Marksmanship Hunter DPS Guide – Patch 11.1.7 Season 2
Overview of Marksmanship Hunter

Marksmanship Hunter is a ranged, mail-armor DPS spec focusing on long-range, slower-paced gameplay interrupted by moments of rapid burst damage. If you enjoy eliminating foes from a distance with powerful, well-aimed shots while minimizing movement, this spec fits your playstyle.

Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
Excels in burst AoE damage, limited to 8 targets but capable of some of the highest peak numbers in this range.
Highly mobile compared to most ranged specs, though slightly less than Beast Mastery, able to perform much of its rotation on the move.
Weaknesses
Longer cast times outside cooldown windows reduce flexibility in quick target switching and diminish burst potential.
Changes to Marksmanship Hunter in Patch 11.1
Patch 11.1 brought significant updates to Marksmanship Hunter, some amounting to a rework. New, reworked, and removed talents have altered rotation feel, talent priorities, and playstyle, but the core spec remains familiar for returning players.
Key Hunter Class Updates
Wilderness Medicine: Now buffs Natural Mending, reducing Exhilaration’s cooldown globally.
Marksmanship-Specific Updates
No longer summons a default pet. Instead, the spec features Eyes in the Sky, a subtle avian companion introducing new mechanics like Spotter’s Mark, Harrier’s Cry (a Marksmanship-specific Bloodlust), and Intimidation.
Pet use is optional through the Unbreakable Bond talent but comes with a DPS loss.
Players can select Tenacity or Cunning pet effects via a choice node, preserving pet utility (aside from Fortitude of the Bear) when forgoing a pet.
Aspect of the Hydra introduces limited 2-target cleave, competing with Trick Shots, which grants 3-6 target AoE. The choice depends on encounter target counts.
Removal of Light/Heavy Ammo limits cleave to 3-6 targets, with no options beyond that.
Aimed Shot’s cast time increased from 2.5 to 3 seconds but is balanced by Streamline, which reduces cast time via several sources like spending Precise Shots and sometimes Explosive Shot. When timed correctly, Aimed Shot’s cast times average out shorter outside Trueshot but longer during it.
Weaving Arcane Shot or Multi-Shot between Aimed Shots is now essential for generating Streamline stacks and maintaining reasonable cast times, including during Trueshot, which no longer halves Aimed Shot’s cast time.
The Precision Detonation talent adds complexity, mainly for AoE builds. Casting Explosive Shot immediately followed by Aimed Shot maximizes the effect. The tooltip’s order is misleading; Explosive Shot then Aimed Shot generally works well but avoid overcapping Streamline stacks. Note Streamline caps at 2.
Hero Tree Changes for Marksmanship Hunter
Dark Ranger Updates
Black Arrow no longer autofires during Trueshot when you get Deathblow procs. Instead, Deathblow is always active (without the cooldown reset), allowing Black Arrow to be used on cooldown during Trueshot.
Sentinel Updates
Lunar Storm has been reworked: its radius increased, now tracks the target slowly, cooldown raised to 30 seconds, and damage adjusted. The improved size and tracking make it a strong choice since tank movement is less of a drawback.
Marksmanship Hunter Hero Talents in The War Within: Dark Ranger and Sentinel
Dark Ranger
Focused on Black Arrow, which replaces Kill Shot and is usable more often. This tree also boosts Deathblow proc frequency, enhancing burst damage.
Sentinel
Centered on passive effects like Sentinel, Symphonic Arsenal, and Lunar Storm. These improve sustained AoE but don’t drastically change gameplay.
Dark Ranger is preferred for single-target damage and raiding.
Sentinel excels in AoE, making it ideal for Mythic+. Dark Ranger’s strong single-target also remains relevant in high-end Mythic+.
Playing a Marksmanship Hunter in The War Within Season 2
Marksmanship runs on a priority list that guides ability use, with key burst sequences to maximize damage. Your main goals:
Avoid wasting Focus: Focus is the main resource for abilities. Efficient usage means casting more Arcane Shot/Multi-Shot and fewer Steady Shots.
Maintain cooldown uptime: Most damage comes from cooldown-limited abilities like Aimed Shot, Rapid Fire, and Explosive Shot. Cast these as often as possible, managing priorities when multiples are available.
React to procs: Many abilities have cooldown resets or procs. Quickly adjusting your rotation around these is crucial to maximize output.
Gearing a Marksmanship Hunter in The War Within Season 2
For stats, prioritize:
Critical Strike »»» Mastery (and Haste if using Dark Ranger) » Haste » Versatility.
Agility should not be ignored; a higher item level often outweighs perfectly optimized stats. Always use tools like Raidbots to simulate your character for the best results in your specific situation.
Best Professions for Marksmanship Hunter
Professions offer minimal direct performance boosts in The War Within. For convenience and utility:
Leatherworking helps craft your own armor, potentially close to Best in Slot.
Alchemy allows creating your own consumables.
Enchanting lets you enchant gear without depending on the Auction House.
Best Races for Marksmanship Hunter
Marksmanship Hunters can be any race from Horde or Alliance.
Races with critical hit damage bonuses, like Dwarf and Tauren, synergize well with Marksmanship’s preference for Critical Strike.
Racial bonuses differ by about 2% between the best and worst options, so choose the race you enjoy playing most or that fits your roleplay or aesthetic preference.
