How to Ascend: Ascension Trials
During the Campaign, you’ll gain access to Ascension Trials, special dungeon-like challenges that allow you to unlock your Ascendancy Class. Completing the first Trial unlocks your Ascendancy, while completing higher difficulty versions of the Trials grants additional points for your Ascendancy Class Tree.
Currently, there are two Trials available in Early Access, each with slightly different mechanics. Players can choose which Trial to complete for their Ascension. A third Trial is planned for release later.
Trial of the Sekhemas
The first Ascension Trial, the Trial of the Sekhemas, is somewhat similar to the Sanctum mechanic in Path of Exile 1. In this trial, you’ll manage a unique resource called Honour, which decreases whenever you take damage. If your Honour is fully depleted, your run will end, and you’ll need to restart the trial.
As you progress through the Trial, you’ll select new rooms to explore, fight various monsters, and face unique challenges. Along the way, you may encounter items or NPCs that provide valuable benefits to help you succeed.
How to Find the Trial of the Sekhemas (Act 2)
- Defeat Balbala, the Traitor in Traitor’s Pass.
- Balbala will drop an item that grants access to the Trial of the Sekhemas.
- After returning to town, you’ll unlock a Waypoint that takes you directly to the Trial.
Trial of Chaos
Unlike the Trial of the Sekhemas, the Trial of Chaos does not use the Honour system, making it a potentially better option for slower, tankier characters. Instead, the trial challenges you to progress through different areas while selecting detrimental effects that will persist throughout your run.
These effects include environmental hazards, curses, and buffs that empower monsters, among other challenges. You’ll need to carefully plan your path and manage these effects to succeed.
How to Find the Trial of Chaos (Act 3)
- Defeat Xyclucian, the Chimera, and pick up the Inscribed Ultimatum.
- Use the Inscribed Ultimatum to unlock and enter the Temple of Chaos, where you can begin the Trial.
