and healing. Rune of Residual Energy strengthens Rune of Lingering. Rune of Echoes repeats a portion of the Core and Lingering output after a delay. An increase to one component must not be described as the same percentage increase to all of your character's damage.
Consider whether the target remains available and whether delayed healing or damage can accomplish useful work. A longer fight alone does not prove that one final rune wins; the chosen Core Rune and specialization interactions also matter.
Choosing a setup without a universal ranking
Activity | Main comparison |
Raid | Useful damage or healing, predictable survival requirements and encounter timing |
Mythic+ | Target lifetime, pull pattern, movement and survival |
Solo play | Recovery, reliable output and manageable risk |
PvP | Current PvP behavior, survival needs and the specialization's recommendation |
Start with a current guide for the specific specialization, then inspect how its recommended runes fit your situation. For damage dealers, a suitable character simulation can help compare candidates when the system is supported. For tanks and healers, useful survival and effective healing require more context than a damage total.
Change available runes outside combat before entering an activity. After changing role or specialization, reopen the interface and verify the active choices instead of assuming every previous selection matches the new task.
Rewards and a short completion check
Completing the five Seeking Knowledge quests leads to Omnium Folio Studies and the Sunstrider Omnium Simulacrum housing decor reward. This is a collection reward alongside the combat progression, not an extra gear slot or a replacement for ordinary equipment upgrades.
Before calling the setup complete, check the unlocked rows, active options and quest completion. If an item did not drop, confirm the exact objective, eligible source and whether you looted it. If the minimap icon is missing, inspect the interface configuration and character access before repeating unrelated content.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change runes in combat?
The documented rule allows changes outside combat. Prepare the setup before the fight.
Does another character need the introduction?
Yes. Account-wide weekly prerequisites from Week 2 do not remove the individual unlock questline.
Is the fire rune only a beginner option?
No universal role restriction follows from its description. Use current specialization guidance rather than the visual theme or a generic ranking.
Must the off-world fragment come from a world boss?
Later official fixes added Elite Rares, Overseers and Rivals in Val and Naigtal as sources. Check the active quest and complete its other objectives too.
