Gold is an account-bound currency in Path of Exile 2, obtained naturally as loot from defeated monsters or by selling items to Vendors. This resource plays a significant role, especially during the campaign, and has several important uses.
Purchasing Items with Gold
Items Available for Purchase
In Path of Exile 2, players can buy and sell items from specific NPCs in town known as Vendors. Each Vendor specializes in different types of items:
- Flasks, Jewelry, and Caster Items such as Sceptres and Wands.
- Armour and Weapons suitable for various builds.
Item Rarities Available
Vendors offer items of various rarities:
Normal (White):
- Serve as excellent base items for crafting upgrades using Currency Orbs.
Magic (Blue):
- Often provide significant early-game upgrades during your journey.
Rare (Yellow):
- Occasionally, you might find well-rolled Rare items that can greatly enhance your character while progressing through the six Acts of the campaign.
Dynamic Vendor Stock
The items available from Vendors evolve as your character levels up, so it’s a good idea to revisit them periodically to check for potential upgrades.
Flasks
The Importance of Flasks in PoE 2
Flasks are a critical survival tool in Path of Exile 2, deserving their own section to emphasize their significance. They offer tremendous benefits, including:
- Life Flasks: Provide Life recovery, essential for sustaining health during combat.
- Mana Flasks: Restore Mana, enabling consistent use of abilities.
- Utility Flasks: Offer defensive bonuses or resistances, helping to counter debilitating ailments like Freeze, Poison, and other deadly effects.
Upgrading Your Flasks
As you level up, you’ll discover higher-tier Flasks that restore greater amounts of Life or Mana per use. Vendors will also update their stock to include these improved Flasks, so it’s important to check back frequently for upgrades that match your current level.
Respeccing in PoE 2
Adjusting Passive Points
In Path of Exile 2, players can use Gold to remove Passive Points from their Passive Skill Tree by speaking to The Hooded One, an NPC located in towns. Once a Passive Point is unallocated, it can be reassigned elsewhere, allowing partial respecialization (respec) of your character.
Gold Costs for Respeccing
The cost of removing Passive Points depends on two factors:
- Your character level.
- The number of Passive Points being removed.
The price increases as you progress and gain more levels. While the cost isn’t exorbitant, it is designed to discourage frequent and complete respecs.
Limitations and Strategic Importance
- You can only unallocate Passive Points that are at the end of a chain, ensuring the tree’s pathing remains intact.
- This means your decisions on the Passive Tree are important and should be made with care.
Campaign and Endgame Usage
- During the campaign, respeccing is useful for fine-tuning your character rather than performing a full rebuild.
- In the endgame, you may accumulate enough Gold to completely rework your character if needed, though it will require significant farming.
Gambling in PoE 2
What is Gambling?
In Path of Exile 2, every town features a specific NPC that allows players to Gamble for new items. These Vendors offer an infinite supply of unidentified items of various types, which players can purchase using Gold. The rarity of the items obtained through Gambling is random and can include:
- Magic (Blue) items
- Rare (Yellow) items
- Unique items, if you’re lucky
Benefits of Gambling
- Campaign Upgrades: Gambling can be a reliable source of gear upgrades while progressing through the campaign.
- Endgame Rares and Uniques: It also provides a potential way to acquire very rare and valuable Unique items in the endgame.
A "Smart Loot" System
Gambling in PoE 2 serves as Grinding Gear Games’ (GGG’s) take on a smart loot system. Instead of relying on random drops tailored to your character, Gambling gives you the chance to obtain useful items by spending Gold.
- Items obtained from Gambling appear to have a higher chance of being well-rolled, making it particularly beneficial for lower-level characters seeking effective upgrades.
- Although the Gold costs can be steep, the potential payoff often justifies the investment.
Trading in PoE 2
Speculation Based on PoE 1 and the Kalguur League
In Path of Exile 1, Gold was introduced as a trade medium during the Settler’s of Kalguur League, and it’s speculated that similar mechanics may apply in Path of Exile 2.
Currency Exchange Market
The Currency Exchange Market allows players to trade specific consumable items quickly and efficiently. This includes:
- Currency Orbs
- Fragments
However, equippable items like Weapons and Armour cannot be traded through this market. The Gold cost for items varies depending on their rarity and type, making higher-tier items more expensive to obtain.
Traditional Trading System
Similar to Path of Exile 1, PoE 2 will likely include a dedicated trading platform where players can trade items directly with others. This system does not rely on Gold and allows trading of all item types, including equippable gear that cannot be traded through the Currency Exchange Market.
Acquiring Gold in PoE 2
Selling Items to Vendors
One of the primary ways to acquire Gold is by selling items to Vendors. The amount of Gold you receive depends on:
- Rarity of the item.
- Item Level.
- Modifiers on the item.
- Whether the item is identified or not.
Looting from Monsters
Gold also drops naturally from monsters as you progress through the game.
- If you’re within a specific range, Gold will be automatically collected via a "vacuum" mechanic, eliminating the need to click.
- If you’re too far away, you’ll need to move closer to manually pick it up.
Other Strategies
Currently, other methods for acquiring Gold remain unknown. However, post-launch guides will provide additional insights and strategies.
Additional Tips for Managing Gold in PoE 2
Shared Gold (Important)
Gold is shared across all characters in the same League. This means:
- If you create a new Level 1 character after playing a high-level one, the Gold accumulated by the high-level character can be used by the new one.
- This allows your new characters to buy better gear from Vendors or Gamble for upgrades, making their campaign progression much faster and smoother.
Identifying Items
Always identify items before selling them to Vendors for Gold:
- Identified items, especially Rares, yield significantly more Gold than unidentified ones.
- With the help of PoE’s new "Deckard Cain-like" NPC, The Hooded One, you can identify multiple items in bulk, saving time and effort.
Saving Currency
Avoid selling Currency Orbs to Vendors for Gold. It is generally not worth the trade-off, as Currency is much more valuable for crafting and trading.
Disenchanting for Currency Shards
If you feel you have sufficient Gold, consider Disenchanting items with certain Vendors to obtain Currency Shards instead:
- Collect a stack of 10 Currency Shards to convert them into a full Currency Orb of that type.
- Note: Some Currency types may require more Shards to form a full Orb. This guide will be updated with specifics post-launch.
