WoW Midnight Venomous Abyss Guide: Bosses, Route and Rewards

ByTardius

Last Updated:17 Oct 2026

The Venomous Abyss is Midnight's eight-encounter raid beneath the Coiled Isle. Its central challenge is coordination: separated targets, assigned damage-sharing groups, venom effects with different responses and a final fight that turns egg handling into a raid responsibility. A group that treats every circle as something to dodge will make avoidable mistakes.

This guide covers access, the route, practical Normal and Heroic priorities, equipment and collection goals. It is an overview for preparation, not a complete Mythic strategy. Check the current Adventure Journal before a first pull, especially when moving up a difficulty.

Access and opening schedule

For an organized group, travel to the Coiled Isle, enter the Vaults of Atal'Utek and follow the northern part of the underground complex to the raid portal. Set the intended difficulty before entering. Raid Finder is accessed through the group-finding interface; its item-level requirement is a queue threshold, not a guarantee that a character is ready for an organized Heroic group.

The release dates below refer to the week of each region's maintenance reset. They describe the original rollout, rather than a future waiting period: all listed wings have opened as of October 17, 2026.

Wing 4: The Coiled Altar and Ula'tek

Story Mode serves the narrative visit. Do not use it as a substitute for a reward run: it does not contribute raid boss completions to the Great Vault. Raid Finder's wing selection also does not describe the walking order inside a full organized instance.

Route through the vaults

Nek'zali guards the opening. Beyond her, the raid branches: Entombed Sentinels lead toward Vashnik, while The Lost Explorers lead toward Sszorak. Clear both branches before continuing into the deeper sequence of The Twin Fangs, The Coiled Altar and Ula'tek.

The two branches let the raid leader decide which encounters to tackle first. They do not turn the later bosses into freely interchangeable targets. For planning, write down the branch order and the next assignment before moving; the journal's list and Raid Finder's wings serve different purposes.

Boss priorities on Normal and Heroic

Each summary below identifies the decisions that deserve an assignment before combat. Timings, tuning and Mythic additions require a separate encounter plan. When reviewing a failed attempt, check whether the assigned action happened before concluding that the group needs more damage.

Nek'zali the Soulcoiler

Use magic damage to break Restless Amani shields before they reach the well. An Essence Rend target should reach the edge before the healer dispels it. Tanks keep Possession Barrage away from the raid, and other players avoid the line between boss and tank.

Before pulling, agree on a direction for moving the boss and a dispel call. This makes the intended safe area visible to both the target and the healer.

Entombed Sentinels

Keep the two Sentinels at least 40 yards apart and balance their health. Tanks exchange bosses after intermissions. Soak Toxic Droplets before they burst and kill Venom Coagulations. Helical Toxins partners must total four stacks: pair one with three, or two with two; exceeding four is lethal on Heroic.

Assign sides and communicate stack counts. Randomly rushing toward the nearest partner is not a reliable solution.

The Lost Explorers

This is a council encounter with separate health pools. Cleaving two targets can help, but grouping all three within 30 yards triggers United Defense. Use the fish from Trader Gebbo's crates to control which ultimate occurs. Interrupt Icebound Flames and leave Blink Nova.

Give one caller responsibility for the fish decision. Multiple players making independent choices can disrupt the plan even when everyone is trying to help.

Vashnik the Malignant

Tank positioning determines which two nearby fountains are empowered by Imbibe. Swap after Dripping Fangs and kill venom adds before they reach the central pool. Infection responses differ: take Exploding Infection away, gather for Siphoning Infection and spread for Stygian Infection.

Call the infection name with the movement instruction. A generic "spread" call can be actively harmful when the current effect needs shared healing.

Sszorak

Place Venomous Surge opposite the tunnels so its Viscous Cysts can return players toward the center during Howling Maelstrom. Assign Mutilate damage-sharing groups. Raging Crosswinds partners need opposite wind directions and must face each other. Avoid the tempest hazards while preserving the planned bounce route.

Mark the intended cyst position before combat. Moving an effect to a visually empty spot is not enough if it removes the group's route back.

Three mechanics that require a specific response

The Twin Fangs

Balance Vexhul and Ithraz rather than finishing one far ahead of the other. Players with low Eternal Venom stacks handle Caustic Deluge orbs; Ravenous Feast can remove a stack. Stay below ten stacks on Heroic. Tanks handle the three Stone Breaker impacts and then swap.

Make orb eligibility part of voice calls. The player closest to an orb may be the wrong person to collect it.

The Coiled Altar

Place Coalesced Venom orbs where a tank can clear them with Sever, and swap on each Sever. Set two alternating groups for Guillotine. Keep Zul'jan accessible to the raid in the opening and balance the separate health pools when both bosses are active in the final phase.

Choose the orb area and the next Guillotine group in advance. Leaving both decisions until the cast starts creates unnecessary movement.

Ula'tek

Assign egg collectors and platform teams before the pull; touching an egg can start combat. Spectral Coils handles carried eggs, with two soak teams on Heroic. In the side corridors, return small eggs before the large Doomscale Egg. Later, finish Serpent's Bite soaks before separating for Volatile Purge.

Treat the final encounter as a sequence of assignments rather than one sustained damage phase. Confirm who collects, who carries the large egg and who calls the next shared-damage group. Unassigned jobs are more dangerous than a modestly slower opening.

Equipment: read the boss band, not one raid-wide number

Item level rises within each difficulty. The table shows direct boss drops, not an upgrade recommendation or a promise that every slot has an item at every listed level.

The final two Mythic encounters are the exception to the earlier progression: their direct drops are item level 344. Do not describe 344 as the ordinary starting level for the whole Mythic raid or as a standard upgrade destination for earlier drops.

Raid completions also unlock Great Vault choices at two, four and six bosses, excluding Story Mode. Treat this as a weekly choice system, not an extra item immediately awarded after each threshold. For an equipment decision, compare your current slot, set bonus and alternatives rather than following item level alone.

Ula'tek

Slumbering Coil Curio, exchangeable for a tier slot through Kirana

For a targeted run, start with the missing set slot and its boss. The curio provides a flexible route; it is not a reason to assume every Ula'tek kill guarantees a set piece. Consult the current loot entry and the group's distribution rules before arranging a run around a particular reward.

Collection goals and time-sensitive achievements

Different rewards call for different runs. A clean progression kill, an achievement attempt and a collection clear may need conflicting tactics, so declare the purpose before the first pull.

·        Glory of the Venomous Raider rewards Crimson Venomfang. Its encounter conditions require deliberate preparation on Normal or higher; ordinary boss kills alone do not complete the meta-achievement.

·        Mythic Ula'tek can drop Primeval Skyfriend. This is a separate reward from the Glory mount, not a substitute way to finish the achievement.

·        No Egg Scramble awards the Ula'took companion. Plan its extra condition as an achievement attempt rather than assuming it follows from any final-boss kill.

·        Ahead of the Curve and Cutting Edge require the relevant Heroic or Mythic Ula'tek kill before the next raid tier releases. Use the achievement text to check eligibility; they are not permanently available on the same terms.

·        Housing decor offers additional collection goals. Check the specific item or achievement requirement instead of assuming every decorative reward drops directly from a boss.

Three raid goals: equipment, achievements and collection

Preparing the first organized clear

Choose a difficulty that matches the group, then prepare the assignments that the encounters actually test. A practical briefing can stay short:

1. Confirm the route and the run's goal: progression, set slots or achievements.

2. Name tank swaps, dispel callers, interrupts and damage-sharing groups.

3. Identify exceptions to the usual movement habits: four-stack partners, healing stacks and cyst bounces.

4. On Ula'tek, assign eggs and corridor teams before anyone approaches an egg.

5. After a wipe, identify the first missed assignment and change one instruction before trying again.

These are organizational recommendations, not additional entry requirements. They help a group turn a long list of abilities into decisions that can be called and checked.

Questions before entering

Is Mythic released a week after Normal and Heroic?

No. All three organized difficulties opened in the same reset week. The staggered release applied to the four Raid Finder wings and Story Mode.

Can Raid Finder's item-level threshold be used for every mode?

No. The 273 requirement applies to that queue. An organized group sets its own preparation expectations according to difficulty and experience.

Should every venom effect be avoided or carried away?

No. Several mechanics require soaking, gathering or a planned bounce. Read the exact ability and the assigned response; the visual theme does not determine the correct action.

What should a returning player prioritize?

Pick a concrete goal first. For equipment, map missing set slots to bosses and track the Vault thresholds. For collections, read the reward condition and join a run built around it. Trying to satisfy every objective in one unplanned clear makes coordination harder.
