Materials Needed for Inscription 1-600 (MoP Classic)
Inscription heavily relies on inks and pigments. Pigments are obtained by Milling herbs, and inks are usually crafted using pigments for skillups.
If pigments are cheaper to buy than milling herbs yourself, it may be beneficial to purchase them.
Milling requires stacks of 5 herbs.
You can mix any herbs within the same category to reach the total amount needed.

Buying vs Milling Pigments
Buy pigments as needed rather than all at once.
Watch for rare pigments during milling—they can help with alternate crafts and better leveling.
Light Parchment should always be bought from supply vendors near your trainer, never the Auction House.

101-126 uses Lion's Ink; craft about 40 or until skill 105, then 7 Orange glyph crafts to reach 126.
Leveling Inscription 126 - 200
126-129: Craft Dawnstar Ink (requires Burnt Pigment). Don’t pass skill 129 or you miss +3 skillups.
129-147: Craft 6 glyphs, all giving +3 skillups, learning new glyphs as needed.
147-150: Strange Tarot, needing 6 Dawnstar Ink.
150-155: Make 42 Jadefire Ink.
155-197: Craft 14 glyphs with Jadefire Ink or use Royal Ink if you have Indigo Pigment.
197-200: Use Arcane Tarot with Royal Ink or craft more glyphs with Jadefire Ink.
Leveling Inscription 200 - 290
200-205: Craft 42 Celestial Ink.
205-247: Craft 14 +3 skillup glyphs.
225+: If you have Ruby Pigment, make Fiery Ink.
247-250: Use 5 Fiery Ink for Book of Stars (+5 skillup), or craft Yellow glyphs.
250-255: Make at least 20 Shimmering Ink; keep making until skillup turns grey.
255-260: Make 5 Scroll of Spirit V.
260-275: Craft 5 +3 skillup glyphs.
275-290: Use Sapphire Pigment for Ink of the Sky or craft 5 glyphs if unavailable.

290-305: Craft 45 Ethereal Ink (90 Nether Pigment).
305-350: Craft 15 +3 skillup glyphs with Ethereal Ink.
